WELCOME 2019 River Kings Media Guide A new era of Indoor

In June of 2018, the Cedar Rapids Titans were purchased by a new ownership group led by LA-based businessman Roy Choi and his -based colleague Matt Stone. The upcoming year will be the team’s eighth of operations as a part of the . As a part of the transition of ownership, the organization brought on new management with the intention to refocus the team’s commitment to Cedar Rapids. We identified three primary goals as part of the relaunch: put a competitive team on the field, provide a high-quality entertainment experience at the U.S. Cellular Center for the fan base, and focus their energy on the community that supports the team. In addition to their updated mission, the team decided to take on a re-brand of the organization to draw a clear and concise line that this is an entirely new group of owners and staff with the intention to be great stewards of the community, the best partners they can be for their sponsors, and to compete on the field and in the community in an effort to become the best local sports organization in Eastern . He also spent 2002-03 with the af2’s Mohegan Wolves. Over the last two years, Stoute spent time with the Jacksonville Sharks of the AFL and NAL (2016-17). He was also with the of the IFL to begin the 2017-18 season. Mark currently resides in Connecticut. He attended Kentucky State University in Frankfort where he majored in Business Management and Computer Science. He has been a member of the Coaches Association since 1995 and during the Fall, works with an area program.

7 Football Staff 2019 River Kings Media Guide Michael Custer | Assistant Head Coach Michael Custer will return to Cedar Rapids, a place he called home for four seasons from 2013-16, to serve once again as a part of Mark Stoute’s coaching staff and as the River Kings’ Assistant Head Coach. Coach Custer spent the 2017 IFL season as the offensive line coach of the Iowa Barnstormers and began the 2018 season, their championship winning year, on the staff before taking a leave of absence. Prior to joining the Barnstormers, he helped the Titans to four-straight playoff appearances and a 40-17 record. During his time in Cedar Rapids, the franchise earned the distinction as the 2014 IFL Franchise of the Year and Stoute was named the 2013 IFL Coach of the Year.

Stoute and Custer have a long history together that dates back to the 1980s during their time playing semi-professional football in Connecticut. After his collegiate career at the University of Buffalo and then professional playing career, Custer went on to coach in high school, college, and eventually in the arena and indoor football leagues. Joey Smith | DEfensive coordinator Joey Smith returns to the Cedar Rapids after a three-year absence to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator for the 2019 IFL season. In 2015 as defensive coordinator, Smith’s defense gave up an average of just 50.3 rushing yards per game and limited opponents to 129.1 yards per game through the air. The defensive squads’ effort went a long way in powering the team to a 9-5 regular season record and a United Conference Championship appearance. After his time in Cedar Rapids, Smith spent time with the Jacksonville Sharks of the NAL. The Sharks led the NAL in scoring defense (24.9 pts/game) and had the highest turnover margin in the NAL (+26, 2.17/game) in Smith’s year as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.

Smith spent 14 years at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania before coming to Cedar Rapids in 2015. Prior to that, he had a short stint in the NFL. Smith returned kickoffs and punts and saw action at and for the Giants from 1991-94. He was a defensive back and kick returner at the University of Louisville and played on the Cardinals’ 1990 championship team. Smith graduated from Louisville in 1991.

Dr. Dustin Arnold | Team Physician Dr. Dustin Arnold is an internist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is affiliated with UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital. He received his medical degree from College of Osteopathic Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Arnold joined St. Luke’s in 2006 and was named Chief Medical Officer/Chief Medical Information Officer in 2014. He is also Medical Director of the Wound Healing Clinic and Hyperbaric Chamber. Dr. Chris Bowers | Team Chiropractor

Dr. Bowers practices at the Chiropractic Clinic of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is a 2008 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Western State College of Colorado in Professional Biology. He is a member and past District President and Compliance Committee Chair of the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS) and a member of The American Chiropractic Association. He is a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (C.C.E.P) and is certified in Functional Movement Screens (FMS). He currently serves on the Board of Directors with His Hands Free Medical Clinic and Healing Our Heroes. Dr. Bowers is a Cedar Rapids native and graduate of Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School.

9 Dance Team and DJ 2019 River Kings Media Guide Jen Marks | Dance Team Director

Jen will enter her first season as a dance team director in 2019 with the River Kings. After graduating with her BA from Central College in 2012, she spent two seasons as a Rider Girl for the and was also a Titan Doll for four seasons. During her time with the Titans, Jen helped choreograph multiple routines, attended promotional events, and assisted with the Junior Dolls dance program. One of her fondest memories came when she was proposed to on the field following one of her Titan Dolls’ half-time performances. While completing her final season as a Doll, Jen also attended Kirkwood Community College where she earned her AAS degree in Dental Assisting. She now works as a certified dental assistant in Solon. Prior to her professional dance career, Jen danced for both her high school (Mount Vernon) and college alma maters at the state and national level. Jen and her husband, Justin, live in Cedar Rapids with their daughter Ellie Kaye and black lab. She enjoys spending time with family, reading, watching Hawkeye football and wrestling, and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and traveling. Dance Team Members Jessica C Darrian S Jackie R Kaelyn E Captain Kaitie C Nico S Taylor K Troy Williams | DJ Troy Williams, a.k.a. DJ Commando, is the DJ for the Cedar Rapids River Kings. He was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and started at radio station KOJC 89.7 FM back in 1983. While doing radio for 13 years, he also performed at openings for Ice Cube, Too Short, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock & Tony Toni Tone and others. In 1990, Williams was signed to an independent label out of New York with the group Soldiers N Command which is where the DJ name “Commando” originated. Williams has also worked for KBOL 100.1 FM in Waterloo, Iowa, was on an episode of Rap city, and has worked on the internet radio station www.1073vip.com “Iced Out Radio” where he was the Assistant Music Director. Williams has a non-profit organization, Iowa Underground Music Movement (IUMM), which helps Iowa entertainers. He currently performs at major events and clubs and opens up for artists Plies, T.I. Zapp, Tech Nine, Kid Ink, Scarface, and others. He also serves at KBBG 88.1 FM in Waterloo as an on air personality/Music Director, works at Mixshow for Hot 95.7 FM (iHeart Radio) and has his own station, KNHB Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Please contact Ryan Eucker to schedule interviews not arragned during practice. Practices River King practices are open to the media. During the 2019 season the team will be practicing at Twisters Gymnastics, located at 4625 Tower Terrace Road in Cedar Rapids. The team will periodically practice at the US Cellular Center, located at 370 1st Ave NE, depending on availability. Weekly practice times and team schedules will be released to the River King’s media distribution list, highlighting practice times and locations. The list will also receive team press releases and updates. Media members should enter through the rear service door, located on the A Ave side of the US Cellular Center where there will be a member of the River Kings to distribute credentials. At the conclusion of his senior season, branch became the first Saint to be named to the NSAA All-Conference First Team Defense and to the AFCA Coaches’ All-American Defense First Team. During the season, he was also honored as a NSAA Defensive Player of the Week and NAIA National Defensive Player of the week, which was also a program first. After serving as Assistant Commissioner during the 2013 season, Allshouse was voted Commissioner on December 16, 2013 by the IFL’s Board of Directors. No stranger to the IFL, Allshouse is entering his tenth season as a leadership official within the IFL League Office. Joining the IFL in 2009, Allshouse has grown within the organization, previously holding the positions of Director of Communication, Director of Football Operations, and Assistant Commissioner. 30 IFL Glossary of Terms 2019 River Kings Media Guide Alley - is the area bordered by the outside shoulders of the two offensive guards. The alley is established at the and does not move during the . Belt - is the area five yards beyond the defensive . The belt runs sideline to sideline. The belt disappears at the snap. Blitzer - the player who identifies himself to the offensive team and the officials as a potential blitzer by virtue of his alignment and raising his hand (if two are present in the box). He must be located in the alley, behind the defensive box at the snap. In the Bank - means a penalty which cannot be administered on the kick-off, but will be enforced prior to the next from scrimmage. The half may not end with a penaltiy in the bank. In such cases, there will be an un-timed down. Offensive Motion - in the Indoor Football League the offense is allowed to have two men in forward motion prior to the snap of the ball. Scrimmage Kick A. If a scrimmage kick goes out of bounds through the receiving team’s end zone it is a , and it belongs to the receiving team at the five (5) yard line. B. When a failed attempt becomes dead in the end zone, it is a touchback and the ball belongs to the receiving team and is placed on the receiving team’s five (5) yard line. C. If a scrimmage kick goes out of bounds through the sideline beyond the receiving team’s twenty (20) yard line, without touching the ground or a member of the receiving team, the ball belongs to the receiving team at its twenty (20) yard line. D. If a scrimmage kick goes out of bounds before reaching the receiving team’s twenty (20) yard line, the ball belongs to the receiving team at the spot it went out of bounds. E. If a scrimmage kick goes out of bounds, through the sideline, after touching the ground or a member of either team and before possession is gained, it belongs to the receiving team at the spot the ball went out of bounds. F. If a scrimmage kick hits the ceiling, or any object suspended from the ceiling of the facility, the ball is immediately dead and it belongs to the receiving team at their twenty (20) yard line, or the receiving team may choose to have a re-kick. If a field goal or conversion attempt hits the obstruction, the attempt may be judged to be good if the Officials conclude that the attempt would have been successful in the absence of the obstruction. If the attempt is judged to be no good then the ball is spotted at the five (5) yard line. Stunting or Twisting - When a defensive lineman is rushing the passer, there is no “stunting” or “twisting”. Rouge - a team is awarded one point for a rouge if any of the following conditions are met: 1) A rouge may only be scored on free kicks and is scored when a member of the receiving team is not able to advance a free kick out of his own endzone, or the player is declared down in their own endzone. 2) A rouge will be awarded to the kicking team if the receiving team commits a penalty in the receiving team’s endzone and the ball has not been advanced out of the endzone. Field Goal Posts - are ten (10) feet wide by 18-20 feet tall with the bottom cross-bar hung 10 feet above the ground. Field goal posts are hung from the arena ceiling. FIeld of Play - game fields are 50-yards long with up to 8-yard endzones. The field is 28-yards wide and marked every five-yards with wall-to-wall lines. 12” hash marks begin five-feet from the center of the field. Scoring - touchdowns are worth six (6) points, conversion place-kicks are one (1) point, conversion pass or run is two (2) points, field goals are three (3) points, a safety is two (2) points, and a rouge is one (1) point. Overtime - there is no limit to the number of overtime periods. Each consists of a series by each offense. Offensive Unit - eight (8) players will be active on the field during scrimmage consisting of three down lineman. Four playersmust be lined up on the line of scrimmage before the snap occurs. Two men can be in forward motion prior to the snap of the ball. Defensive Unit - eight (8) players will be active on the field during scrimmage consisting of three down lineman. The jack-linebackeris not required to be in the defensive box. If he is, the blitzing linebacker must identify himself.

2019 PREVIEW: For the second time in two years the Quad City Steamwheelers begin a new era in 2019. The historic organization was revived in 2017 and played in the Champions Indoor Football league (CIF) last season. The team finished the 2018 season with an 8-5 record but fell to the in the first round of the playoffs. The Steamwheelers joined the IFL during the offseason and will restart historic rivalries with teams such the Green Bay Blizzard and Iowa Barnstormers. The Steamwheelers are led by former NFL KR Cory Ross. Under Ross, the Steamwheelers ranked in the top four in nearly every major offensive and defensive statistic last season and will look to improve in 2019. With established starters such as QB E.J Hilliard, WR Keyvon Rudd and LB Robert Jones and new talent, the Steamwheelers look to quickly impress in the IFL in 2019.

2019 PREVIEW: The San Diego Strike Force begin their inaugural season in 2019. Formally announced on November 17, 2018 the Strike Force become the IFL’s first-ever team based in California. The Strike Force, along with the Arizona Rattlers and the Tucson Sugar Skulls ,look to create strong regional rivalries in the Southwest. The Strike Force will be led by former San Diego Charger first-round draft pick Burt Grossman. Grossman spent seven seasons in the NFL and totaled 276 tackles and 43.5 career sacks. Filling out Grossman’s staff is Offensive Coordinator and former IFL QB Taylor Genuser. On offense, the Strike Force have signed QBs Derrick Bernard and Cory Murphy. In 2011, the Sioux Falls Storm defeated the Tri-Cities Fever to take home their first of six consecutive United Bowl trophies. The Arizona Rattlers and Iowa Barnstormers won the championship in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The participants of the game are determined each year during the 14 game regular season schedule followed by the top four seeds in the IFL progressing to the playoffs. The winners those game progress to the United Bowl.
