Dear Friends in Rugby

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to Allianz Park. This venue received a unanimous thumbs up from the players who competed last year.

Before I address today’s finalists, may I ask you to join me in sending all our positive thoughts to Will Brian. Will was taken to hospital following Graham Walker the Datchworth v Fullerians semi-final. He was Hertfordshire RFU President suffering from a head injury which necessitated surgery and treatment. As I write, Will is in a rehabilitation centre, bulking up while he waits for a second operation.

I understand the prognosis is positive, and having seen Will play, I know he has the mind-set to tackle whatever this throws at him. Our collective love goes to all his family and friends who will be taking every step of his journey alongside him.

I will ask for players and spectators to give a minutes applause before the Datchworth v Stevenage Final.

And so, to the finals. The beauty of Cup Rugby. League form counts for nothing in this winner take all environment. How the Gods of our game have conspired to give each final a local rivalry. From the south, OVs take on Watford, the north gives us Datchworth and Stevenage, while the east pits Bishops Stortford against Hertford. At the start of this competition, you would have got long odds against that mouth watering line up.

All is set for a glorious day, a fitting tribute to the many years of service given selflessly by our Chair of Competitions who stands down this summer. Mr. Jon Clapham, Clappers, be proud of your endeavours, you have served with honour and distinction. We wish you well Jon and look forward to catching up, probably on the golf course.

Enjoy your day, applaud good play, and encourage the match officials in the true manner of our sport.
