A Survival Blueprint for the Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle Pelochelys cantorii in India. EDGE of Existence programme, Zoological Society of London, UK 1. STATUS REVIEW 1.1 Taxonomy: Class : Reptilia Order : Testudines Family : Trionychidae Genus : Pelochelys Species : Pelocheys cantorii (Gray, 1864) Common Name : Cantor’s Giant softshell turtle/ Asian Giant softshell turtle/ Local name : Bheemanama, Paala poovan (Malayalam) Synonyms: Pelochelys clivepalmeri (Hoser, 2014), P. cumingii (Gray, 1864), P. poljakowii (Strauch, 1890), P. telstraorum (Hoser, 2014), P. cantoris (Boulenger, 1889) Pelochelys cantorii (Gray, 1864) is one of the three species in the genus Pelochelys. The other two species are P. bibroni and P. signifera known only from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia (Papua), respectively. P. cantorii has a large distribution across south and south-east Asia (Das, 2008). It is among the largest freshwater turtles in the world with adults reaching a carapace length of around 100 cm (Das, 2008). Sexual dimorphism is present with males having longer and thicker tales than females; something common for other softshell turtles. Females are also larger in size than males (Das, 2008). According to the last IUCN Red List of threatened species assessment for the species, Pelochelys cantorii might hide a complex of several different species (ATTWG, 2000) A B Figure 1. Cochin Estuary, Southwest Coast of India
Article Author Version of : Water, vol.12(3); 2020; Article no: 908 What controls the flushing efficiency and particle transport pathways in a tropical estuary? Cochin estuary, southwest coast of India Sebin John1, 2, Muraleedharan K.R1*, C.Revichandran1, Abdul Azeez.S1, Seena G1, 2, Pierre W Cazenave3 1 CSIR‐National Institute of Oceanography, Regional Center,Kochi 2 Research Scholar, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli 3 Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: date; Accepted: date; Published: date Abstract: Estuaries with poor flushing and longer residence time retain the effluents and pollutants, ultimately resulting in eutrophication, declining in biodiversity and, finally deterioration of water quality.Cochin Estuary (CE), southwest coast of India is under the threat of nutrient enrichment by the anthropogenic interventions and terrestrial inputs through the land runoff. The present study used the FVCOM hydrodynamic model coupled with a Lagrangian particle module (passive) to estimate the residence time and to delineate site‐specific transport pathways in the CE. Moreover, understanding the back and forth movements and residence time of particles was elucidated using metrics such as path length, net displacement, tortuosity and time to flushed out from the system. Spatio‐temporal patterns of the particle distribution in the CE showed a similar trend during monsoon and post‐monsoon with an average residence time of 25 and 30 days respectively. During the low river discharge period(pre‐monsoon),flood‐ebb velocities resulteda minimum net transport of the water andlonger residence time of 90 days compared to that of high discharge period (monsoon). During the pre‐monsoon, particle releasedat the southern upstream (station. -

Ramesh 1Research Scholar, Department of Management Studies, Kannur University, Thalaserry Campus, Palayad, Kannur-670661, Kerala, India, 2Professor, Rajagiri School of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, Ernakulam, Kerala, India. Abstract: The state of Kerala well known for its rich flora and fauna, high literacy and high health standards, have also made spectacular strides towards the green movement and has become a topic of discussions and debates in several circles. In this context, it becomes quite imperative to analyse the changing consumers’ perceptions towards Green Products. It will also help the policy makers, entrepreneurs and traders in formulating various strategies to better strive towards ‘Green Living’. A sample of 260 consumers, 52 each from 5 major Shopping Malls in the district of Ernakulam in Kerala was taken for the study. This paper tries to analyse the extent influence of certain demographic factors which influence the buying behaviour of the Green Product consumers in Kerala. Index Terms - Green Products, Demographic Factors, Buying Behaviour, Purchasing Behaviour. I. INTRODUCTION Green products have been assuming more prominence during recent years due to the growing concern all over the world about the rising number of environmental issues consequent upon the dumbing of plastic and other non-degradable materials resulting from the consumption of various products. The ever increasing population and shrinkage of cultivable areas due to the conversion for construction works and other developmental projects have aggravated these issues. -
