For 30 years, NAC has recognized and nurtured the potential of every medically fragile child who has come through our doors. Like all children, these children have aspirations for the future. Some aim to go to college; others seek vocational training; and still others want to join the military. They want to enter public service, be teachers, social workers, lawyers, writers, art therapists and graphic designers. Many want to live on their own. Several are already well on their way to realizing these dreams. Most have medical or mental health issues and have been in foster care – and all have achievements once thought impossible. When a person has a disability, the world sees that person differently. It sees limitations rather than challenges to be surmounted; it focuses on medical definitions, ignoring promise, ability and determination. A NAC youth pointed out that “NAC spelled backwards is CAN.” NAC Kids Can has become the guiding principle, not only of the agency and our staff, but of the exceptional children and families being served.

Over the past year, we have continued our work of changing lives – one child at a time. This takes time, quality people and funds to make the difference we know is possible. It is the small as well as the large miracles we see every day that make us believe in the possibility and promise of our children and families. One such miracle has come through Dr. Brian Labow, who is performing a series of hand surgeries on a nine-year-old girl who lost all of her fingers in a fire. This little girl will have fingers again because of Dr. Labow’s gift. Another young woman with spina bifida lived in the hospital until she was five years old and was adopted at NAC. She recently received a college degree and just signed a lease for her own apartment in Brooklyn.

We thank you, our friends and supporters, for your amazing generosity over the years. By becoming part of our family, you have helped to create miracles and change the lives and futures of our children and families.

Through NYC contracted Preventive Services, we work with birth families where there are reports of a risk of abuse or neglect. Through intensive case management, clinical services and comprehensive family support, NAC helps to keep families together, avoiding out-of-home $22.6 MILLION placement. TAXPAYER MONEY Saved IN 2012 BY When a child cannot remain safely at home, NAC steps in with Foster Care preventing high-risk children tailored to meet the extraordinary needs and challenges of medically fragile from going into foster care children, assuring that they are safe and living in homes that are nurturing and loving. NAC works with both birth families and foster parents concurrently to plan for reunification or adoption. As a result, our children spend lesstime in foster care and virtually never age out without a family to call their own. At NAC, we make sure there’s a home – and a heart – for every child. 16 MONTHS Our children are adopted within 3 years – 16 months sooner than citywide averages CHANGING THE FACE OF FOSTER CARE

NAC foster parents go through rigorous evaluation and training before being certified by NAC. Why? Because our children are special and deserve the best home care possible. Whether a child’s goal is to be returned to his birth parents or adopted by her foster parents, NAC’s foster parents provide exceptional support, compassion and love to children who need it most.

NAC FOSTER PARENTS CHANGE LIVES “NAC was there for us. There were moments when we were ready to throw in the towel. But NAC was there to encourage us along the way, to call us, to guide us through. I realize that as we’ve gone through this journey – and we’ve seen this little boy who was so broken and so much in despair and so depressed and had so many issues – I look at him now and realize that there are so many moments we would have missed if we had not persevered. We are so delighted that NAC was the agency that we worked with… We would have never made it without their ongoing encouragement and support on this journey. We’re a big family now and it’s just a joyful experience”

NAC CHILDREN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“Imagine being in foster care for 9 years. There is no escaping your past because your future is already recorded in health statistics – mental and physical alike. You realize that the only way to keep from thinking about the painful memories of childhood is by losing yourself in a book or in school. Your grades of 60’s become 70’s which gradually become 90’s and 100’s. You’re so consumed in your drive for perfection that you begin to forget your past, but it never goes away. You tell yourself that someday soon all this hard work will pay off. You dutifully fill out applications to schools that you never knew existed and you wonder what the outcome will be. This is my story and my journey.”
