    2016 Ohio primary election update and summary March 16, 2016 On Tuesday, March 15, Ohioans cast ballots in the 2016 primary election. While the 2016 presidential election has been capturing most of the media spotlight, several other races of significance were contested. Below, we have compiled results of some races of particular note and will continue to closely watch these races and others as we move toward the general election in November. (A full list of results from the Ohio House of Representative and Ohio Senate races with primary contests is also included below.) As results continue to come in, please be advised that some of the information below may be incomplete. We will continue to update this publication over the next few days as the boards of elections finalize results. We hope this overview is helpful as we move into the next phase of the campaign season. U.S. President Governor John Kasich won the Ohio Republican primary race for president with 46 percent of the vote, beating out Donald Trump (36 percent), Ted Cruz (13 percent) and Marco Rubio (2 percent). In May 2015, the Ohio General Assembly moved Ohio’s primary to allow Ohio to become a “winner takes all” state in the Republican primary race. Under party rules, if Ohio held its primary before March 15 (as it would have under previous law), delegates would be elected by congressional district and could go to multiple Republican presidential hopefuls. In September 2015, the Ohio Republican Party formally designated the primary election as a winner takes all contest to allow the top statewide vote-getter to take all 66 of Ohio’s Republican presidential delegates.

    John Kasich Elected Next Ohio Governor John Kasich has been elected the 69th Governor for the State of Ohio. Governor-elect Kasich and Mary Taylor, the Lieutenant Governor, will be sworn-in in January 2011. Governor-Elect Kasich will take office on Monday, January 10, 2011. Governor - Elect Kasich has announced that Tim Keen will be appointed Director of the Office of Budget and Management; Beth Hansen will be his Chief of Staff; and Wayne Struble will be the Director of Policy in the Governor’s Office. O’Connor will become first female Supreme Court Chief Justice Current Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor will become the Chief Justice of the Court. Justice O’Connor beat Governor Strickland’s appointee Eric Brown in the election. Also winning their elections were Justice Judith Lanzinger and Justice Paul Pfeiffer. Governor Strickland is expected to appoint a new justice to fulfill the unexpired term of Justice O’Connor after she assumes the role of Chief Justice. She will assume her role on January 1, 2011. Many believe defeated Attorney General Richard Cordray, Eric Brown and Mary Jane Trapp will be considered for the appointment. Portman Wins U. S. Senate Race Republican Rob Portman defeated Lt. Governor Lee Fisher in the United State Senate race. Portman will replace Senator George Voinovich, who is retiring. Democrats Lose in Congressional Races Five incumbent Democrat members of Congress lost their seats to Republicans: Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy lost to Steve Stivers (OH-15); Congressman Steve Driehaus lost to Steve Chabot (OH-1); Congressman John Boccieri lost to Jim Renacci (OH-16); Congressman Zack Space lost to Senator Bob Gibbs (OH-18); and Congressman Charlie Wilson lost to Bill Johnson (OH-6).

    2016 post-general election update November 9, 2016 On November 8, 2016, Ohio voters cast ballots in the 2016 general election. Federal offices — including President, U.S. Senate and Ohio Supreme Court — were all on the ballot, as were seats in the Ohio General Assembly. Many counties in Ohio and around the country reported record-breaking early voter turnout, adding to the historic nature of this election. Here is Bricker & Eckler’s overview of the highlights from the general election and details on races of particular interest. Presidential After quite an unusual election cycle, Donald J. Trump and his running mate Mike Pence clinched the presidential race after claiming many of the country’s swing states, including Ohio, which was won by over 400,000 votes. In a year with record high absentee ballots, the Trump/Pence campaign carried counties that haven’t been won by Republicans since the 1920s. President- elect Trump won 52.05 percent of the Ohio vote and Hillary Clinton won 43.51 percent of the vote. U.S. Senate Incumbent Senator Rob Portman (R) prevailed over former Governor Ted Strickland (D) in the race for U.S. Senate in Ohio, winning 58.32 percent to 36.92 percent. Senator Portman took a significant lead in the polls over Strickland in the weeks leading up to the election. Portman and Strickland also faced Joseph DeMare of the Green Party and Thomas William Connors and Scott Rupert of the Independent Party. Each received 1.62 percent, 1.72 percent and 1.43 percent of the vote, respectively.
