Previous meetings • The sides are meeting for the first time and this is Rijeka's first encounter with French opponents. • Lyon's only previous games against Croatian opposition were a pair of 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage meetings with GNK Dinamo Zagreb; they beat the Modri 2-0 at home and then recorded their biggest ever away win (7-1) in the return fixture despite trailing after 40 minutes in Zagreb. • Croatian clubs are without a victory in their last 11 games against French counterparts in UEFA competition (D3 L8) since NK Slaven Koprivnica recorded a pair of 1-0 wins against SC Bastia in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Match background • A 1-1 draw at home against Vitória SC on matchday two did have one positive for Lyon: Maxime Gonalons' goal ended a barren spell in front of goal in Europe that had encompassed their previous three games. • UEFA Champions League regulars, Lyon made their debut in the UEFA Europa League group stage last season having not played in the competition since 2002/03. They reached the round of 32 with the highest points tally of the season – 16 – but lost out to Tottenham Hotspur FC 3-2 on aggregate. • Rijeka drew 1-1 at home against Real Betis Balompié on matchday two, but will look to avoid a repeat of their matchday one performance as they head for France; Rijeka went down 4-0 at Guimarães, their heaviest defeat in Europe to date and the first time they had conceded four in a continental game since winning 5-4 at Valletta FC in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup qualifying round. • Rijeka made it to their first ever UEFA group stage campaign with an unexpected aggregate victory against VfB Stuttgart in this season's play-offs. Team facts • Lyon, Group I rivals Betis and FC Sheriff are the only sides to have drawn both of their group stage games to date. • Rijeka midfielder Nikola Pokrivač played for Dinamo in both legs of Lyon's only previous meetings with Croatian opposition. Right-back Ivan Tomečak also featured in the Stade de Gerland part of that 2011/12 UEFA Champions League tie. He was not involved in the return fixture, but Rijeka team-mate Mehmed Alispahić was. • Pokrivač is the only Rijeka player with Ligue 1 experience – he represented AS Monaco FC from winter 2008 to the summer of 2009, scoring twice in 32 league games. He featured in a draw and two defeats against Lyon. Coach information • Rémi Garde has spent much of his career with Lyon, taking over as first-team coach in June 2011. As a defensive midfielder, he captained Les Gones and won six caps for France, ending his career with spells at RC Strasbourg and Arsenal FC, who he helped to win the 1997/98 English double. After a spell as a pundit he joined Lyon's coaching staff, and was assistant to Paul Le Guen and Gérard Houllier before taking charge of the club's training centre and subsequently becoming head coach. • Hired in February 2013, Slovenian coach Matjaž Kek led Rijeka to a third-placed finish at the end of last season and into Europe. Famous for taking Slovenia to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, Kek started and ended his playing career as a defender at NK Maribor – where his father played, and now his son – either side of a long spell in Austria. He returned home to Maribor for his first coaching roles, and more recently had a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad. 3 Olympique Lyonnais - HNK Rijeka Thursday 24 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit Stade de Gerland, Lyon Team facts Olympique Lyonnais Formed: 1950 Nickname: Les Gones (The Kids) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Intertoto Cup (1): 1997 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 7 (2008) French Cup: 5 (2012) League Cup: 1 (2001) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: round of 32 2011/12: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2010/11: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2009/10: UEFA Champions League semi-finals 2008/09: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2007/08: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2006/07: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2005/06: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2004/05: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2003/04: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-0: Lyon v FA Red Boys Differdange 17/09/74, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Biggest away win 1-7: GNK Dinamo Zagreb v Lyon 07/12/11, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest home defeat 2-5: Lyon v VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 05/11/74, UEFA Cup second round second leg 0-3 twice, most recently v FC Bayern München 27/04/10, UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0 three times, most recently v Real Madrid CF 18/10/11, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 7-0: Lyon v FA Red Boys Differdange (see above) • Biggest away win 1-4: FA Red Boys Differdange v Lyon 02/10/74, first round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 2-5: Lyon v VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: SV Werder Bremen v Lyon 07/12/99, third round second leg HNK Rijeka Formed: 1946 Nickname: Riječki bijeli (Rijeka Whites) UEFA club competition honours • None 4 Olympique Lyonnais - HNK Rijeka Thursday 24 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit Stade de Gerland, Lyon Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) National cup: 4 (2006) Ten-year record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA competition 2009/10: third qualifying round 2008/09: UEFA Intertoto Cup first round 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA competition 2006/07: first qualifying round 2005/06: second qualifying round 2004/05: second qualifying round 2003/04: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-0: Rijeka v Prestatyn Town FC 18/07/13, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round first leg • Biggest away win 0-3: Prestatyn Town FC v Rijeka 25/07/13, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Rijeka v FK Partizan 04/08/99, UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: Vitória SC v Rijeka 19/09/13, UEFA Europa League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 5-0: Rijeka v Prestatyn Town FC (see above) • Biggest away win 0-3: Prestatyn Town FC v Rijeka (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-2: Rijeka v FC Metalist Kharkiv 30/07/09, third qualifying round first leg 0-1 twice, most recently v RC Celta de Vigo 28/09/00, first round second leg • Heaviest away defeat 4-0: Vitória SC v Rijeka (see above) 5 Olympique Lyonnais - HNK Rijeka Thursday 24 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit Stade de Gerland, Lyon Squad list Olympique Lyonnais Current season All-time UCL Tournament League Tournament UEFA No. Player Nat.
