PASTORAL STAFF "God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every Reverend Edward J. Quinlan name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and Pastor on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9 - 11) Reverend Matthew E. Cannon TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Parochial Vicar In chapter 14 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to people Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel gathered at the table about the difficulties of following him. This group of Permanent Deacon people is suspicious about Jesus, looking to catch him doing something wrong. Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although Deacon Jerome T. Foerster there is a right way to be a disciple and enter into the kingdom of his Permanent Deacon Father, it is a difficult path to follow. Many, even some of the guests at the table, reject the invitation. So Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks MASSES to them of discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a Weekends: choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus Saturday Vigil5:00 p.m. describes “hating” one's father and mother, he is not talking about Sunday8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life— Weekdays: must come second. In Matthew's version of this story (Matthew 10:37), (Weekday schedule subject to Jesus refers not to “hating” father or mother, but to loving them change - please see inside bulletin) more than Jesus. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. easy. It means to bear one's own cross. These difficult sayings of Jesus Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. are followed by two brief parables (a person constructing a tower and a Saturday8:30 a.m. king marching into battle) that make an obvious point—don't start what

you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can CONFESSIONS Saturday9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. everything else. - Excerpted from Sunday Connection, Loyola Pres s
