The Pilgrims brought the Township form of government to America in 1620. This form of government spread across New England to the Rocky Mountains. Townships are found in 22 states. In Ohio, Townships predate state government. Townships in Ohio were either five or six miles square with the exception of lands in the Virginia Military District. With land grants by Ohio, some sections were set aside for support of schools and religious institutions. Currently 35% of Ohio residents live in townships. In 1804, Townships were established as the basic form of local government. Township are constitutional in nature and cannot legislate or pass laws. Townships are governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd numbered years to a four year term beginning on the following January 1st. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected Fiscal Officer, who serves a four year term beginning on April 1st of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Current Elected Officials: Gary Britten, Trustee: Term ends December 2017 Shirley Haar, Fiscal Officer: Term ends April 2016 Craig LaHote, Trustee: Term ends December 2015 Robert Mack, Trustee: Term ends December 2017 Perrysburg Township became a Limited Home Rule Township after the issue was approved by voters in the November 2008 election. Authority Granted to Home Rule Townships through the Ohio Revised Code May provide water and sewer services by contract (504.18) May hire an independent engineer for road projects (5543.01, 5573.01) May increase debt limitation an additional ½% by the trustees, and an additional 5% with the approval of the voters (133.09) May adopt local building code and standards (504.13) May exercise all powers of local self-government within the unincorporated portion of the township (504.04) May adopt and enforce within the unincorporated area of the township local police, sanitary, and other similar regulations that are not in conflict with general laws. (504.04) May adopt and enforce within the unincorporated area of the township any resolution of a type described in Section 503.52 or 503.60 of the Revised Code relating to sexually oriented businesses and residency regulation of sex or child victim offenders May adopt broader zoning authority allowing for welfare of the community based zoning. RG 2015 4 PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP PROFILE Established: Perrysburg Township is the oldest township in Wood County, “established May 8, 1823, when the commissioners set apart all of the original territory of Waynesfield, within the organized county of Wood, under the new name, and ordered the election to be held at the house of Samuel Spafford, on June 19, 1823.” Leeson, M. Beers & Co. Location: Perrysburg Township is located in northern Wood County, surrounding the crossroads of I-75 and the Ohio Turnpike, 10 miles south of the City of Toledo, Ohio. The large residential base is offset by generational farms as well as commercial and industrial parks. RESIDENTS: Please remember to specify you live in Perrysburg Township the next time you renew your license plates. A portion of this tax money is returned to the Township and used to repair and maintain our roads. Total Land Size: Perrysburg Township originally encompassed 49 square miles and was the largest geographical township in Ohio. Over time, annexation has reduced the size to 36 square miles Population: 12,512* Largest populated township in Wood County 86th largest township in the State of Ohio. Population over time: 1990 13,176 2000 13,613 The decrease in population over 2010 12,512 time is due, in part, to annexation. The Perrysburg Township EMS Department is charged with providing acute prehospital medical care to individuals. Through mutual aid agreements and automatic aid, the department also provides protection on an as-needed basis to other municipalities throughout Wood County. FIRE OPERATIONS Perrysburg Township has 18 Full-time Firefighters Fire Suppression 12 Part-time Firefighters Fire Investigation 13 Volunteer Firefighters Fire Prevention and Inspection Fires still occur and remain the principal task, however, prevention materials such as smoke detectors are available by request.
