WHAT TO DO July 12 - 25, 2005 Glacier Point All activities pending opening of the road

Ranger Walks Join a ranger for a walk to discover Yosemite's unique, tucked-away places. See a pioneer cabin near a beautiful meadow, explore the red fir forest in the Canadian life zone, or hike to a seldom-seen waterfall. See Scheduled Events pages for dates and times.

Evening Programs Meet a ranger to enjoy the lengthening shadows in Yosemite Valley and the alpenglow on the Sierra high country, or come for the sunset and stay for the moonrise. On Thursday evenings, photographers will not want to miss the Alpenglow Photo Shoot, led by representatives from Kodak (in association with Delaware North Companies). Glacier Point is one of the best places in Yosemite to see the stars. Stargazing programs are offered on the weekends starting at 8:30 p.m.

WHERE TO GO Night Sky Information July 13 Jupiter and Moon travel the sky together tonight. Mercury is still visible after sunset under Venus and very low on western horizon. July 17 At about 9:00 p.m. Moon will occult (pass in front of) the bright red star Antares in the fish hook shaped constellation Scorpius the Scorpion. Antares, 300 times the size or our sun (Sol) measures 500 million miles across, yet will appears tiny next to the 2,000 mile diameter Moon because Antares is so much farther away. It takes light only 1.3 seconds to travel from Moon to Earth, where the light arriving from Antares has been traveling for 600 years! July 21 Tonight Moon is full and will be the largest of the year. Watch it rise, unbelievably huge, from behind a distant mountain and enjoy the optical illusion caused by brain/eye miscommunication. Watch as Moon rises higher, General Park is it really getting smaller? Compare with your thumb outstretched. A full moon will always be about the size of Information your thumbnail. July 22 Before Moon rises in the east, look to the west for Venus and the bight Blue-white star Regulus in the constel- lation Leo the Lion. Although Venus will not occult Regulus BICYCLE RENTAL it will come very close. Emergency 911 Daily, weather permitting, with hourly and Fire – Police – Medical Emergency: daily rates.
