The Pilgrims brought the Township form of government to America in 1620. This form of government spread across New England to the Rocky Mountains. Townships are found in 22 states. In Ohio, Townships predate state government. Townships in Ohio were either five or six miles square with the exception of lands in the Virginia Military District. With land grants by Ohio, some sections were set aside for support of schools and religious institutions. Currently 35% of Ohio residents live in townships. In 1804, Townships were established as the basic form of local government. Township are constitutional in nature and cannot legislate or pass laws. Townships are governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd numbered years to a four year term beginning on the following January 1st. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected Fiscal Officer, who serves a four year term beginning on April 1st of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. RG 2015 4 PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP PROFILE Established: Perrysburg Township is the oldest township in Wood County, “established May 8, 1823, when the commissioners set apart all of the original territory of Waynesfield, within the organized county of Wood, under the new name, and ordered the election to be held at the house of Samuel Spafford, on June 19, 1823.” Leeson, M. The large residential base is offset by generational farms as well as commercial and industrial parks. Total Land Size: Perrysburg Township originally encompassed 49 square miles and was the largest geographical township in Ohio. The Perrysburg Township EMS Department is charged with providing acute prehospital medical care to individuals. Through mutual aid agreements and automatic aid, the department also provides protection on an as-needed basis to other municipalities throughout Wood County.
