There have been so many things going on over the summer and I hope you can join me in congratulating those that have given their time, effort and money to support the community and local charities. For me September often feels like a new start. It is a new school year for my children and I get to meet all the pupils coming into reception at the school where I work. It is also a time when groups start up again after the summer break. As you read the AKL consider whether any of the groups needing more members might be of interest to you. Or if you're feeling adventurous you could always set up your own club. Now I have my two dogs I think Kirkby really needs a doggy social club...Whadda ya think?

As a non resident of KL , I had not realised that ‘The Friends’ was started 25 years ago by Eileen Flight in response to a request from the then Rector Canon Betteridge, who said ‘Eileen, I have a small job for you’! Eileen sadly died in June this year but she had been the chairman and inspiration to the charity for many years previously. ‘The Friends’ now have approximately 150 members and it is estimated that through their fund raising events over the 25 years, they have donated some £100,000 to the church, to cover projects from the purchase of light bulbs to boiler replacement and floodlights. The theme of our service was Friendship/Fellowship and there are many references to this theme in the Bible. Why ? Because Jesus realised the importance of friendship between humans. When He sent his disciples out to preach the gospel, He sent them in twos, because He realised in some cases, it would be a tough job, and the two friends would be mutually supportive. In our service, Annette Skillen read some Bible extracts to us, the last of which was verse 27 from Genesis ‘So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.’ God did not make humans to necessarily look like Him, but we do have similar thought patterns and emotions to God. This is what science says makes us different to the animals, we have a conscience and a soul, and God wants a friendship with us. The most important relationship we will ever have is our relationship with God. This allows us to be part of God changing things for the better, building His kingdom here on earth. Our relationship with God is what continues after our death, in heaven. God longs to share in our lives, to help us, and to listen to and answer our prayers. I urge us all to make this a priority in our lives. ‘The Friends’ are not only interested in the history of St Mary’s, but in its future as a meeting place for the friends of Kirkby Lonsdale. So how about becoming a ‘Friend of St Mary’s’ if you are not one already? Current Chairman Pat France (015242 71740) will be pleased to hear from you, and you will be made very welcome. (LADFAS) Report: Tuesday 21st June 2016

“Edwin Lutyens”

Anthea Streeter gave an enthralling lecture on what one would have expected to be an extremely dry subject – the architect, Edward Lutyens. In 1720, one of Lutyens forebears had moved from Holland to and worked as a shipping agent. He was successful and remained here changing his name from Lutkin to Lutyens. The family were firmly rooted in the upper middle class, having a town house in South Kensington and another in Thursley in Surry. Edwin, a sickly child, and one of seven siblings, never went to school, preferring to roam the countryside admiring the vernacular buildings. By the time he was seventeen he determined to become an architect. He enrolled in the South Kensington School of Art, but never finished the two year course, feeling that they had taught him as much as they could. Daringly, at the age of just nineteen he set up business on his own! He was given a commission by two wealthy patrons, Mr and Mrs Chapman. His “Grand Design” was in the “Old English the Style” which included half timbering, steep pitched rooves and tiles instead of slates and most importantly an imposing entrance courtyard. This style was to remain his forte for some time. During this period, he met the influential gardener, Gertrude Jekyll who had been at South Kensington Art School some time before Lutyens. She too commissioned a house from Lutyens. Photographs taken of the interiors of these houses show how the furnishings mirrored the Elizabethan Great Houses, incorporating oak furniture and turkey carpets. Jekyll introduced Lutyens to the wealthy bachelor, Edward Hudson, who had just started the magazine, “Country Life” and who pictured all the new houses Lutyens was to build. At about this time he married the Countess of Lytton’s daughter, Emily. The Countess did not think him at all suitable. His style, by now had changed, to mirror the works of Wrenn and the High Renaissance Mannerist School. This can be seen clearly in his reconstruction of Hudson’s castle at Lindisfarne, The Royal Hospital at Chelsea and the enormous buildings of Castle Drogo and the Abbey House at Barrow-in-. All embraced “Tudor Military” aspects of design. Lutyens was abroad a great deal and Lady Emily, who now had five children, became increasingly fretful. She espoused Theo sophism, the women’s suffrage movement, and became a socialist, at exactly the time Lutyens was being asked to create the new government building for the “English Raj” in Delhi. They never parted but continued their relationship with frequent letters, though they mostly lived apart! Lutyens started the Delhi building in 1912 but did not finish until after the end of the First World War in 1929. His other great buildings were the Cenotaph in London – (built of wood and plaster so as to be in time for the celebrations for then end of the war, and later built of stone) many war memorials, the Baroque Midland Bank and the Liverpool Roman Catholic Cathedral (not finished to his plan in his lifetime). His output was enormous, many of his buildings harking back to earlier times, but all were very grand and imposing!

There will be no lectures until Tuesday September 20th when Gillian Hovell BA will give a lecture entitled “Roman Britain Unearthed – What the Romans really did for Art”. Then, lectures will start again promptly at 2.15pm. Fanny Leech,Old Manor House, 14 Mill Brow, Kirkby Lonsdale. LA6 2AT (015242 72009) Mill House Cottages Highly Commended

A CUMBRIA based self catering holiday accommodation provider has been highly commended in their category at the 14th Cumbria Tourism Awards. One of four nominees in the Self Catering Holiday of the Year category, Mill House Cottages were judged highly by the panel, and although they were not awarded the highest honour, they were singled out for particular praise. The awards, held on Wednesday 22nd June at Racecourse, highlight local businesses who offer memorable visitor experiences and an excellent level of customer service, both aspects which Mill House Cottages pride themselves on. Many businesses recognised at the Cumbria Tourism Awards go on to receive recognition on a national scale at the Visit England awards. The standard of the entrants this year was particularly high, with an unprecedented number of entrants and a correspondingly long list of finalists. In addition to winners in each category, a number of finalists were singled out for high commendations. Julie Bolton, speaking on behalf of Mill House Cottages, said: "Stephen and I are delighted to have been awarded "Highly Commended" in these prestigious awards which celebrate excellence in Cumbria Tourism. Supported by an outstanding Team, we are proud to offer a wonderful experience in some of the best self catering properties in the region." Based in Kirkby Lonsdale, Mill House Cottages operate a range of properties across the and Yorkshire Dales. Most of their properties are self-owned and self-managed, allowing them to provide a personal touch to their holiday services. 5 Around Kirkby Lonsdale Boxes of Hope Cumbria

It may be the end of summer, but it is time to bring you news of Cumbria's 2016 Christmas shoebox campaign, covering Eden, South Cumbria and Furness. The benefits of being a “local” charity are that a team from Cumbria takes the shoeboxes and brings pictures and stories back of the children who receive them and, as a small charity we have no staff to pay, so any surplus funding goes towards longer term educational support for these children. The boxes contain educational supplies such as pens and pencils, toys (such as dolls, cars and tennis balls), sweets and hygiene items such as face cloths and soap. Children and adults alike love to fill a shoebox – it is a simple and fun thing to do, doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and it really does make a difference to a child who has none of the basics we take for granted. For these children there is none of the commercialisation we endure for weeks leading up to Christmas. Many of them have never in their lives had a gift. Many have never had a toy. Please do start looking for empty shoeboxes and shoebox bargains such as toys, games, fun items, hygiene and stationary items, warm hat/scarf/gloves/socks, sweets, and pick up a leaflet from local shops and offices, or check out our website where you can download it. The campaign runs from November 1st – 12th and more information will be released soon as to where you can drop off your shoebox in November, together with the £2 donation for transport costs. There will be a drop off point local to you! For more information, take a look at our website, www.boxesofhopecumbria.co.uk and our Facebook page. You can contact us on [email protected]. Casterton WI The July meeting began with a presentation from Greg and Sarah Morris from the Hamlin Fistula Charity based in Ethiopia. This charity was founded by Drs. Reginald and Catherine Hamlin in 1975, who set up a hospital in Addis Ababa specifically to offer women treatment for severe childbirth injuries. 9000 women a year suffer this kind of injury in Ethiopia of whom only 2500 are able to reach this hospital where treatment is free and which also trains local women in a variety of nursing skills. Casterton WI gave an extremely generous donation of £120 to this very worthwhile charity. The following month the speaker was Gemma Wren from the National Trust, whose area is South East Cumbria and . She spoke of the ‘new’ vision of the organisation where the emphasis is both on the conservation of habitat in the face of continuing expansion of towns, but also on the encouragement of the younger generation to take an interest in the natural world. Working in conjunction with local farmers and landowners and also with partners such as the National Parks, Natural England and the RSPB, the National Trust aims to manage its land in ways which protect both the countryside and coastline. At the meeting on 7 September Gordon Fletcher will be speaking about the ‘Colours and Creatures of the Northern Seas’. New members are always welcome at our meetings held at 7.30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in Casterton Village Hall. Our website – castertonwi.co.uk – has more information about our plans for this year.

SENIOR SECTION/RANGERS (girls 14 upwards) Mrs Jane Sutton 015242 74275 ROMANIA APPEAL (Together We Care)

We have decided the time has come to officially close our charity. This will happen after our Autumn visit To Romania. Things in Romania have changed, because of altered circumstances there. Sofia and Filip who have been our hosts, and co workers in our charity for almost 25 years, have moved from Arad to Bucharest. This is 500 miles away, but they feel the need to be nearer to their daughter and her family. Rodica, our main contact at the school is retiring this summer, and so will be unable to facilitate our work there. Dr Carmen our long standing contact for our work at the hospital, is also retiring. We are finding the journey more difficult now that we are getting older, and the political and security situation in Europe is very unsettled.

We are hoping to continue visiting our friends and contacts, but plan to travel by aeroplane. This obviously limits what we can take out, but we hope to continue to support some of the families as far as it is possible. Our revised plans will be tested in September. We will fly out on 12th September to Bucharest to stay with Sofia and Filip. During our stay the four of us will travel by car to Arad, to spend a few days visiting all our friends and contacts there. We hope to take out our usual donations as far as possible, and explain the situation to them all.

We are most grateful for your interest and support over the last 25 years. The gifts of goods and money have helped many individuals and projects through difficult times over the years. They join us in grateful thanks for everything you have done, showing your interest and care. If our plans go as we hope, Sofia and Filip will be visiting Kirkby Lonsdale in the future, and will be hoping to meet you again.

Thank you and God bless

Sylvia & Roy Taggart Around Kirkby Lonsdale The Rotary Club of Lunesdale

Already the club is well into the 2nd month of the new Presidency of Richard Parsons. On 7th July members enjoyed a visit to Wennington Hall School where we were invited to dinner prepared and cooked by some of the boys. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. At the meeting on 14th July Jim Bispham gave a presentation about his 2,600 mile walk along the Continental Divide in North America. Jim is a good friend to the club and members were pleased to welcome him back. Mike Willetts of the Carnforth Rotary Club was guest speaker on 4th August to talk about PhysioNet. This is a Yorkshire based charity which collects used and no longer required physiotherapy equipment including wheel chairs which is then sent to developing countries around the world where it is distributed to disabled children and adults. To find out more about this excellent charity please see www.physionet.org.uk As always the club was pleased to attend the Lunesdale Agricultural Show held at the Rugby Club at Kirkby Lonsdale on Tuesday 9th August. This year our stand was all about the horrible disease of Polio. The club actively supports the international campaign, begun in 1985, to eradicate this crippling and highly infectious disease (which mainly affects young children) from the world. It was rife in the 1940s and 50s until a vaccine was developed in America. On display was an iron lung, kindly on loan from the Rotary Club of Eden and brought to the show by Roger Frank. It is a mechanical ventilator which was used to maintain breathing following paralysis. In 1985 more than 350,000 children in 125 countries were paralysed every year by this deadly disease. Over the past 30 years Rotary International has contributed over £600, 000, 000 to the World Health Organisation Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In 2015 there were just 74 cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However the campaign continues until there are no more children or adults affected.

The Rotary stand at the show attracted lots of visitors. Many of the youngsters thought that the iron lung was a scanner but were really interested to learn about its use and importance. For every £1 donated the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match it with £2 more. Many older visitors remembered when the vaccine was administered on a cube of sugar! Today we are the lucky ones who have been fortunate to have this preventative treatment. If you would like more information about the Rotary Club please see www.lunesdale.org.uk

`Seasons of Mist and Mellow Fruitfulness’ Keats famous ode to Autumn conjures up the nostalgic English idyll of Harvest time. Lammas or `loaf-mass’ was the Anglo Saxon festival of the Wheat Harvest in August. The Celtic celebrations `Lughnasadh’ marking the beginning of the in-gathering of the Harvest and `Samhain’ marking the end of the festival as Autumn gives way to darker nights and the onset of winter. These of course pre-date Christianity, but every culture, religion and age celebrates the end of the productive season of the land and the gathering of the harvest hard won.

Food security is a big issue for the world’s population, the Global Food security Organisation states,

`The world is facing a potential crisis in terms of food security. The challenge is to provide the world’s growing population with a sustainable, secure supply of safe, nutritious, and affordable high-quality food using less land, with lower inputs, and in the context of global climate change, other environmental changes and declining resources.’

Many people in contemporary society have become detached from how our food is produced, and we have come to expect to buy cheap food from the Supermarkets without any real awareness of the complex industry and global forces that provides it.

Many dairy farmers in the UK have had to give up farming with one in 10 having closed in the last three years, with the North West loosing over 200 and Cumbria alone loosing 75.

This year the Churches in Kirkby Lonsdale are hosting a Harvest Celebration with a Harvest Supper and Hog Roast with a Ceilidh in St Mary’s Church. This is for our whole community to come together to have fun, share good food and be thankful for `all good gifts around us’ and to remember our farmers. So please look out for the Publicity and buy your Tickets.

Donations received on the night will go to Farm Crisis Network and Cumbria Agricultural Chaplaincy.

Holiday problems on the rise!

Flights that don’t exist, hotels next to rubbish dumps and cancelled transfers leaving people stranded are just some of the problems making holidays a misery. Too often people don't get what they have paid for.

To avoid your dream holiday becoming a nightmare:

 Choose a provider with an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) for security even if the company goes bust.

 Take out travel insurance from the day you book. Check the excess charges on cheap policies and make sure you insure everything you plan to do, e.g. sports.

 If the operator significantly alters your holiday before you go, you don’t have to accept and can ask for a full refund.

 If flights, transfers and accommodation are not as described, complain straight away to a rep, and if still not satisfied, use the tour operator’s complaints procedure.

 If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a replacement flight or a refund.

 Travel insurance normally pays better compensation than airlines for luggage problems.

Too good to be true? - be aware of scams.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is just that. Citizens Advice estimates that UK consumers lose £5 billion every year to scammers - criminals who play on people's dreams, and their trust, to trick them into handing over money. One in every ten people has been a victim. Don't be the next one - be scam aware, get advice and check before you hand over cash.

There is a huge variety of ways you can be conned out of your money, by mail, phone or online. Bogus agencies offering you a dream partner or job, pensions and investment schemes promising you untold riches, fake tickets, claims that you have won a prize ... they all ask you to hand over money in advance. Some scams pretend to be from your bank or computer operator, asking for passwords. What can you do about all this? Be scam aware, take your time, check things out. The Citizens Advice website (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) has lots of detailed information on scams.

For more help, contact Citizens Advice.

11 Around Kikrby Lonsdale New benches in the Hyning

Those who use the public footpath through the Hyning, between Low Biggins and High Biggins, will have noticed a few weeks ago that the bench near the top of the wood had been damaged beyond repair. This bench was placed in the Hyning in 1961 in memory of F N Dowson, who founded Cressbrook School in 1913, and has been much enjoyed by users of the Hyning footpath for some 55 years We were keen to replace the bench, as we know it is well-used, and approached John Short to see if the Christopher Robins Trust might be able to help with this. To our delight, John offered that the Trust would replace the damaged bench, and also the one at the bottom of the Hyning which looks out over the fells, and was in poor condition. So now two fine new benches have been installed in the Hyning, with a dedication to the memory of Chris and Pam Robins, and users of the footpath will once again be able to take time to enjoy the tranquillity our lovely woodland. We have saved the plaque from the “Dowson” bench, and if there is someone locally who had an association with Mr Dowson or with the school, who would like to have the plaque from the bench, please get in touch. We are very grateful to John and the other trustees of the Christopher Robins Trust for their ready support for this project, and we can be sure the benches will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for many years to come

Cathy & Stewart Mackenzie Bakers rise to the challenge in new competion

ARE you at the peak of your baking powers...or do you need to whip up some enthusiasm when it comes to making cakes? This month Country Harvest is launching its very first baking competition. As thousands of people across North sit down to watch BBC1’s Great British Bake Off next week, Country Harvest in Ingleton is calling on bakers of all ages and levels of experience to take part in the competition. The twist is that each cake has to resemble the mighty peak of Ingleborough, which Country Harvest’s coffee shop looks out on. The main event will be a baking competition on September 27thwhere entrants bring in their finished cakes (shaped like Ingleborough) ready for a panel to taste and decide the winner. The look, taste and recipe will all be taken into account and the winner will receive £100 in cash. The Food Hall/coffee shop is also planning an additional online competition where people are invited to email a photograph of their cake (shaped like Ingleborough) or send it via Facebook or Twitter. The winner, who will be chosen by an expert panel at their Ingleborough Bake Off in September, will receive an Afternoon Tea for two at Country Harvest. “Our customers are always complimenting us on our cakes in the coffee shop which looks out at Ingleborough. So it made sense to have a baking competition inspired by the peak which can be seen from miles around. Most of the team at Country Harvest love Great British Bake Off so we thought this would be a bit of fun where our customers could get involved and even win some money! We hope the event in September will be a lively one where all the entrants can enjoy meeting and chatting with other likeminded bakers...and perhaps trying a slice or two of cake as well,” said Steve West, shop manager. All pictures for the competition, sponsored by Wessex Mill Flours, must be received by Friday, September 16 and if you wish to take part in the Ingleborough Bake Off competition register your name in store, ring 015242 42223 or email [email protected] *GREAT British Bake Off contestant Howard Middleton will be passing on his baking skills at a cake making demonstration at Country Harvest in September. The baker, who hit the headlines when his custard was ‘stolen’ by another contestant on the hit show in 2013, will be at Country Harvest as part of the Ingleborough Bake Off competition. Howard, a former council worker in Sheffield, will be demonstrating his cake making skills at 5.30pm on Tuesday, September 13. Tickets costing £7.50 (including the chance to try the cake with a nice cup of tea) are available from Country Harvest or by ringing 015242 42223. August 2016 - Prize Draw Results

Thanks to the clergy team for the stimulating worship theyhave led throughout the summer, including our Patronal service. Perhaps our mostsignificant celebration was the wedding of Jonathan Barrow and Danielle Garside. The varied music featured a lusty rendition of Wonderwall, penned by the Gallagher brothers. We were delighted bythe re- emergence of Jonathan’s High School project on the history of Holy Trinity Church.Arrivals and departures in a classic single-decker bus, lovely flowerarrangements and skilled organ playing lent traditional appeal to an upbeat, modern service. Anastasia and her lively team produced several impressive concerts, showcasing the vocal and instrumental talents of Schoolpupils. We thoroughly enjoyed a lunchtimerecital in June, by young Ulverston flautist Rowan Borthwick. This was herfirst and successful solo public performance. Another programme of recitals, listed below, is planned for the new school term. Two prestigious choirs took advantage of Holy Trinity’sfacilities, mounting well attended choral concerts. Kirkby Lonsdale ChoralSociety sang folk songs from around the world, and Carnforth Choral Societygave a stirring rendition of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. Carnforth leaderMartin Webster proposes a further visit next May, to sing Mozart’s magnificent Requiem. We have taken delivery of a stunningly attractive plaque, presented by the Casterton Old Girls’ Association. It commemorates the three centuries during which Casterton School, amajor feature of the village, had Holy Trinity Church asits treasured school chapel. We hope the ever-helpful Steve Pickup will fix itin place, in addition to his invaluable help with furniture and lighting. We expectthat many Old Girls will come on Founders day and at other times, to see theplaque in place, commissioned, and blessed. Annette Benson twice opened her lovely gardens at FellYeat during the summer, drawing appreciative numbers from the immediatelocality and further afield. As usual, the congregation rallied, baking andserving excellent refreshments. Proceeds from the teas went to the churchfabric fund. It was one of those, warm, wet summers, when ivy, weeds and shrubs grew fast. We were grateful to professional gardener ChrisBradshaw for cutting the churchyard grass. His help allowed our volunteers todraw breath, before recommencing their valuable work. The new lawn near thechurch, presented by Gill Sykes, is thriving, attractive, and easy to maintain. Fabric maintenance is a bigger issue. Treasurer TomHerd reports a healthy bank balance, adequate for dealing with running repairs, but we are hindered by the non-availability of tradesmen willing to turn outfor modest improvements to stone walls and plaster. We are, additionally, unable to apply for a grant from Churchcare, which would help us fix the Chancelroof. This is due to our only being a Grade 2 – listed building, as opposed tohaving the essential Grade 2*. The first of our engaging lunchtime recitals in churchwill be given by Anastasia Micklethwaite on flute, accompanied by pianist Peter Noke. It starts at 1.30 pm, onThursday, 22 September. This is, as usual, a free recital and guaranteed to be of the highest standard. Our ongoing programme of musical offerings will be: Thursday 20 October: Amy Shaw (Mezzo Soprano)Thursday 10 November: Rhiannon Jones and String FriendsThursday 1 December: Senior School musiciansWe cordially invite you to come and enjoy thesewonderful performances. They are all at 1.30 p.m Barbon

St Bartholomew's is looking particularly well cared for thanks to the ladies who have agreed to join the cleaning rota. The church is always decorated with flowers thanks to volunteers always supported by Barbara Leaming, should they begin to droop or if anyone forgets! Despite the holiday season a good congregation have enjoyed services led by the team and the Rev Shutt from the Methodist circuit. A Llamas service was led by Rev Richard Snow to mark and give thanks to God for the harvest and the work of the farmers and gardeners in bringing in their crops. The members of Barbon WI enjoyed their July meeting in the garden of Doris Metcalfe. The sun shone for Jennifer Martindale to hold the business meeting and to hear Jane Binney give her report on the national AGM. Members had a walk around the lovely garden but then quickly went inside as the evening became chilly to enjoy a wonderful Jacobs Join supper. The WI's annual Flower Show was a great success with almost 300 entries. Lots of beautiful flowers, art work and nine entries in the gingerbread class for men, Peter Harding's was the winner. The cup for the most points in the show was Jennifer Martindale, 2nd Tiggy Mason, 3rd Lois Clarkson, 4th Lois Hurst. The cup for the children's section was won by Zac Cliff. There was a good attendance of 70 people who voted for their favourite entry which was won by Lois Clarkson for her floral display of Peter Rabbit to mark the anniversary of Beatrice Potter. The villagers got together at the Barbon Inn to mark the 10th anniversary of Sandra and John Grainger at the pub. Kevin Taylor was the chef at the barbecue and everyone enjoyed a pleasant evening in the garden. £280 was raised from a raffle for a meal at the Barbon Inn, won by Linda Burton. The money is to be donated to the North Air Ambulance, a charity close to Sandra's heart which is also supported every 1st Sunday of the month at 8.30pm with a quiz at the pub. John and Jules Natlacen hosted a celebration to mark Barbon's entry into the Yorkshire Dales with Bubbles and nibbles. John proposed a toast to new opportunities for local businesses and the area.
