Annette Piedra Baquedano - Editor http://www.cubangenclub.org Copyright 2008 ISSN 1937 0288 2 Cuban Church Records and records in Other Archives On July 14, 2008, The Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami held a very special evening session of its summer meeting at The Green Library, located at Florida International University (FIU- University Park). Father Juan Luis Sánchez y Hernández Gamboa, one of the very few contemporary experts in Ibero- Cuban Genealogy, kindly agreed to speak to CGC members and guests on the topic of “Cuban Church Records and Records in Other Archives”. Father Sánchez, or "el Padre", as he is fondly known to his flock of Cuban genealogy aficionados, is an excellent and entertaining lecturer, and has also been kind enough to write several articles and family studies for our journal, Raíces de la Perla. Father Sánchez also played an integral role in the publication of the last books of “Historia de Familias Cubanas”, Volumes VII, VIII and IX, by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén, Conde de San Juan de Jaruco y de Santa Cruz de Mopox. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session where “el Padre” fielded queries on other churches, archives and general questions not covered in his lecture. Father Sánchez presented us with information on a variety of primary and secondary research sources. Some of the secondary resources generally available to us are the books and articles by the aforementioned Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén, better known to most researchers as “el Conde de Jaruco”, and Rafael Nieto y Cortadellas. As for the more important primary sources, Father Sánchez reviewed a large sampling of churches and archives. Concerning the churches, he offered the group data on the older Cuban churches or those of historical significance and their respective diocesan archives. Besides the obvious baptismal, marriage and death certificates or partidas, examples of additional documents in these areas are expedientes de soltería, dispensas de parentesco, ordenes sagradas and capellanías. Secular repositories of information discussed included national and municipal archives where one may secure data from protocolos, testamentos, escribanías and actas del Father Juan Luis Sánchez y Hernández Gamboa ayuntamiento, as well as the office of the city historians and the holding the plaque presented by The CGC. relatively recent civil registries. Also discussed were military archives and university archives holding student records. Ground or air surveys or both were conducted at all identified potential areas and locations previously reported in the literature. We define the current distribution as 10 separate localities in six provinces and the estimated total number of cranes at 526 individuals for the country. Two populations reported in the literature were no longer present and two localities not previously reported were discovered. The actual number of cranes at two localities was not possible to evaluate due to their rarity. Only four areas (Isle of Youth, Matanzas, Ciego de Avila, and Sancti Spiritus) each support more than 70 cranes.
