  • Theo Fleury Sees New Book As Chance to Start Conversations
31 janvier 2015 – Times & Transcript Theo Fleury sees new book as chance to start conversations Ex-NHLer speaks at UdeM with therapist friend about overcoming trauma Brent mazerolle Times & TranscripT Theoren Fleury says when he retired from hockey in 2003,“I had absolutely no clue what the rest of my life was going to look like.” Today, the former NHLer with the Stanley Cup ring, Olympic gold medal and world junior championship on his stat sheet, has found a whole new purpose to his life – helping others come to terms with the traumas they have faced in their lives. That’s why he and his friend and therapist Kim Barthel have written a book together called Conversations with a Rattlesnake. Compiled from 2 1/2 years of their conversations, the book is something the authors hope will inspire thousands of other conversations about trauma and abuse. He and Barthel, who Fleury calls “the Wayne Gretzky of therapy,” took their message to a Moncton audience yesterday at the Université de Moncton. Hundreds came out to hear the two speak, and have the two listen to them as part of what’s a nationwide speaking tour. Fleury and Barthel became friends – and both agree they are friends first and therapist and client second – when the two were fellow keynote speakers at a conference in Winnipeg. Fleury was there to tell the story he detailed in his first book with co-author Kirstie McLellan Day, called Playing With Fire. Barthel was there as an expert in childhood trauma who has worked with first nations in Canada, with child soldiers in Africa and child prostitutes in southeast Asia.

  • Press Release Theo Fleury Overdue for Hall of Fame
Press Release Theo Fleury Overdue for Hall of Fame June 30, 2020 (Ottawa, ON) – The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) calls on the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 18 person nominating committee to put Theoren Fleury on the ballot for 2021. “With Indigenous History Month coming to a close, it's time to recognize the accomplishments of Theroen Fleury for his contributions to hockey and place him in the Hockey Hall of Fame” states Kim Beaudin, CAP National Vice Chief. “This is a long overdue acknowledgement. He was eligible in 2009, picked in the 8th round and 166th overall. Due to his small stature, hockey pundits did not expect much from him". A news article in 2018 from the New York Times highlighted the number of Indigenous players who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). Of the 80 indigenous players, this would include Theroen “Theo” Fleury, from Oxbow, Saskatchewan. Taking a que from his father at the age of five, Theo borrowed a pair of skates because his family didn’t have the money to buy skates or equipment and he began his journey of love for hockey. Since his retirement from the Calgary Flames in 2006, over 13 years ago, it is time that Theo take his rightful place at the panica of hockey and be recognized by all Canadians for his contributions to Canada’s obsession of Hockey. There are few players in history who can match Theo Fleury’s record. The numbers speak for themselves. He finished his NHL career with 1088 points, a Stanley Cup champion in 1989 with the Calgary Flames, and seven appearances in NHL’s All-Star Games.

  • Social Problems in Canadian Ice Hockey: an Exploration Through Film
PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT. STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.2478/pcssr-2014-0024 Social Problems in Canadian Ice Hockey: An Exploration Through Film Authors’ contribution: Curtis A. Fogel A) conception and design of the study B) acquisition of data Lakehead University Orillia, Canada C) analysis and interpretation of data D) manuscript preparation E) obtaining funding ABSTRACT While celebrated as a highly popular sport in Canada, there are many social problems existing within and around Canadian ice hockey. These problems are often overlooked and rarely depicted in academic and journalistic research on sport. These social problems include, but are not limited to: extreme violence resulting in injuries and death, hazing rituals, multiple types of sexual violence, drug abuse, financial corruption, as well as various forms of prejudice and discrimination. Prompted by pop-cultural depictions in films, this paper further identifies and explores social problems in Canadian ice hockey revealing the realism embedded within various seemingly fictional films. KEYWORDS social problem, violence, sexual violence, drug abuse, injury, death, hazing, exploration through film Introduction Despite not being Canada's most popular sport in terms of spectatorship and participation statistics, ice hockey is Canada's national winter sport and is widely considered to be part of its national identity and character. Internationally, it is the sport that Canada is known for due to its cold winters and international success in events such as the World Junior Hockey Championships and the Olympics. While much is celebrated about hockey in Canada, the sport has many dark sides that are often overlooked, ignored, and forgotten. Journalist Laura Robinson characterizes this with her call to Canadian parents: "if you cherish the young boys in your life, you should keep them away from the game of hockey" (Elien 2010, 1).
