Students highlight seatbelt message 26th June 2009

MEDIA students at Epping Forest College felt so strongly about the fatalities along Epping New Road that they decided to make a film to raise awareness of the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt. The film has been deemed such a success that it will now be used by Essex Fire and Rescue Service to promote road safety.

‘Pull It, Click It, Live It!’ was produced by Kerry Hollingsworth, Amy Datadeen, Chloe Heath, Jaymie Barry and Robert Westmaas, who have just completed the BTEC National Diploma in Media at the college before embarking on their studies at UK universities. Since 2007, there have been at least 19 reported collisions and 32 casualties along Epping New Road. The students launched their campaign with their film which tells the story of Lee Potter, 18, whose Renault Clio span out of control in wet conditions and landed upside down in a tree in October 2008. Lee had been returning home working at a local golf course. His mother, Lorraine - who works as an administrator at the college - had been concerned that she had not heard from him and could not contact him. “When the police knocked on the door I thought he was dead. It was the longest five minutes of my life,” she said. Rescue officer Nick Taylor said: “We could not see how to cut him out. In 22 years we’ve never seen such a difficult road traffic accident. If Lee hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt then the consequences don’t bear thinking about. It was a miraculous escape." Lecturer Delta Muntean said: "The students have made this film aimed at young drivers to get across the message to always wear a seatbelt. The film has been such a success Essex Fire Brigade are taking it to schools and colleges to promote the message. I’m extremely proud of the students’ commitment to this project, and the excellent film they have produced as a result of their hard work” To obtain a copy of the film and for more information on media courses at Epping Forest College, contact Delta Muntean at [email protected]

Council opposes advertising boards 23rd June 2009

PLANS for advertising boards at the McCarthy and Stone retirement scheme development site in Epping High Street are being opposed by the town council. Councillors say the proposed boards and hoarding are too large and too close to the two conservation areas. They add they could attract graffiti and would be an eyesore. A council spokesman said: "It is not acceptable for advertising on anywhere near this scale to be allowed for a very extensive period in this location." Concern has been voiced at the effect the signage will have passing motorists and traffic flow as there is no on-site parking for anyone wanting to view the location more closely. The council adds: "Flags placed anywhere close to residential properties create a considerable noise nuisance and are therefore inappropriate. If any advertising is allowed it should also carry a condition relating to the clearing away of graffiti, since a similar site in Cheshunt appears to have become a major graffiti target with little attempt to remove by the developer." Overall councillors felt advertising on this scale within the High Street, in a residential location, is detrimental to the immediate street scene and this gateway area of Epping, and

31/07/2009 Everything Epping Forest Page 3 of 14

will create a considerable eyesore over a long period of time. Planning permission was granted for the development, previously occupied by three properties - 19-23 High Street, on appeal following various applications, much to the anger of local residents. The site has been cleared but building work is yet to start.

Tributes paid to road crash victim 23rd June 2009

THE family of a man who died after he was in collision with a van in Epping High Street have paid tribute to his "good, kind and generous" nature. Jim Pritchard, 71, of Mott Street, Waltham Abbey, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, following the collision with a white Mercedes Sprinter van outside the Tesco supermarket shortly after 11am on Monday (June 22). In a statement, Mr Pritchard's family said: "Jim Pritchard was born at his grandmother’s address in Ponders End but lived all his life in Sewardstone. He attended Wellington Avenue School in Chingford, and after that he completed his National Service being stationed out in Germany." When he came home he started to work at the family business which had been in the family for over 100 years - a garden nursery in Mott Street, Sewardstone, where he built his own house. He was happily married for 48 years. He leaves his wife, son, two daughters and two grandchildren. His family added: "His whole life was the nursery and his family. He was working at the nursery up until his death; it was also his hobby. He was a good, kind, generous person but most of all he was kind. He will be missed so much by all his family and friends.” The van driver involved in the collision was uninjured. A 70-year-old man, from Sawbridgeworth, arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, has been released on police bail until Monday, September 21, pending further enquiries. A section of the road was closed for three hours while forensic collision investigators carried out their enquiries. Any witnesses to the collision should ring investigating officers at Chigwell road policing unit on 0300 333 4444.

MP fears health plan for travellers 22nd June 2009

A MOVE which could see gypsies and travellers given preferential medical treatment has been criticised by Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing who believes it would create an "unbearable strain" locally. She has written to Health Secretary Andy Burnham following publication of guidelines to NHS practitioners, advising them to give preferential treatment to members of the gypsy and traveller community, as part of the Primary Care Service Framework. Mrs Laing said: "There is already considerable pressure on GPs and my local hospital as well as a severe shortage of dentists in the Epping Forest district. "In addition the Government is ordering Epping Forest district to provide 39 new pitches for gypsies and travellers between now and 2011. Indeed, the district is required to provide more sites (44.7 per 1,000 new dwellings) in relation to new dwellings than any other local authority in the . This disproportionate requirement would have put impossible pressure on the infrastructure of the area even before the publication of today’s guidelines. "On average there are two caravans per pitch, which could amount to up to 500 gypsies and travellers moving into Epping Forest district, all of whom would have preferential access to local health services under these new guidelines. This would create an unbearable strain on local amenities which are already struggling to cope with the everyday needs of my constituents." Mrs Laing is asked Mr Burnham to confirm what additional resources will be made available to the district's health services to enable them to carry out the extra statutory responsibilities being imposed on them. Her letter ends: "We all agree that gypsies and travellers must be treated equally in accessing NHS services, but attempts to create a balanced and integrated society, including within it gypsies and travellers, will be damaged if local people see their own families suffer as a result of the Government giving priority to gypsies and travellers."

North Pole marathon raises cash 16th June 2009

ADVENTUREOUS Jon O’Shea has raised over £15,000 after completing the North Pole Marathon. Jon, tax partner at Loughton-based chartered accountants and business advisers Haslers, finished in 25th place - in 7hrs 46mins 44secs. Running alongside 37 other competitors, consisting mostly of experienced international athletes, Jon raised much needed money for The Meningitis Research Foundation - a registered charity which runs dynamic, effective and free awareness programmes for the public and health professionals. Jon, who suffered with meningitis when he was two, hopes to eventually raise £25,000. The 26.2 miles were over frozen ice flows at temperatures of minus 37 degrees C. Jon said: “It is a cold that cuts deep inside of you way beyond the skin layers and it just stays there inside draining away your internal heat and energy and at times your spirit.” The marathon is run over nine laps of a near three-mile course around base camp with the laps configured so competitors are always visible from the camp allowing them to defrost at intervals during the race. The race is run at Camp Barneo, a drifting ice camp set up each year for a six-week period and overseen by Russian explorer Victor Boyarsky. It is an extraordinary place set up from scratch annually, including the making of a runway over 1,000 metres long that can accommodate up to 50 visitors at a time. Jon is now preparing for the last three races he needs to accomplish to achieve the Grand Slam status of having completed a marathon on every continent, and also the North Pole - a feat which has currently only been achieved by another 40 people in the world. To sponsor Jon, visit his Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/mensa . He is grateful for any contribution towards The Meningitis Research Foundation.

New layout planned for church 15th June 2009

A RECTOR who has come up with plans to redesign her church believes the proposals are "exciting and energising". A bequest from Lucy Lussignea would pay for the work at St Martin's Church, Ongar. The plans have the support of the Parochial Church Council. Writing in the latest church magazine, Rev Susan Cooper said: "Our current ordering does not reflect our Eucharistic focus and seems to suggest that God is distant and only to be approached via a priest. By positioning the altar more centrally in the church our belief that God is accessible and in the midst of us is better reflected." The proposals include moving the choir to behind the altar. Rev Cooper added: "For this to happen the existing choir stalls and those in the chancel will need to be removed and a small platform built out from the chancel step across the width of the church." She added there are "several practical spin-offs". Whoever is presiding will be able to see and be seen, even by those sitting in the side aisle and also by the organist, and wheelchairs, pushchairs and people who have difficulty negotiating steps will be able to go up into the chancel area. A small worship area would be created between the two altars which could be used for smaller services and informal worship. Sight lines for weddings and funerals will also be improved, Rev Cooper said. Her magazine article adds: "There will be an altar rail so kneeling to receive Communion will still be possible but both the rail and the altar will be movable to give flexibility. It will be easier to stage concerts or other performances should we ever wish to do so." Rev Cooper said: "I hope after due consideration the vast majority of the church will find the scheme exciting and energising. Change, especially of things we love, is always difficult and is often a mixture of sadness and excitement. I do hope that re-ordering will prove more excitement than sadness for all of us." The plans can be viewed at the back of the church.

More Neighbourhood Watch schemes planned 12th June 2009

THE possibility of setting up new Neighbourhood Watch schemes will be discussed at an open meeting at Murray Hall, Borders Lane, Loughton, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Wednesday, June 24. Neighbourhood Essex Watch administrator Colin Freeman said: “I am looking for residents to take part in a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. These schemes can either be large, covering, for example, most of the households on an estate or they might involve just half a dozen houses. It depends on the area and what people living there want. It brings local people together and can make a real contribution to improving their lives. The activity of

watch members can foster a new community spirit and a belief in the community ’s ability to tackle problems. At the same time, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours are keeping an eye on your property." Mr Freeman added: "Neighbourhood Watch is something that takes up a minimal amount of time, it helps police and residents work together in making areas safer and hopefully free from crime. Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest crime initiatives ever and is very successful. “All I ask of you is, if you can, spare a few hours a month to speak to your neighbours and pass on all relevant information to them that we give to you. This may be by putting a note through their door or even letting them know through general conversation, we leave this entirely up to you. "We also hope you work with us by passing information back to us that you receive from around your local area. "I am looking for people who would be able to help bring the local community closer together by becoming a member of Neighbourhood Watch. If you feel that you could fulfil this role, please contact me on 01279 621862.”

Campaign launches online auction 11th June 2009

FUNDRAISING for the Help Thomas campaign is entering new territory with an eBay auction. Thomas Boyle, three, who lives in Loughton, is severely autistic and the second child in his family to suffer this fate. But parents Kate and Paul are doing all they can to raise money to get to America where they can access the Autism Treatment Center of America which offers a unique and very different approach to dealing with autistic children. The centre is credited with achieving remarkable results and courses include intensive training for parents as well as the child. Paul said: “Having had the experience of loosing one child to a system which means he is now in a residential specialist college far away from the family home, we knew we had to find a way to get a much better outcome for Thomas." A fundraising event earlier this month at the Metropolitan Police Sports Club, Chigwell, with Paul ’s band providing the entertainment, raised over £4,000. So many good quality raffle prizes were given that the idea of an online auction was born. Kate said: “We were stunned with the response, the number of tickets sold but most especially by the items donated. If we can get enough interest in the auction items and raise more money then we can be confident about booking our tickets for January 2010.” Auction items include a clay pigeon shooting and coaching session at Sayes Park shooting school, Hertfordshire, a Red Letter Day driving experience, a flying lesson at Stapleford Airfield, first-class family rail tickets and a three course dinner for four people in their own home. Eagle -eyed sighting sparks owl rescue 11th June 2009

A YOUNG owl is being cared for after it was found in the road along Canes Lane, North Weald. Epping Forest District Council’s animal warden Lyn Cook was called out by a resident in Coopersale to collect a young Little Owl. which had been found outside Harlow Garden Centre, at Hastingwood.

Although it was unharmed, it appeared hungry and lethargic. It was taken to a specialist handler who will ensure it is correctly fed and cared for enabling it to build up its strength before its release back into the wild. The council said that although this bird appeared tame, it cannot be kept in captivity and for its survival needs to be released as quickly as possible. A spokesman added that at this time of year, there are a number of young birds leaving their nest. They may look abandoned but their parents are normally close by so they should not be touched, unless they are in imminent danger where advice should be sought.

Planners support health centre 10th June 2009

APPROVAL is set to be given for a new health centre in Roydon. District council planning officers are recommending that plans to partially demolish the existing chemist shop at 100 High Street and build a two-storey health centre accommodating a dispensing chemist, dentist and doctors surgery are given the go-ahead - despite a mixed reaction from villagers. Roydon Parish Council supports the proposal saying it will improve health and associated facilities in the village. Prospective Conservative MP Robert Halfon is also backing the plans saying they would be an asset to Roydon. Eight letters of support have been received by the district council, which will discuss the plans on Wednesday (June 17) while there have also been four letters of objection. Among the objections are concerns about the lack of parking. A planning officer's report to the committee states: "The proposed development is acceptable. Notwithstanding this there is no evidence of support provided by any NHS or private body which may potentially wish to occupy the proposed facility." The report adds: "There is no parking provision within the scheme. For a healthcare facility parking would usually be expected at a single space per member of full-time staff plus two spaces for each consulting room. This would result in a requirement for 13 spaces. However, in this instance the local roads have no restrictions and a free public car park is available a short distance away in Beaumont Park Drive." The officer adds the location is close to the station, and Harlow Road which is served by four bus routes at peak hours, with the 381 service at regular intervals throughout the day.

Housing scheme set for go -ahead 10th June 2009

A MAJOR housing development on the outskirts of Waltham Abbey is being recommended for approval. District councillors, when they meet on Wednesday (June 17) will be asked to give the go- ahead for 119 two, three and four-bedroom homes, at The Limes and White Lodge, in Sewardstone Road. The development also includes a community building and shop. Ninety-five of the properties are designated as 'affordable' housing with a split tenure of rented and shared ownership. The London borough of Waltham Forest is opposed saying there should be more extensive planting should along the site boundaries. The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority would like a revised design which takes into account the site's position on the edge of the green belt.

31/07/2009 Everything Epping Forest Page 9 of 14

A planning officer's report states: "The proposal will result in a development in line with that approved at outline stage and which would fit well within the character of the area. The scheme will provide 95 additional affordable houses, helping to achieve the council’s housing needs target. The access, internal road layout and parking provision have been designed in negotiation with Essex County Highways and are considered suitable for this location, and the scheme is considered acceptable in terms of landscaping, ecology and impact on neighbouring properties."

The council is now providing seven days a week coverage with Sean covering the majority of the week and the remaining days covered by fellow employee David Sweeting. Town clerk Mark Squire said: "We are looking forward to working with Sean and I am sure the extra coverage will enhance the local environment. I am only too pleased that the vast majority of local residents continue to use the litter bins provided by the council. However it is unfortunate and bewildering that a few spoil it for others. "The council continuously receives reports of tin cans and bottles that are left in the play areas and present an obvious threat to young children who use the facilities. I can only appeal to those few to discard their rubbish sensibly."

MONEY MATTERS: Monthly column 4th June 2009

IN their latest monthly column for Everything Epping Forest, Loughton-based accountants Haslers focus on The Financial Services Authority, furnished holiday lettings and warn of an email scam.

THE Financial Services Authority has provided a table listing the largest UK deposit takers.

The list shows how the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) limits would apply for most customers but is not a complete list of deposit takers covered by the FSCS. If a bank or building society authorised by the FSA is unable to pay back deposits held with it, the FSCS can pay 100 per cent of the first £50,000 of an eligible depositor's claim, per authorised institution. Where a person holds accounts with two or more UK deposit takers covered by a single authorisation, then the FSCS will only pay up to the maximum limit of £50,000 in total, regardless of how many different institutions a person holds accounts with and/or the number of accounts they hold. In the case of customers with joint accounts, FSCS will assume the money in that account is split equally unless there is evidence to suggest otherwise. This means each account holder in a joint account would be eligible for compensation up to the maximum limit of £50,000. For more details, visit http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/linked_deposits.pdf

THE Budget 2009 contained announcements about significant changes to the rules for furnished holiday lettings (FHL) but those who are affected may have to act fast. The main changes are: an extension of the furnished holiday lettings scheme to properties in the European Economic Area (EEA) (previously it was thought the property had to be in the UK). This change is being made due to the possible incompatibility of the rules with European law. the removal of the scheme, and its advantageous tax treatments, completely from April 2010. Unlike general property rental businesses, FHLs are treated as a trade for certain taxation purposes, which is generally more preferential in terms of loss and capital gains tax reliefs.

It may be worthwhile making claims for FHL treatment for properties in the EEA including those for which tax returns have already been submitted and where the property has actually been disposed of in the last few years. HMRC has indicated that, in the correct circumstances, late claims and amendments will be accepted in relation to this matter. The first deadline is 31 July 2009, although later deadlines may apply in certain circumstances. If you believe you may have or have had a property which qualifies for FHL treatment, please get in touch. For more details visit http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2009/furnished -hol -lets -1015.htm

MP to pay back £25,000 3rd June 2009

EPPING Forest MP Eleanor Laing is to pay back £25,000 after it was claimed she avoided paying £180,000 in capital gains tax over the sale of her London home. The Daily Telegraph reported that Mrs Laing claimed more than £80,000 from the public purse towards mortgage interest and service payments on two adjacent flats in Westminster saying she was able to claim parliamentary expenses on the properties because she nominated them as her second home. The newspaper said she made at least £1m profit when she sold the flats for £1.8m last August, which would have left her with a £180,000 capital gains tax bill if she had declared the flats as her second home to HM Revenue & Customs. However, after consulting solicitors, Mrs Laing was told that for tax purposes she could nominate the flats as her 'primary residence' meaning she paid nothing. That enabled her to use the profit from the sale to buy outright another flat in the same block for £900,000, the newspaper claimed. Mrs Laing, the Shadow Justice Minister, has written to constituents detailing her actions. Her letter stated: "I have always been scrupulous about the way in which I have carried out my responsibilities as a public servant in spending taxpayers’ money and I am deeply hurt by this attack on my integrity. I would have paid the tax if it had been due, but it was not due. By last summer the Westminster flat had, in practical terms, become my main home and therefore, as HMRC rules designate, Capital Gains Tax was not payable when I sold it. My house in Theydon Bois, for which I have never claimed a penny of taxpayers’ money, will be liable for Capital Gains Tax when it is eventually sold." Mrs Laing's letter goes on: "The criticism occurs because, when I first became an MP, I designated the flat as my 'second home' and I did not think of changing that designation when my circumstances changed following the birth of my son and then my divorce. I had, however, continued to claim the Parliamentary Additional Costs Allowance to help pay the

31/07/2009 Everything Epping Forest Page 12 of 14

mortgage on the flat. I now realise that this is inconsistent. "I had not planned to sell the flat but financial circumstances following my divorce made this necessary and I used the proceeds of the sale to buy a smaller flat in the same block. Since I moved to the smaller flat in August 2008 I have obviously not claimed any mortgage interest from the Additional Costs Allowance. I respect the fact that many people who live in Epping Forest travel daily to London while I am fortunate to have a London base as well as a constituency base. From now on I will pay all the costs of my flat, with no help from the taxpayer." Mrs Laing added: "I could explain in detail the legal position and why I have broken no rules, but I fully appreciate that people are fed up with that approach. I care far more about my integrity than about money. I am uncomfortable with the thought that I may have used taxpayers’ money in a way that is questionable. I have, therefore, decided voluntarily to send £25,000 of taxpayers’ money back to the House of Commons authorities. This is a considerable amount of money so I am talking to my bank about obtaining a loan to enable me to pay it immediately. "I wholeheartedly support David Cameron’s decisive actions to make the system open and clear. I submitted all my expenses claims to the Conservative Party scrutiny committee when it was first set up some weeks ago and I will do whatever they might require of me when they have considered the matter. "I understand why there is public anger over the whole issue of MPs’ expenses. The system is dreadful. I have spent my whole working life trying to bring our democratic system into the modern age and to reform Parliament so that it broadly reflects the people it represents. I continue that work daily as Shadow Minister for Justice. "All politicians have a hard task ahead to win back the confidence and to earn the respect of the country. My work on behalf of the people of Epping Forest will continue to be my first priority. I am very sorry that all of this has happened but I hope that I have been able to set the record straight."

Cameron supports MP Laing 3rd June 2009

CONSERVATIVE Party leader David Cameron has offered his support to Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing saying she has "done the right thing" by paying back £25,000. A spokesman for Mr Cameron said: “Eleanor has done the right thing by paying back this considerable amount of money. Her circumstances were complicated by her divorce and she has the support of the Conservative Party over this issue." Meanwhile Epping Forest Conservative Association has given Mrs Laing its "total support".

Association chairman Matt Colling said: "Mrs Laing has been in constant contact with me since this issue arose, and immediately requested a meeting with the officers of the association in order to refute the allegation. We have accepted her explanation and endorse her action in writing at length to all our members. "The officers are totally supportive of Mrs Laing and are pleased that she also has the support of David Cameron and the Conservative Party at this difficult time."

MP facing "quit now" calls 3rd June 2009

OPPOSITION parties are calling on Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing to quit in the wake of allegations surrounding capital gains tax and the sale of her London flat. Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner councillor Ann Haigh said: "Many residents, who themselves work long hours but still commute daily into London, are already questioning the need for our MP to have a second home. If these new revelations are found to be correct, Eleanor Laing should do three things - repay the money straight away, apologise to her constituents and step down, letting the residents of Epping Forest elect a MP they deserve.“ Mrs Haigh has launched a petition at www.ourcampaign.org/eleanorlaing Steven Neville, press officer for the Epping Forest Green Party, said: "Unfortunately she has brought politics into disrepute like all the Westminster parties. She should cause a by- election rather than standing down at the next election to get a golden handshake payment."

Village homes plan faces opposition 2nd June 2009

REVISED plans for a housing development in Moreton are being recommended for refusal. Council planning officers say Development Company’s proposals for eight two- bedroom to five-bedroom homes on green belt land at Matthews Yard, Harlow Road, will be “unacceptably dominant and visually intrusive and out of character with the surrounding area”. The parish council is objecting saying the homes would be an overdevelopment with no ‘affordable’ housing included. An original application was rejected in January last year. A report to the district council’s area plans committee next Wednesday (June 10) states: “Under the previous scheme that was refused, the council considered the special circumstances put forward did not outweigh the harm the development would cause in relation to the openness, appearance and character of the green belt. It was also considered the construction of eight open market homes with no affordable housing on site and only £400,000 to facilitate the purchase of existing properties to be used as affordable housing in the two nearest towns (North Weald or Ongar) was inadequate to justify a development of this size and scale within the green belt.” Planners say no additional very special circumstances have been put forward from those submitted before. The revised scheme proposes £200,000 to facilitate the purchase of properties for affordable housing off-site, a sum increased to £251,000 following post application discussions but significantly less than the sum offered under the previous application. The report adds: “The applicant has argued the amount of affordable housing should not be the same due to the decrease in the overall value of the site and the potential building and sale prices of the dwellings.” The application and supporting documentation was referred to the council’s housing officer who accepts the argument put forward about the amount of affordable housing that can be contributed due to the evidence contained within the viability assessment. The council adds that it could not reasonably expect to receive any greater contribution than the £251,000 offered. Although the council accepts the amount of affordable housing contribution is acceptable for the size of the scheme it still there should be some form of on-site affordable housing for the benefit of the local community and to provide some justification to outweigh the harm the development would cause on the Green Belt.

Prospective Conservative MP Robert Halfon is demanding action over a Nazeing recycling centre following another large-scale incident this year. Dozens of firefighters were called to Birchwood Industrial Estate, off Hoe Lane, on Saturday afternoon. Crews remained on the scene overnight after the fire broke out in 100 tonnes of wood chippings. Mr Halfon wrote to the Environment Agency in January following the last blaze which burned for several days saying the site is a danger to local residents. Speaking after Saturday's fire, Mr Halfon - who will be contesting the Harlow constituency, which includes Nazeing, Hastingwood, Roydon and Sheering at the next general election - said: "This latest blaze only underlines what I said before, that the site is a danger to local people and the use of the site for storing wood chippings should be stopped. "The site is not suitable for such a use and it is unfair on the people who live nearby to have this potential hazard sitting on their doorsteps." He added: "It is time that the authorities took notice of what is happening on the site, and do something immediately to ensure that such incidents cannot happen again. It is time that something is done.” "The only way to do that is to impose a ban on the storage of wood chippings which have been a sitting timebomb in recent months. What we need is a full public inquiry into the site so that all the evidence can be considered." Saturday's blaze is the third in recent years, Mr Halfon said. Supermarkets eye up car park site 1st June 2009

THE former Church Hill car park in Loughton could be developed with a supermarket and homes. Epping Forest District Council's cabinet is being asked to agree to the site being put on the open market as a freehold site or for a long-term lease agreement 16 months after planning permission was given for eight one-bedroom and two two-bedroom flats on the site. The council later withdrew the site from sale to await an improvement in the residential sales market. A report to the June 8 cabinet meeting states: "There is currently a buoyant market for supermarket sites and the council could dispose of the site on a long-term lease which has the potential to provide a good investment with a substantial income stream. "Affordable housing at least equivalent to the previous residential scheme could be incorporated into the development. "The provision of a small supermarket would provide a useful local facility which is currently lacking in the immediate area and reinforce the valuable service of the petrol filling station." The council has been approached by two major companies interested in developing the site as a supermarket either independently or in conjunction with the adjoining Esso petrol station.

Big turnout for hall open day 1st June 2009

MORE than 1,000 attended the Copped Hall spring open day when visitors could tour the mansion, grounds and walled garden. Visitors could see the now enlarged interior following extensive renovation. Additional rooms which could be viewed were the Morning Room which serves as a function/music room, and the partly-renovated Grand Salon with its magnificent views of the grounds. This could be accessed via the newly-opened personal rooms of Ernest Wythes, the last owner and resident of the hall. There was an exhibition of watercolours and drawing by artist Mark Luckhurst, a demonstration of producing yarn with a spinning wheel and the newly opened Time Line, Natural History and Archaeological Rooms. Two members of the Copped Hall Friends played the recently-acquired Broadwood piano. In the grounds a demonstration of the use of live ferrets proved popular and the Copped Hall Rolls Royce was on display. Other stalls sold Copped Hall produce, plants, woodwork items and refreshments. Of great interest were the current archaeological excavations of the site of the Tudor Mansion in the grounds, where archaeologists described the nature of the work and some interesting discoveries. The event raised nearly £10,000 which will be used to help the work of restoration at Copped Hall.
