En particular, comparo la noción de “conjunto” emanada de la teoría axiomática de conjuntos, con la noción de “plura- lidad” que se encuentra detrás de este nuevo sistema. Mi conclusión es que los dos son completamente diferentes en su alcance y sus límites, y que la diferencia proviene de las diferentes motivaciones que han dado lugar a cada uno. Mientras que la teoría de conjuntos es una teoría genuinamente matemática, que tiene el interés matemático como ingrediente principal, la lógica plural ha aparecido como respuesta a considera- ciones lingüísticas, relacionadas con la estructura lógica de los enunciados plurales del inglés y el resto de los lenguajes naturales. Chapter 1 Logic and Set Theory To criticize mathematics for its abstraction is to miss the point entirely. Abstraction is what makes mathematics work. If you concentrate too closely on too limited an application of a mathematical idea, you rob the mathematician of his most important tools: analogy, generality, and simplicity. – Ian Stewart Does God play dice? The mathematics of chaos In mathematics, a proof is a demonstration that, assuming certain axioms, some statement is necessarily true. That is, a proof is a logical argument, not an empir- ical one. One must demonstrate that a proposition is true in all cases before it is considered a theorem of mathematics. An unproven proposition for which there is some sort of empirical evidence is known as a conjecture. Mathematical logic is the framework upon which rigorous proofs are built. It is the study of the principles and criteria of valid inference and demonstrations. Logicians have analyzed set theory in great details, formulating a collection of axioms that affords a broad enough and strong enough foundation to mathematical reasoning. The standard form of axiomatic set theory is denoted ZFC and it consists of the Zermelo-Fraenkel (ZF) axioms combined with the axiom of choice (C). Each of the axioms included in this theory expresses a property of sets that is widely accepted by mathematicians. It is unfortunately true that careless use of set theory can lead to contradictions. Avoiding such contradictions was one of the original motivations for the axiomatization of set theory. 1 2 CHAPTER 1. A part of inves- tigation concerns its formal framework – probability logics [1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 13, 15, 17–20]. Probability languages are obtained by adding probability operators of the form (in our notation) P¿s to classical languages. The probability logics allow making formulas such as P¿s , with the intended meaning “the probability of truthfulness of is greater than or equal to s”. Probability models similar to Kripke models are used to give semantics to the probability formulas so that interpreted formulas are either true or false. -

Ripley 2015 Abstract Undergraduate music students often experience a high learning curve when they first encounter pitch-class set theory, an analytical system very different from those they have studied previously. Students sometimes find the abstractions of integer notation and the mathematical orientation of set theory foreign or even frightening (Kleppinger 2010), and the dissonance of the atonal repertoire studied often engenders their resistance (Root 2010). Pedagogical games can help mitigate student resistance and trepidation. Table games like Bingo (Gillespie 2000) and Poker (Gingerich 1991) have been adapted to suit college-level classes in music theory. Familiar television shows provide another source of pedagogical games; for example, Berry (2008; 2015) adapts the show Survivor to frame a unit on theory fundamentals. However, none of these pedagogical games engage pitch- class set theory during a multi-week unit of study. In my dissertation, I adapt the show Survivor to frame a four-week unit on pitch- class set theory (introducing topics ranging from pitch-class sets to twelve-tone rows) during a sophomore-level theory course. As on the show, students of different achievement levels work together in small groups, or “tribes,” to complete worksheets called “challenges”; however, in an important modification to the structure of the show, no students are voted out of their tribes. -

I introduce an approach for automated reasoning in first or- der set theories that are not finitely axiomatizable, such as ZFC, and describe its implementation alongside the automated theorem proving software E. I then compare the results of proof search in the class based set theory NBG with those of ZFC. Keywords: ZFC · ATP · E. 1 Introduction Historically, automated reasoning in first order set theories has faced a fun- damental problem in the axiomatizations. Some theories such as ZFC widely considered as candidates for the foundations of mathematics are not finitely axiomatizable. Axiom schemas such as the schema of comprehension and the schema of replacement in ZFC are infinite, and so cannot be entirely incorpo- rated in to the prover at the beginning of a proof search. Indeed, there is no finite axiomatization of ZFC [1]. As a result, when reasoning about sufficiently strong set theories that could no longer be considered naive, some have taken the alternative approach of using extensions of ZFC that admit objects such as proper classes as first order objects, but this is not without its problems for the individual interested in proving set-theoretic propositions. As an alternative, I have programmed an extension to the automated the- orem prover E [2] that generates instances of parameter free replacement and comprehension from well formuled formulas of ZFC that are passed to it, when eligible, and adds them to the proof state while the prover is running. -

Chapter One Pitch-Class Set Theory: An Overture A Tale of Two Continents In the late afternoon of October 24, 1999, about one hundred people were gathered in a large rehearsal room of the Rotterdam Conservatory. They were listening to a discussion between representatives of nine European countries about the teaching of music theory and music analysis. It was the third day of the Fourth European Music Analysis Conference.1 Most participants in the conference (which included a number of music theorists from Canada and the United States) had been looking forward to this session: meetings about the various analytical traditions and pedagogical practices in Europe were rare, and a broad survey of teaching methods was lacking. Most felt a need for information from beyond their country’s borders. This need was reinforced by the mobility of music students and the resulting hodgepodge of nationalities at renowned conservatories and music schools. Moreover, the European systems of higher education were on the threshold of a harmoni- zation operation. Earlier that year, on June 19, the governments of 29 coun- tries had ratifi ed the “Bologna Declaration,” a document that envisaged a unifi ed European area for higher education. Its enforcement added to the urgency of the meeting in Rotterdam. However, this meeting would not be remembered for the unusually broad rep- resentation of nationalities or for its political timeliness. What would be remem- bered was an incident which took place shortly after the audience had been invited to join in the discussion. Somebody had raised a question about classroom analysis of twentieth-century music, a recurring topic among music theory teach- ers: whereas the music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lent itself to general analytical methodologies, the extremely diverse repertoire of the twen- tieth century seemed only to invite ad hoc approaches; how could the analysis of 1. -

Re- cently, Harrison (1965) solved this problem, but without considering automata with initial and final states. With the aid of the Power Group Enumeration Theorem (Harary and Palmer, 1965, 1966) the entire problem can be handled routinely. The method involves a confrontation of several different operations on permutation groups. To set the stage, we enumerate ordered pairs of functions with respect to the product of two power groups. Finite automata are then concisely defined as certain ordered pah's of functions. We review the enumeration of automata in the natural setting of the power group, and then extend this result to enumerate automata with initial and terminal states. I. Introduction The Axiom of Choice states that for any family of nonempty disjoint sets, there exists a set that consists of exactly one element from each element of the family. It seems strange at first that such an innocuous sounding idea can be so powerful and controversial, but it certainly is both. To understand why, we will start by looking at some statements that are equivalent to the axiom of choice. Many of these equivalences are very useful, and we devote much time to one, namely, that every vector space has a basis. We go on from there to see a few more applications of the Axiom of Choice and its equivalents, and finish by looking at some of the reasons why the Axiom of Choice is so controversial. -
