SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

Occasional Paper No.1, 1973

COPYRIGHT, SOURISSEAU ACADEMY, 1973 PREFACE

The Sourisseau Academy is pleased to present its first Occasional Paper. We hope that it proves to be a forecast of future endeavours: it is scholarly, and it fulfills a need that has long been felt. We trust that subsequent publications meet these criteria as completely as does this union list. Publications Committee Jerome B. Munday, Chairman Christine B. Simpson Robert Harmon

The appearance of Occasional Paper No. 1 fulfills one of the purposes for which the Sourisseau Academy was chartered: "To prepare and disseminate historical scholarship to the university and community, and to present results of research and service activities through publications and other media." This activity of the Sourisseau Academy is one of many that takes place during the academic year. A generous bequest from the late Miss Eva Sourisseau provided the initial funding for the Academy. We are grateful, in addition, to the members of the Sourisseau family for their suggestions. It is fitting that our first publication should be a useful tool for further historical research on the history of Santa Clara County. Through the efforts of Jean Wheeler, we now have, at long last, a valuable source of information for the study of this region. We are also grateful to James Noah, Director of University Relations, Larry Daniello, University Editor, and the University Duplicating Center for their assistance and technical advice. We invite comments on this publication from our readers. Editorial Board Ted C. Hinckley, Chairman Lawrence B. Lee Robert E. Levinson
