COM.6 (12-78) UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIES

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

MESSAGE TO THE GREAT NORTH RUN Newcastle, 11 September 2016

It is a great pleasure to send my best wishes to all the participants in the Great North Run, which epitomizes the power of sport to bring people together.

This year, runners from every one of the 193 Member States of the United Nations are expected to participate in the Great North Run, making it a truly global celebration.

Every runner's experience is unique, but the finishing line symbolizes for all the culmination of hard work and determination.

Communal activities and sports are good for people, communities and society as a whole. They can make an important contribution to development and peace.

The Great North Run is an example of how sport empowers, motivates and inspires. It does all this while raising money for many worthwhile causes.

The Great North Run is a true celebration of humanity, commitment and personal achievement.

In a culture that loves to celebrate winners, this event makes winners of all its participants.

I celebrate you all, and wish you the best of luck.

To the office of the Secretary-General,

I do hope you are well today?

I received an e-mail this week from UN Special Adviser Lemke's office asking that I contact you directly regarding this request

? Mr Lemke had received an introduction regarding our event from Bill Morris, the former Director of Ceremonies at the Olympics 2012 and who still works closely with Mr Lemke on other projects including the Olympic Museum in Luasanne.

We are contacting you regarding our initiative at this year' Great North Run which is being held on th Sunday 11 September. For 2016 we are inviting the world to the North East of for a unique and special gathering.

The Great North Run will truly become the world's favourite run as we plan for every nation in the world to be represented at the event. 193 people from each of the United Nations recognised nations will gather in Newcastle in September in a universal demonstration of exercise and togetherness.

With representatives from Albania to the Democratic Republic of Congo, runners will join the 57,000 other competitors in the world's biggest half in a spectacular celebration of the power of running. The campaign will be broadcast live on BBC national television for four hours with a one hour highlight programme later in the day. The coverage of the event goes to over 100 countries.

We'll tell the stories behind the runners on the day, a number of which will capture the hearts and minds of the nation as they prepare for the world's favourite run.

We would be honoured if the United Nations could acknowledge this event in some way. Ideally we would ask if the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, could attend the event and be the official starter for the run. If this is something of interest then I would be more than happy to discuss/provide further information.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. " ,. . . • I
