  • Worried Man Blues (A.K.A
Worried Man Blues (a.k.a. "Wearied Man Blues", "Worried Man Song", "It Takes A Worried Man") Words & Music: Traditional American Everyone knows who has recorded this song -- The Carter Family, Blind Boy Fuller, Woody Guthrie & Cisco Houston, Lonnie Donegan, The Kingston Trio, etc. -- but its writer is a murkier discussion (and makes the last line rather ironic). The earliest reference I've heard is it as a worksong, and sung much slower, in the Oklahoma oil fields in the 1920s (see the discussions on Mudcat Café). I'm inclined to agree. Sounghound Stephen Kermode sent along the song. I've included his version and the one used by The Carter Family and Woody Guthrie & Cisco Houston. 1. Stephen Kermode's version CHORUS: G It takes a worried man to sing a worried song, C G It takes a worried man to sing a worried song, G It takes a worried man to sing a worried song, D G I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long. CHORUS: I went across the river, I laid down to sleep. [3x] When I woke up, there were shackles on my feet. Twenty-nine links of chain around my leg. [3x] And on each link, the initial of my name. CHORUS: I asked the judge what might be my fine. [3x] Twenty-one years on the Rocky Mountain Line. The train that I ride, sixteen coaches long. [3x] The girl I love is on that train and gone. CHORUS: If anyone asks you who composed this song, [3x] Tell him it was I and I sing it all day long.

American Folk Music:The Golden Age, 1950–75 Thursdays, August 6 – September 24, 2020 On Zoom with Rhythmix Cultural Works Instructor: Peter Elman "Folk music--a bellwether for us in these days of reckoning." The folk music that emerged in the 1950's has lasted 70 years and will last a lot longer. Why? Because of the confluence of people, politics, philosophy and social awareness that came out of the post-war era which ushered in a new age of enlightenment. This course will examine the soundtrack of that period and how folk music became associated with, aligned with and drove social protest movements while being integrated into the larger world of popular music. Starring: Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Harry Belafonte, Kingston Trio, Barbara Dane, Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Tom Rush, Phil Ochs, Dave Van Ronk, Ian and Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, John Stewart and others. * * * * This course could not be more relevant or timely. Our country is at a crossroads. The devastation of the pandemic and the accompanying economic meltdown have only served to highlight a much deeper problem; namely, the issue of race and inequality in our society. Somehow we have yet to come to terms with our 400-year-old twin original sins: the displacement of native peoples and the enslavement and disenfranchisement of African-Americans. Folk music has been there all along to play a role in the consciousness of Americans. As great as it is to be entertained and enriched by music, sometimes it must serve as more.

I have to start off by tipping my hat to certain of my friends, people who first asked me interesting questions or spared with me in argument about music. So I salute Casey Whitt, John Snyder, Cody Walker, Derek Van Lynn, Maxine Beach, and Robin Becker. They helped me see the deep places in America’s music, made me think about its beauty and meaning.

American Music Review The H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 1 Fall 2012 Guthrie Centennial Scholarship: Ruminating on Woody at 100 By Ray Allen There is certainly no dearth of information on America’s most heralded folk singer, Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. Serious students of folk music are familiar with the wealth of published materials devoted to his life and music that have ap- peared over the past two decades. Ed Cray’s superb biography, Ramblin’s Man: The Life and Times of Woody Guthrie (W.W. Norton, 2004) provides an essential road map. Mark Allan Jackson’s Prophet Singer; The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie (University of Mississippi Press, 2007) moves deeper into the songs, while Robert Santelli and Em- ily Davidson’s edited volume, Hard Travelin’: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie (Wesleyan University Press, 1999), explores his myriad contributions as a song writer, journalist, and political activist. Guthrie’s recordings abound. His seminal Dust Bowl Ballads collection, originally recorded in April of 1940 for RCA Victor, has been reissued nu- merous times, most recently in 2000 by Buddha Records. Rounder Records’ Woody Guthrie: Library of Congress Recordings, featuring highlights from the hours of singing and storytelling Guthrie recorded for Alan Lomax in March of 1940, was released in 1992. Smithsonian Folkways has produced over a dozen Guthrie compilations, most notably Woody Guthrie: The Asch Recordings, Volumes 1-4, a four CD set which brings together the best of his mid-1940s work with Moe Asch.

Fifty Year Time Capsule: Albuquerque Folk Festival Salutes Newport Folk Festival & 1963 Why 1963? It was Tom Paxton's idea (sort of). We recently saw Tom Paxton at the South Broadway Cultural Center and the year 1963 kept coming up. When you look into it a little, you can see why. The biggest event in folk music that year was the Newport Folk Festival in which Joan Baez (who was Bob Gibson’s guest at the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959) introduced Bob Dylan. Dylan’s first album had been released the previous year. Established artists performing at Newport that year were Pete Seeger and 50's contributors to the folk scene, Theodor Bikel, Sam Hinton, Dave Van Ronk and Rambling Jack Elliot. Doc Watson, Mother Maybelle Carter, Jean Ritchie and Mike Seeger and the New Lost City Ramblers sang; their music was released as Old Time Music at Newport: 1963 or Country Music and Bluegrass at Newport: 1963. Recently rediscovered http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Joan_Baez_Bob_Dylan.jpg Mississippi John Hurt was there, 70 years old and having just released his first recording in 35 years. So was Sonny Terry. Newcomers (year of debut album in parentheses) were Judy Collins (1961), Peter, Paul & Mary (1962), Phil Ochs (1962), Tom Paxton (1962), Ian and Sylvia (1962), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Freedom Singers (1963). Dylan, Baez, the Freedom Singers, Seeger and P, P & M closed one night with "Blowing In the Wind" blending into “We shall overcome”. Brings tears to your eyes just thinking about it (or watching it on the documentary, The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival showing Dylan with Baez in 1963 up to his going electric in 1965).
