We are thrilled to return to Mountain View Mausoleum & Cemetery for our 7th annual production.

Since founding Unbound Productions in 2008, our company has grown from an annual event to a year-round theatre company with a thriving Membership base and an ever-expanding group of phenomenal artists. Those of you who were able to join usfor A Night at the Mausoleum III in April, our enhanced staged readings The Huntington throughout the summer, and our Wicked Lit installation ofThe Monkey’s Paw right here at Mountain View have been able to enjoy the fruits of this growth. All of that work has brought us here, to Wicked Lit 2015 - what we do believe (as we say every year, and we mean it every year) is our best production yet!

In addition to enhancing our technical capabilities to bring an even more dynamic look and feel to what Wicked Lit fans have come to expect, we are excited to have been able to invite several brilliant new creatives into the fold (not to mention a host of new actors who have never before taken part in an Unbound show). Veteran Unbound actor Susannah Myrvold (most recently “The Buffoon” inThe Masque of the Red Death Experience, WL13) joined the WL15 company as a playwright - we were so happy to be able to present the world premiere of her funny and strange adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s The Ebony Frame. We are also ecstatic to welcome veteran Los Angeles theatre artists Darin Anthony and Jaime Robledo into the Unbound family as the directors of The Grove of Rashomon and The Ebony Frame, respectively.

All in all, between the fresh artistic voices and our growing education program, it’s beena tremendous year for our company. Thank you for taking the ride along with us!

Enjoy the show, Paul Millet, Jeff G. Rack, and Jonathan Josephson Staff of Unbound Productions WL-2 Production History

When I talk about Edith Nesbit’s short story, “The Ebony Frame,” all I want to talk about is the ending. The narrator is so bitter and no one in the world will ever understand why. But I can’t talk about the ending here, so instead I’ll tell you about two elements I had to leave out of the play for the sake of brevity.

In the very first sentence, the narrator says “To be rich is a luxurious sensation, the more so when you have plumbed the depths of hard-up-ness as a Fleet Street hack, a picker-up of unconsidered pars, a reporter, an unappreciated journalist...” At first, this just seemed like a list of undignified jobs. But then I thought, a reporter and a journalist? It turns out a “Fleet Street hack” is also a reporter, and “pars” is old-timey slang for paragraphs. The narrator was a reporter through and through, and a slightly bombastic one at that. Maybe that’s why his pars went unconsidered. This bristling verbosity runs through the entire piece, told in the voice of a hack writer. And to add extra irony, when he tries to tell his own story, no one will believe him.

The other element I was sorry to lose was Mildred’s mother. She was a little bit grouchy, and when she came in with Mildred they were exponentially more disruptive to Henry’s peace of mind. If you like, you can imagine that Mildred has a mother at home who already considers Henry to be her son-in-law and is planning to live out her retirement years in his beautiful new house. Usher Re-Re-Imagined a note from Paul Millet, The Fall of the House of Usher playwright

I originally adapted The Fall of the House of Usher in 2009 for the very firstWicked Lit production at Greystone Mansion. While Poe’s iconic story has always been one of my favorites, adapting it into a play proved to be incredibly challenging. Why was the narrator (whom I named Nathaniel) summoned to the house? What did Roderick want? And what was the deal with Madeline? We had secured Greystone relatively late in the production process and consequently there was very little time to answer those and other questions. I wrote from simple instinct and also directed that first production. The end result was an exciting Wicked Lit experience, but as a play, I was not satisfied.

I revisited the play in 2011 and then again in 2014 when the play was featured as a staged reading during A Night at the Mausoleum II, but there was still work to be done. Shortly after closing Wicked Lit last year, Jeff approached Jonathan and me with a vision he had to stage the play here at Mountain View. I was admittedly skeptical at first. After all, this is a mausoleum, not a large mansion. But Jeff’s idea was compelling so I dove in once again and took the play apart.

And that brings us to this evening: Roderick, Madeline and Nathaniel are back in a completely re-envisioned adaptation. For those who sawWicked Lit 2009, what you will see tonight is not new characters behaving in completely different ways, but rather you will see the same haunting story told through a new lens that hopefully creates a tremendous Wicked Lit experience as well as a satisfying Wicked Lit play.

WL-17 The “In a Grove” Effect a note from Jonathan Josephson, The Grove of Rashomon playwright

When I came upon Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s “In A Grove” - I immediately fell in love with the text. The story is a recounting of a cutthroat’s attack on a young couple in 12th Century Japan, told from a number of different perspectives. It has rich characters, gut-wrenching secrets and lies, and a samurai telling his story from beyond the grave (my “in” in terms of making this piece work for the cemetery). This adaptation was also a way of exploring cultural and societal issues of three different time periods - the 12th Century where the story was set, the 1920s when the story was written, and present day when the story was adapted. It is my aim that by altering the perspective of the point of view of the story from an unseen police commissioner to the mother of the survivors of the attack, and by giving the maiden and samurai greater agency to speak their truth about what happened to them during the horrific event, we can look at the story through new eyes.

In terms of the title of this article, it was only after reading the story several times and starting an initial outline of what would become this play did I realize that this magnificent short story was the inspiration for the iconic Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon. I watched the film - and it’s fantastic - but I realized that the “Rashomon Effect” that Kurosawa has been credited with for all of these years really wasn’t his idea. It’s truly Akutagawa’s “In A Grove Effect” that gave us the notion of retelling the same story from multiple perspectives as a way of exploring the drama of truths.

Madness Ensues a note from Debbie MacMahon, creator of The System (the Wicked Lit 2015 Frame)

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether,” published 1844, is the source from which the evening’s “Frame” is loosely contextualized. While a prime purpose is to convey Wicked Lit information, this lighthearted tale borrows from Poe’s story and André de Lorde’s adaptation for the Grand Guignol stage. That Poe names his Doctor Maillard is a clue to a deeper commentary. Stanislaus Maillard was a key instigator in the event that sparked the French Revolution, the Storming of the Bastille. Poe’s story conveys revolution: the oppressed overthrow oppressors, bourgeois supplant aristocrats, and madness both inspires and ensues. A balance might lie between the chained oppression of the Old Regime and the mad danger of the mob mentality. Our version might be silly but Poe’s story is worth the read.
