Fingers crossed. - Talentsauce This just keeps getting more interesting, the entire unfolding of events. Nice one there. – Timayin Folorunsho Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Godddddddddddd!!! – Busayo 4 Dear Future Husband ‘Tomi Adesina 1 The first rule of a Monday morning, especially when you stay in Lagos, is ‘DON’T WAKE UP LATE!’ Tola Matthews had never fallen short of this rule, except for today. She brushed her leg against the side table as she made for the front door. I giggled. Tola stopped to eyeball me. She rolled her eyes. “Kimberly, the only reason I am not going to talk back at you is that I feel pity for you” she started. Tola had a knack for showing off her status as a Broker. “You don’t have a job. All you do is sit and watch TV, I have no problems with that, but don’t you think you should look for a real job that takes you out early?” She said looking at the wall clock. She smiled at me. It had mockery written all over it. I snickered. “You are not happy. And the money in the Firm isn’t yours, you work for Mr. Asolo. One day, they’ll take that Range Rover back.” I replied, with a grin. “I bought that with my money!” she hissed and stepped out. I wasn’t done yet. “Kentucky on your way back, please.” “Did I hear you right?” Tola replied, tucking her head back in. I smiled. “You are a salary earner, aren’t you?” I focused my attention back on the flat screen TV. It is a big deal when you have nothing to do in Lagos. I am Kimberly Bankole, popularly called ‘Kim Banks’ by my friends, graduated with a First Class from the prestigious University of Lagos with a degree in Economics. So much for my First Class Degree! I had sought to live on my own and when my best friends, Tola and Ini presented the opportunity, I jumped at it. Tola works in the Real Estate Business and due to her hard work, she was gaining heights every day, and she currently occupies a top position in Asolo Real Estate Firm. Tola paid her way through the university as she lost her father quite early. She indulged in business all through her 5 Dear Future Husband ‘Tomi Adesina stay on the campus, and coupled with the monthly bursaries from the government, she could fend for her academics. Ini Obong is a model. She recently just got herself a billboard job for a beauty soap. Ini worked when the opportunity arose, and she earned fat for it. Her career was fast-rising and her manager, Marcus, works tirelessly to get her jobs. Ini cherished her beauty sleep and she was still having it. But with Kimberly in the house, who would get a beauty sleep?” I drew the curtains and let the sun rays in. “Wake up!” Ini rolled over and covered her face with the pillow. “Ini, it’s almost 9 in the morning. The roads would be free, why are you still in bed?” Ini snarled. “I don’t have to look for jobs, they hunt me! Now get out of here.” She said, punching the pillow. “Really, Ini? You should be awake.” I said, pulling the duvet. Ini punched her pillow heavily and sat up. “I need my beauty sleep!” she emphasized. “The party lasted late into the night and I am tired. You should be the one on the road, go get a job.” I shot at her. “How many times do I have to tell you that I have a job? I am a freelance writer!” Ini chuckled. “Ah…yes, I remember, whatever that is, honey.” She said, and slumped back in bed. I rolled my eyes and left for the kitchen. I work as a freelance writer from home, I write articles on the internet and if a column job comes by, my friend, Ben passes it to me. Although, I haven’t gotten any yet, I have his promises to cling on to. I am from a popular Lagos family. I am Professor and Professor Mrs. Bankole’s only child. Wondering why I am not gainfully employed? I turned down several opportunities to work for my Father and his well-established friends. Economics had never really been my dream; I lived it for my parents who are successful economists.

Her father, the Reverend George Austen, held the two rectories of Deane and Steventon in Hampshire, having been appointed to them by the favor of a cousin and an uncle. He thus belonged to the gentry, and it seems likely that he entered the church more as a profession than a vocation.

  • Dear Future Husband’: Young People’S Critical Exploration of Gender and Sexuality in Pop Music Videos
Networking Knowledge 10(3)Sex and Sexualities in Popular Culture (Oct. 2017) ‘Dear Future Husband’: young people’s critical exploration of gender and sexuality in pop music videos ELLY SCRINE, University of Melbourne ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore how young people can critically engage with music videos to explore dominant constructions of gender and sexuality. As the primary consumers of popular music and music videos, adolescents are also a group who exist in a unique sociocultural space, where both misogyny and feminism are present in their highly media-driven lives. This study used focus group workshops with young people in high school to generate qualitative data based on the participants’ discussion and interpretations of gender and sexuality in two music videos. Seven groups of young people aged 14 – 16 analysed two popular music videos and reflected particularly upon discourses of expected femininity and female sexuality. Discussion elucidated insightful analysis around gendered subjectivity, and presented three complex and opposing themes, which are explored in detail. A cohesive thread emerged in the data in which young people demonstrated their capacity to identify hegemonic gender constructs, while also relying on these constructs to read and police the women shown in the music videos. KEYWORDS Gender, sexuality, popular music, music videos, adolescents Gender in young people’s current lives Young people establish their identity and independence through the broader political, cultural and socio-structural contexts in which they operate. High schools exist not only as a physical place in which adolescents spend a significant amount of their time, but also a socio-political sphere where the performance, negotiation and reproduction of gender norms are enacted through overt and covert structures (Blakemore, Berenbaum, & Liben 2013, 365).

  • Domestic Violence and the Implications For
ABSTRACT WITHIN AND BEYOND THE SCHOOL WALLS: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOLING by Elizabeth Joan Cardenas Domestic violence complemented by gendered inequalities impact both women and children. Research shows that although domestic violence is a global, prevalent social phenomenon which transcends class, race, and educational levels, this social monster and its impact have been relatively ignored in the realm of schooling. In this study, I problematize the issue of domestic violence by interrogating: How do the family and folk culture educate/miseducate children and adults about their gendered roles and responsibilities? How do schools reinforce the education/miseducation of these gendered roles and responsibilities? What can we learn about the effects of this education/ miseducation? What can schools do differently to bridge the gap between children and families who are exposed to domestic violence? This study introduces CAREPraxis as a possible framework for schools to implement an emancipatory reform. CAREPraxis calls for a re/definition of school leadership, home-school relationship, community involvement, and curriculum in order to improve the deficiency of relationality and criticality skills identified from the data sources on the issue of domestic violence. This study is etiological as well as political and is grounded in critical theory, particularly postcolonial theory and black women’s discourses, to explore the themes of representation, power, resistance, agency and identity. I interviewed six women, between ages 20 and 50, who were living or have lived in abusive relationships for two or more years. The two major questions asked were: What was it like when you were growing up? What have been your experiences with your intimate male partner with whom you live/lived.

  • The Winner Stands Alone
The Winner Stands Alone Paulo Coelho Translated from the Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Amen. For N.D.P., who came down to Earth in order to show us the path of the Good Fight And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. luke 12 : 22–27 Whoever you are holding me now in hand, Without one thing all will be useless, I give you fair warning before you attempt me further, I am not what you supposed, but far different. Who is he that would become my follower? Who would sign himself a candidate for my affections? The way is suspicious, the result uncertain, perhaps destructive, You would have to give up all else, I alone would expect to be your sole and exclusive standard, Your novitiate would even then be long and exhausting, The whole past theory of your life and all conformity to the lives around you would have to be abandon’ d, Therefore release me now before troubling yourself any further, let go your hand from my shoulders, Put me down and depart on your way.

TO COVER OUR DAUGHTERS: A MODERN CHASTITY RITUAL IN EVANGELICAL AMERICA by HOLLY ADAMS PHILLIPS Under the Direction of Kathryn McClymond ABSTRACT Over the last ten years, a newly created ritual called a Purity Ball has become increasingly popular in American evangelical communities. In much of the present literature, Purity Balls are assumed solely to address a daughter’s emerging sexuality in a ritual designed to counteract evolving American norms on sexuality; however, the ritual may carry additional latent sociological functions. While experienced explicitly by the individual participants as a celebration of father/daughter relationships and a means to address evolutionary
