Preliminary walking and cycling plans for

1. Dedicated walking and cycling paths Today, there is already an extensive network of pedestrian footpaths throughout Ang Mo Kio. We will construct dedicated cycling paths alongside most footpaths, making it safer and more convenient to walk and cycle to key transport nodes, schools, markets and other amenities.

To further reduce the likelihood of conflict between pedestrians and cyclists, cycling paths will be located between pedestrian footpaths and roads where possible. If there are space constraints, a shared path will be implemented instead.

2. Safer bus stops We will also designate the area around bus stops as Pedestrian Priority Zones, where pedestrians have the right of way, and cyclists will have to slow down for pedestrians.

Before After

3. Safer road crossings We will make traffic intersections and road crossings safer and more comfortable for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists through better design.

Dedicated bicycle crossings will be built alongside pedestrian crossing lanes to give cyclists their own space to cross the road, while minimising conflict with pedestrians.

Before After

We are also studying ideas to improve major junctions and T-junctions. Where possible, slip roads may be removed or narrowed, so that these spaces can be converted into more kerb space for pedestrians and cyclists to wait at safely.

This will also naturally help to reduce turning speeds for vehicles, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. As this may impact traffic, we will conduct more feasibility studies.

Before After

4. Traffic calming by narrowing roads Where possible, we will implement traffic calming measures through road- narrowing along suitable roads to encourage motorists to drive at lower speeds and enhance road safety for all road users. The reclaimed space could be used to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

5. Code of conduct In land-scarce , it is important that we share public spaces graciously and always look out for one another’s safety.

We will introduce a code of conduct on a set of principles and rules to guide the behaviour of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. This is to ensure a safe and enjoyable walking and cycling experience for everyone, especially for more vulnerable users such as seniors and young children.

We will develop this code of conduct together with the local community, and it will be supported by educational programmes to help shape the culture and ethos for safe walking and cycling in Ang Mo Kio.

6. Bicycle parking We will also provide adequate bicycle parking at major commuter destinations, such as MRT stations, commercial centres, neighbourhood centres, community clubs and schools, to encourage more people to cycle.

7. Proposed plans for a seamless corridor for walking and cycling along the MRT viaduct We will build a 2.6km walking and cycling corridor along the MRT viaduct, from MRT station, past Ang Mo Kio MRT station, to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, to provide a seamless path for pedestrians and cyclists.

This corridor will provide a north-south spine for pedestrians and cyclists alike, and will be part of the larger walking and cycling network in Ang Mo Kio targeted to be implemented by 2018.

Walking and cycling corridor along the MRT viaduct o Improve the use of land under the MRT viaduct Currently, the stretch of sidewalk under the MRT viaduct between Yio Chu Kang MRT station and Nanyang Polytechnic is crowded, and there is insufficient space for pedestrians to walk comfortably. We are studying if we can convert parts of the land under the viaduct into walking and cycling paths so that there is more space for walking and cycling.

Before After

o Provide better access to Ang Mo Kio MRT station Pedestrians are using the existing sheltered walkways to get to Ang Mo Kio MRT station. With the improvement works, pedestrians and cyclists will each have their own paths with a more gentle gradient, and ramps instead of stairs at certain locations, to make the trips safer and more comfortable.

Before After

o Elevated path at Ang Mo Kio MRT station Currently, the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and 8 is a very busy intersection, with high pedestrian, cyclist and vehicular traffic. Some pedestrians and cyclists may want to bypass the MRT station and avoid this street-level crossing for a faster and safer journey.

Before After

An elevated walking and cycling path, alongside the MRT viaduct, will allow residents to walk and cycle more seamlessly and safely to (or past) Ang Mo Kio MRT station. The already hilly terrain leading to and behind the MRT station means minimal climbing effort will be required.

o Weather-protected walking and cycling track underneath the MRT viaduct The shaded, concrete linear park under the MRT viaduct south of Ang Mo Kio MRT station is used by walkers and joggers today. However, there are steps along the way that make it a less than ideal experience for walking and cycling. We will improve the entire shaded area under the MRT viaduct to make it easier and more comfortable for residents to walk and cycle.

We will also add new activity nodes below the viaduct, such as a fitness corner and play mounds.

Before After

o Possible elevated flyover across minor road We are studying the feasibility of building an elevated walking and cycling path at Ang Mo Kio Street 41 and Avenue 1. This will provide a seamless route, allowing residents to walk or cycle in comfort, from Ang Mo Kio to Bishan.
