CUBA: a Whole New Ballgame 2 A Whole New Ballgame Fall 2015 3 CUBA A Whole New Ballgame By Valerie Wirtschafter with Julia Sweig uring the early 20th century, the hegemony of the United States on the island shaped diplomatic Drelations between the U.S. and Cuba — one factor that drove Fidel Castro’s revolutionary fervor and fueled the Cuban Revolution. During the Cold War, mutual hostility and distrust defined relations. Cuba served as one of the main theaters in which the U.S. and the Soviet Union waged many of their power struggles. But on December 17, 2014, something astonishing happened: the governments of the United States and Cuba decided to reshape this fraught history and chart a new course in diplomatic relations, one built on dialogue and compromise, as well as a shadow of mutual understanding. In an obviously choreographed effort, at 12:01 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, both Raúl Castro and Barack Obama took the podium to announce a historic thaw in bilateral relations. In a vow to “cut loose the shackles of the past,” President Obama announced a new approach to relations between the two countries, including a relaxation of restrictions on remittances to the island, increased travel and banking opportunities, and a restoration of diplomatic relations, among other changes. Raúl Castro, in turn, declared that the thaw would allow Cuba to embark “on the task of updating our economic model in order to build a prosperous and sustainable socialism.” The Cuban government committed to increasing access to the Internet and released 53 political prisoners. As the crux of the deal, both agreed to a swap of the remaining three of the “Cuban Five,” intelligence officers held in U.S. prisons since 1998, for a U.S. agent named Rolando Sarraff Trujillo and Alan Gross, a United States Agency Photo from the U.S. Department of State. the U.S. Photo from for International Development (USAID) subcontractor. U.S. Senators Meet with Alan Gross Havana, November 13 (RHC) –- Two U.S. Senators met on Tuesday morning with Alan Gross, a U.S. contractor held in Cuba for five years on charges of subversive actions against the government in Havana. According to CBS News, Senator Jeff Flake and Tom Udall met with Gross for two hours. They said the meeting was just one reason for their visit and they declined to mention what they had talked about. The senators said they have no information on Gross’ possible release. He has been held in a Cuban prison for five years already and still has ten years remaining on his sentence. In 2009, Gross went to Cuba posing as a tourist. But that was a front for fulfilling a $600,000 contract to smuggle communications equipment into the island. The plan was to set up Internet hot spots as part of a U.S. government-funded program. Cuba has offered to exchange him for the three members of the Cuban Five that remain imprisoned in the U.S., but so far, Washington has shown no interest in the deal. The possibility of a swap deal was also mentioned by a recent editorial in The New York Times, while other individuals have stressed the positiveness of such a move. Among them is Judy Gross, wife of Alan Gross, who said she is heartened by the U.S. government’s exchange of Taliban prisoners for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl not so long ago. She said: “My thought is if they can do that, if they can follow through with something that complicated, surely they can figure out something they can do to get Alan home.” https://www.radiohc.cu/index.php/en/noticias/nacionales/39138-us-senators-meet-with-alan-gross Radio Habana Cuba.

Take, for instance: Kennedy, Jackie or Roosevelt, Eleanor. The public knows them primarily from the complicated reference point of their unfaithful, in-the-spotlight political husbands, rather than from their own individual achievements. In the case of Clinton, Hillary, it is a name we are all too familiar within recent U.S. political history; a name who lost the 42nd presidential election in 2017 to one of the most nefarious characters in history. But Lucas Hnath’s play Hillary and Clinton is not that story. This one took place what seems like eons before, in 2008, and focuses on the first serious woman presidential candidate in the United States. However, this play—having its area premiere by Second Thought Theatre—is not about history; it is herstory told from an 1/4 intimate point of view on one winter’s night, on a Sunday evening, January 2008 in a New Hampshire hotel room during the primaries. In an unexpected win, Hillary sweeps the state against her then opponent, The Other Guy (Barack Obama), who would later win the presidential election. As nights go, this was a fateful one followed by defeat, a defeat that some say (and the play suggests) was based on her inability to break from the image of that other Clinton, her husband, who has marked her existence, one which includes a very public shame for all concerned named Monica.

  • U.S. Democracy, the Cuban Five and the ANPP by Arnold August, April 2012
U.S. Democracy, the Cuban Five and the ANPP By Arnold August, April 2012 The U.S. has its definition of democracy. It is promoted for other countries that do not adhere to the U.S. as being the leader of the world. Cuba is one of those countries. For those countries that are allies or friendly to the U.S., Washington does not insist on its model. Since 1959, Cuba’s defence of its sovereignty and right to self-determination is perhaps the most consistent and long-lasting resistance to U.S. domination of any country in the contemporary world. U.S. democracy promotion for Cuba is far from being peaceful. The U.S. political and judicial system is not democratic when it comes to many issues as my book details in Chapter 2. One of the most flagrant violations of human rights in the entire history of the U.S. justice system is the case of the Cuban Five. Who are Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, to whom I have dedicated my book? It is necessary to go back into history to get to the roots of the Cuban Five. The U.S., as reviewed in Chapter 5, has used every means, including violence, in order to try to force regime change in Cuba, with “democracy promotion” being one of the signposts. Since 1960, there have been approximately 800 terrorist acts inside Cuba, resulting in 3,478 people being killed and 2,099 injured. “It is hard not to find someone who doesn’t have a story to tell of a relative or friend who has been a victim of terrorism.”1 According to the late U.S.

  • Cuba Releases Pro-Life Activist, but Sentences U.S. Contractor to Prison
Cuba releases pro-life activist, but sentences U.S. contractor to prison WASHINGTON – Cuba released a renowned pro-life activist and political dissident, but sent mixed signals the next day when courts sentenced an American contractor to 15 years in prison for taking telecommunications equipment into the country. Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, 49, an activist first jailed in 1999 for denouncing Fidel Castro’s abortion policies, was released from prison March 11, as announced by the Archdiocese of Havana, which has negotiated the release of 52 political prisoners since last summer. He was also among a group of 75 activists jailed in anti- government protests in 2003. Upon his release, he told EFE, the Spanish news agency, that he intends to stay in Cuba. “I’ve always lived in Cuba and I am of Cuba,” he said. “I haven’t ever harmed anybody, just given love, much love, and because of that I was harmed by the government.” In a teleconference from Havana March 14, Biscet signaled his intention to remain critical of the government, calling the Castro regime a “total dictatorship” that fears informed citizens. He called on fellow Cubans to “act moderately, impartially, and with firmness in the defense of our principles without falling into sectarian extremism, but always intransigent in regards to liberty, justice, and democracy for Cuba.” Political analyst and blogger Alberto de la Cruz told Catholic News Service, “Oscar Biscet is Cuba’s Nelson Mandela. He has the charisma to lead a democracy movement.” De la Cruz, who helped organize the teleconference, described Biscet as “exhausted but in good spirits.

  • Combining Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics to Analyse Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches
Simon Berg Changing America: Combining Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics to Analyse Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches Simon Berg Pro gradu-avhandling i engelska språket och litteraturen Handledare: Brita Wårvik Fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi Åbo Akademi 2018 Simon Berg Åbo Akademi University – The Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology Abstract for Master’s Thesis Subject: English Language and Literature Author: Simon Berg Titel: Changing America: Combining Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics to Analyse Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches Supervisor: Brita Wårvik The aim of the study was to learn if there is any truth to the claims that Donald Trump has caused a new, harsher political discourse. This was done by analysing the presidential nomination acceptance speeches by Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. By comparing the four speeches it is possible to determinate if the speech by Trump stands out, either when it comes to content or how he speaks. The speeches are the first public appearance by the candidates after being elected as candidates for their party, this means that they are the end of the primary election and the beginning of the Presidential election campaign. The study is primarily conducted using critical discourse analysis. Due to the inherent flaws of critical discourse analysis, in that it lacks a dedicated method of gathering data and might therefore allow for a subjective interpretation of the findings, corpus linguistics has been introduced as a supporting element. This also brings another dimension to the research. The study functions as an experiment in combining critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, to see if the two can be combined and whether the addition of corpus linguistics negates the characteristic problems of critical discourse analysis.

Even though Castro is no longer the president of Cuba, the authoritarian and communist state remains in power in the hands of his brother, Raúl. As the hegemon of the Western Hemisphere, the United States has labored to combat this repressive force that threatens democracy only ninety miles from its shores. Nevertheless, U.S. efforts to destabilize the Castro regime in Cuba have not been effective. In this paper, I analyze the U.S. embargo against Cuba and the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program, both of which are U.S. government initiatives intended to weaken the Cuban government. Through a comparison of U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia, China, and Cuba I find that the United States’ foreign policy is guided more by domestic pressure, strategic decisions, and economics than human rights or ideology.

Once considered enemies, the United States and Cuba have reestablished diplomatic relations. The reestablishment of relationships is a surprise to many politicians because Cuba has not made the necessary changes to end the trade embargo put into place by the 1996 Helms Burton act. The majority of the friction in ending the embargo is from the Republican Party.

  • Cuba: US Policy and Issues for the 113Th Congress
Cuba: U.S. Policy and Issues for the 113th Congress -name redacted- Specialist in Latin American Affairs December 29, 2014 Congressional Research Service 7-.... www.crs.gov R43024 Cuba: U.S. Policy and Issues for Congress Summary Cuba remains a one-party communist state with a poor record on human rights. The country’s political succession in 2006 from the long-ruling Fidel Castro to his brother Raúl was characterized by a remarkable degree of stability. In February 2013, Castro was reappointed to a second five-year term as President (until 2018, when he would be 86 years old), and selected 52- year old former Education Minister Miguel Díaz-Canel as his First Vice President, making him the official successor in the event that Castro cannot serve out his term. Raúl Castro has implemented a number of gradual economic policy changes over the past several years, including an expansion of self-employment. A party congress held in April 2011 laid out numerous economic goals that, if implemented, could significantly alter Cuba’s state-dominated economic model. Few observers, however, expect the government to ease its tight control over the political system. While the government reduced the number of political prisoners in 2010-2011, the number increased in 2012; moreover, short-term detentions and harassment have increased significantly over the past several years. U.S. Policy Congress has played an active role in shaping policy toward Cuba, including the enactment of legislation strengthening and at times easing various U.S. economic sanctions. While U.S. policy has consisted largely of isolating Cuba through economic sanctions, a second policy component has consisted of support measures for the Cuban people, including U.S.
