Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 527 games played. Entering the 2002-03 season, UNLV had made at least one 3-pointer in each of its last 507 games. Entering the season, Vanderbilt was only three games shy of UNLV’s mark with 504, while Kentucky was third with 473. In the 527 games, the Runnin’ Rebels have made 3,434-of-9,524 (.361) shots from behind the arc. The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982- 83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of the 64 games (the 3-pointer was used in some non- conference games). The Runnin’ Rebels sank 194-of-505 (.384) 3-point attempts during that time. The UNLV streak for games in which it sank at least one 3-point shot stands at 544. The last time the Runnin’ Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan. 25, 1986. So, UNLV has sunk at least one shot from behind the arc in 580 of the 591 games in which the rule was used. In the 591 total games, the Runnin’ Rebels have shot .362 from this distance while sinking 3,629-of-10,029. UNLV WINS VS. MOUNTAIN WEST The Runnin’ Rebels have a .500 record or better all-time against the other seven members of the Mountain West Conference: Air Force (14-2), BYU (7- 7), Colorado State (16-5), New Mexico (14-9), San Diego State (23-6), Utah (12-11), Wyoming (13-11). UNLV BOASTS BEST HOME MARK IN MWC Out of the eight Mountain West schools, UNLV has the best all-time winning percentage on its home court. UNLV is 268-49 (.845) at the Thomas & Mack Center, while Utah is second at .828 (423-88). IN OVERTIME UNLV is 40-18 (.690) all-time in overtime games and is 1-0 in overtime this season. Last year, UNLV was 4-1 in overtime. UNLV’s five overtime games during 2001-02 marked the first time it had ever played in more than four overtime games in one season. The only time UNLV played in four overtimes was during the 1994-95 season. UNLV is 32-15 (.681) in single overtime games, 6-3 (.667) in double overtime and 2-0 (1.000) in triple overtime. The Runnin’ Rebels have a record of 8-3 in overtime games at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV has won its last four overtime games. 45 YEARS OF BASKETBALL This season marks the 45th season of Runnin’ Rebel basketball at UNLV. Since the program’s inception in 1958-59, the Runnin’ Rebels have posted an all- time record of 946-369 (.719). In 1969-70, UNLV made the move to Division I and has since posted a record of 758-265 (.741) while competing at that level. In addition, UNLV has an all-time mark of 910-346 (.725) against Division I competition. EARLY SIGNINGS UNLV signed three student-athletes to national letters of intent during the early signing period. They are Chris Adams, Michael Umeh and John Winston. Adams, a 6-10 sophomore center from City College of San Francisco, was listed by Sporting News as the No. 1 JC center in the country and Street & Smith’s College Basketball magazine picked him to its second-team all-JC squad. Umeh is a 6-2 senior point guard at Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas, and Winston is a 6-3 senior guard from Hercules (Calif.) High School. LAST YEAR UNLV (21-11, 9-5 Mountain West Conference) lost at South Carolina, 75-65, in the second round of the NIT to conclude the 2001-02 season and its first under head coach Charlie Spoonhour. The NIT appearance was UNLV’s sixth in school history and it marked the fourth time that it has advanced to the second round of the NIT. The Runnin’ Rebels defeated Arizona State 96-91 in the first round. UNLV, which was the No. 3 seed in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, advanced to the title game but lost to San Diego State 78-75. UNLV, which finished third in the MWC, was 13-4 in its last 17 games and won seven of its last nine. UNLV was 17-3 at the Thomas & Mack Center during the year and had a 10-game home win streak snapped in the MWC Tournament championship game. Dalron Johnson, then a junior, led the team in scoring (17.4) and rebounding (7.0). Marcus Banks, also a junior, was second in scoring (15.8) and led the team in assists (3.0). Senior Lou Kelly also averaged double figures in scoring (15.6). Along with Kelly, the departing seniors were Jevon Banks, Noel Bloom, Vince Booker, and Chris Richardson.
