Introduction

This booklet is the result of a two year cooperation in our project: “The Melting Pot Of Diversities.” It started in September 2013 and ended in July 2015. The English explanations and stories written down in this booklet, isn’t always without any mistake. Our schools are lower vocational schools and therefore some mistakes will be there. We didn’t want to correct the stories our students wrote, only there where it would be impossible to understand the stories.

This booklet also contains DVD and CD parts which you can open on a DVD player to look at images and film parts and the CD in meant for the PC to have a look at the presentations and the dictionary we created.

During the 2 years we had our project, all the partner schools and their students and teachers did their utmost to achieve the goals mentioned in the application form.

One of the most important one is to get a wider perspective in differences in culture, history, way of living and acceptance and respect those differences throughout Europe and especially between the participating countries. We do believe we did achieve these goals, because we experienced friendships between pupils and teachers, lasting a lot longer that only in the two years we worked together. Differences disappeared in the two years we worked together and an attitude of acceptance was growing in a mutual friendship between students and colleagues from all the participating schools.

We are lucky we were a part of this beautiful story and proud we could add all that we felt was necessary to achieve our goals.

In the XVth century the Spanish soldiers arrived in Tenerife. They wanted to conquer the island. They fought against the aboriginal inhabitants, called Guanches. One of their Mencey or leader-kings, was Beneharo.

The Spaniards promised that they only wanted to build a castle to provide water and food for the Spanish ships. They wanted peace. Beneharo accepted this agreement. The conquerors broke this agreement because many Guanches were made slaves. Beneharo, Mencey of Anaga –one of the kingdoms of the island- fought against the invaders, and they had to run away.

They defeated the Spanish Army using javelins, called Banots, round, polished stones, spears and maces.

Beneharo was sent to the mainland to meet the King and Queen of Spain. He went back to the island years later.

According to a legend, the Spanish soldiers sacked Taganana, a peasants village in Anaga. When they came back they had to fight against Beneharo. The Guanches were defeated. When he saw that he was alone, he threw himself into the void from a hill so the soldiers didn’t catch him alive. Although he didn’t die, he went mad when he saw how his people were made slaves

LA CANTATA DEL MENCEY LOCO

The following lines are part of the song which tells how Beneharo tried to kill himself when he understands that his future is slavery.

¡Achamaaaaaannnn!

12 Sven’s worst moment!

In the long distances skaters have to change track once per round. Then you switch from the inside track to the outside track or the other way around. There are also rules concerning this switch, especially when the two skater arrive at the same time on the spot to change track. On 23-02-2010 Sven Kramer switched to the wrong track at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver . He was a little too late making the change and his coach shouted at him to go to the inside track, but that was the track he came from! He had to go to the outside track! Because of this he was disqualified and he missed the gold medal . He was already the fastest, but by making the mistake Lee Shueng - Hoon became 1st . Sven was mad at his coach and he blamed him for the mistake, but himself as well because as he said: “I am responsible to make my choice! My coach shouted me his advice and I followed his advice and that is my responsibility!

Sven’s injuries!

Kramer would make his debut in the season 2003/2004 on the NK (National Championship) distances in Heerenveen where he would compete in the 5000 meters. Just two days before the competition he broke his ankle after falling down the stairs. Therefor the first months of the season he couldn’t skate in competitions anymore. He had, partly because of the leg injury, a training arrears of three to four months and did not want force anything. The objective of the 24-year-old Friesian was to make his comeback late December st the Dutch Allround Championships.

Back injury Kramer told the NOS that he had suffered an Injury in a fall in the garden " Very silly ," he called it. "A little bit stupid too . It is not fun in any case. And it has more impact than I thought.

17 BENHARO: HERO IN GALLIPOLI

During last year Summer, a group of tourists arrived at Gallipoli to spend their holidays. They came from different parts of the world and they were really rude.

Everywhere they went, they were fighting, screaming and insulting everyone:

both citizens of Gallipoli and other tourists.

They were overbearing and arrogant, so arrogant that everyone was afraid to leave the house.

18 Benharo, a wise man, went around the town to look for them. When he met them he invite them to go away

from Gallipoli. They, as usual, began to

insult him and to hurt him but Benharo

was far stronger than all of them, not

only defended himself very well but he

forced the bad tourists to surrender.

Having found a man stronger than them

and realizing they could no longer

impose their will, they decided to leave

from Gallipoli.

From that day, during Summer, the town of Gallipoli organizes the Benharo's party where citizens and tourists celebrate together the newfound peace.

20 SVEN KRAMER SKATING IN GALLIPOLI

One day Sven Kramer, the Dutch great skater, arrived at Gallipoli, with his girlfriend, Naomi Van AS. The two liked so much the town of Gallipoli that they did not want to leave from Gallipoli.

Gallipoli was by the sea and the two lovers enjoyed the sea.

21

Some years later, however, Sven was missing his favorite sport. In Gallipoli, in fact, was never snowing and, therefore, there was no ice ring where to skate. His girlfriend noticed it and she decided to do something.

She went to the Town Hall to talk with the Mayor of Gallipoli.

She asked him to use a channel of water that flowed into the sea, for sporting purposes. The mayor granted the use of the channel.

22 Naomi made the channel iced and in this way Sven was able to practice his favorite sport.

The Gallipoli’s guys, intrigued, went every day to attend his workouts. They liked so much that kind of sport that they asked the athlete if he could teach them to skate.

After a few years, the boys became very good skaters and participated in national and international competitions, winning many gold medals. The town of Gallipoli is now really grateful to Sven because a lot of young people is famous thanks him.

31 Antonietta de Pace to Hederland.

Day one

Antonietta de Pace goes to Holland. She is going to Amsterdam with the airplane. First she’s going to visit Amsterdam. Antonietta is going into a canal tour to visit the Amsterdam canals. She thinks it’s very beautiful. She is also going to visit a coffeeshop. In Italy, Amsterdam is very famous because weed is legal in holland. When she is walking to Amsterdam Central Station where she is going to drink some Starbucks Coffee. She drinks her Coffee in the train to Leeuwarden. When she arrives in Leeuwarden she takes the bus to the Bastion Hotel. she is very exited for tomorrow because she is going to visit the centre of Leeuwarden.

Day two

Antonietta is going to visit the Achmea. She is going to buy souvenirs for her family at home. The sale assistant sayd to her she should visit the Oldehove, because it’s very famous in Leeuwarden. First she is going to rent a OV bicycle at Leeuwarden central station. She is going to learn how to cycle. When she knows how to cycle, it’s time to visit the Oldehove. She asks a man to take a picture of her and the Oldehove so she can show the picture to her friends at home. Near by the Oldehove is a map. On the map there is also an soccer stadium of the proffesional soccerteam Cambuur Leeuwarden, so she decide to visit a match. When she arrives she thinks it’s a bad soccerclub. And indeed Cambuur is a bad soccerclub. The day is almost over so she is going to eat typical dutch food. She finds a restaurant. She is going to eat boerenkool with a sausage. Her opinion is that it tasted very diffrent than what she is used to eat in Italy. After the supper she is very tired so she decided to go to sleep.

32 Day three

This is the last day for Antonietta in Holland. When she wakes up she is going to eat an typical breakfast at the bastion hotel. a cup of milk. Bread with cheese, hagelslag and vlokken. When she finished her breakfast she is going to bring her bike back to Leeuwarden central station. But first she is going to buy some typical food. She is going to buy hagelslag, and some cheese. And a lot of heineken beer at the Albert Heijn. Then she is going to buy some clothes in the H&M because there are no H&M’s in Gallipoli, only in Lecce. She thinks H&M is better than Terranova. When she is done with shopping she is going to the railway station and takes the train back to Schiphol. When she arrives at Schiphol she is going to buy some thing in the tax-free shops at Schiphol. Then she is going to board. She is going to fly back to Brindisi. She really enjoyed her stay here in Holland.

33 Breakfast Breakfast in Holland tends to be a simple and is normally eaten at home. Standard Dutch breakfast is with bread and butter, jam and of course, the chocolate sprinkles known as ‘hagelslag’. Sometimes you can eat a boiled egg or perhaps a few slices of Dutch cheese. It is a normal start of the day, which might not seem enough, but don’t forget that the Dutch will often enjoy a slice of fresh ‘appeltaart’ (apple pie) around 11.00 am, to see them through to lunch!

Lunch At 12.00 noon the Dutch open their packed lunch. Like breakfast, a Dutch lunch is never a great meal at a nice table with food on it but mostly a ‘boterham met kaas’ (a sandwich with Dutch cheese), with a glass of Chocomel or ‘karnemelk’ which although translates as ‘butter milk’ but actually it has no butter! Milk products are a lot on the Dutch lunch menu, that explains why there are so many cows in the country. In fact, it is said that there are as many cows as people in Friesland! On special occasions the Dutch may pay a visit to a local café for lunch, where traditional Dutch favourites such as ‘uitsmijters’ (toast with ham, eggs and melted Dutch cheese) are regularly served. The Dutch are healthy conscious people and may round off their midday meal with a solitary apple or orange.

Dinner The Dutch evening meal is eaten early and it is not unusual to finish dinner at 6.00 pm. Holland has an extensive colonial past and has a lot of immigrants, who have influenced dinner perhaps more than any other meal. These days a Dutch family can easily sit down at an Indonesian ‘Rijsttafel’ (a selection of fragrant Indonesian dishes), as at a typical Dutch meal. This meal always has meat and potatoes. Stews are eaten as well, such as ‘Boerenkoolstampot’ which is an intensely satisfying combination of mashed potatoes, cabbage and smoked sausage or ‘rookworst’. Dinner tends to be followed by a preferred Dutch pudding such as ‘vla’. This rich and creamy, cold dessert, which comes in a variety of flavours. It is available in most Dutch supermarkets. Unlike breakfast and lunch, dinner is frequently eaten at a restaurant with friends or family and in most large Dutch towns and cities there are eateries specialising in every cuisine imaginable, from Argentinean steakhouses to Japanese sushi bars.

Only at dinner time people have talks, but is also could be that family memeners are in a hurry to go to football training or doing other free- time activities. The social part isn’t there at all. In special occasions, like birthdays, Christmas etc, they are sitting at the table for a long time and talk about a lot of issues.

37 Breakfast (7.00 – 11.00) In Italy, breakfast is always a light meal. It may consist of a cappuccino or coffee & brioche (type of croissant) at a bar (often standing up) or coffee and biscuits and possibly a piece of fruit at home. The brioche can be plain ( liscia), filled with jam ( con marmellata) or confectioners custard ( con crema), even occasionally with chocolate ( con cioccolata). Note: For Italians cappuccino is a breakfast drink and most do not drink it after 11 am. As a foreigner though you can do what you like!

45 Polish Eating Habits

Breakfast - usually a big one is eaten early in the morning. Scrambled Eggs are very popular in Poland. We also love cooked sausages. We Poles drink tea all day long and together with our meals.

The second breakfast - yes we have 2 breakfasts. Actually it is a sort of lunch. It is to be served about 11 a.m. We have some toasty’s, sandwiches or anything light then.

Dinner is served between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Polish dinner consists usually of 2 meals. 1 is soup. Tomato soup and bullion are the most popular. The 2nd meal is quite normal: meat, potatoes, vegies. Sometimes we have some dessert afterwards, providing we have some room for it.

I hope you noticed we do not have any starters.

Supper is to be served between 7 and 9 p.m. Usually we have some sandwiches and tea. However we are Poles and we invented the sausages, at least we claim we did, we have baked or grilled ones for our supper.

Many companies introduced lunch break, so many Poles have lunch instead of our second breakfast.

Polish people love to show their hospitality by presenting a table covered with food and dishes. Not a spot of the table is to be seen. It doesn’t have the intention that all the food should be eaten, but that guests feel welcome. During the meals we talk about a large variety of subjects.

51 Canarian Eating Habits: Meals

A normal day's breakfast- or desayuno- typically consists merely of a cup of coffee, although it's also quite normal to have a croissant or other pastry with your steaming café con leche. The Spanish "traditional" breakfast consists of the vastly popular churros, served sprinkled with sugar or dunked in hot chocolate. On the Canary Islands people have their breakfast often with gofio, a mix of 4 flours traditionally used by the Guanches. In those days they bakes flat cookies or so-called gofio bread to have it as the main ingredient for a lot of dishes, also at breakfast.

Canarian people eat their lunch, or comida, between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. Serving as the day's main meal, it is traditionally quite a bit larger than the dinner meal, or cena. A typical lunch will have several courses. The first course is the lighter part of the meal, usually consisting of a salad or soup, while the second course is normally your typical fish or meat dish. A dessert can be a simple piece of fruit, a typical Spanish flan, or a sweet pastry or cake.

While there are of course many people who eat full meals, the Spanish dinner (cena) is traditionally much smaller than the midday comida. It often consisting of something lighter like a salad, a sandwich, or a selection of tapas. Spaniards eat late for this final meal of the day- even more so on weekends and during the summer- sitting down to eat anytime from 9:00 until 11:00 in the evening.

The name says it all. The word sobremesa literally means "over the table" and refers to the art of conversation after a meal. Instead of taking the last bite and leaving, Canary people often stay at the table talking about what happened that day or about daily things together with their family. If the conversations are great, be prepared to stay at the table for hours!
