Nari Ward TILL, LIT June 2—August 25, 2017 536 West 22nd Street, New York #nariward | @lehmannmaupin Opening Reception: Friday, June 2, 6-8 PM New York, April 27, 2017—Lehmann Maupin is pleased to present TILL, LIT, Nari Ward’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Ward will debut a series of new work comprised of mixed media paintings, sculptures, and installations. These works examine the ways value is assigned throughout society, with Ward attempting to disrupt existing monetary- based value structures in favor of social enrichment. On the occasion of this exhibition, Ward and Lehmann Maupin will donate a percentage of sales to Housing Works, the New York City-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to end the dual crisis of homelessness and AIDS. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Friday, June 2, from 6-8 PM, at 536 West 22nd Street. Ward garnered acclaim early in his career with pieces like Amazing Grace (1993), which he produced while in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Ward created a sculptural installation using hundreds of discarded strollers and recycled fire hoses woven to resemble a ship’s hull as a reference to Tec, 2017, U.S. currency edges, acrylic paint, indelible ink, overproof white rum, and used cash register drawers, 68.75 x 56.75 x 4.5 inches, 174.6 x 144.1 x both the history of the transatlantic slave trade and today’s 11.4 cm. Launching the gallery’s official exhibitions program at its Seoul location, CORRECTIONAL will feature sculpture, painting, and drawing for the New York-based artist’s first exhibition in Korea. The works in the exhibition, along with the title, offer critical insight into the multiple associations and meanings derived from the term “correctional,” which can be interpreted as both punitive and Correctional Circle 1280, 2018, oak wood, copper sheet, copper nails, and darkening patina, 48 x altruistic. Early in his career, Ward garnered acclaim among a generation of artists who shifted the focus of contemporary art in the 1990s toward a more political tone. He developed a rigorous practice of repurposing found objects often collected in his neighborhood in Harlem, like fire hoses and baby strollers, creating juxtapositions of material that offer greater metaphorical interpretation, or social critique. -

Collection of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Richmond, Virginia — The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) announced the recent acquisition of Xquisite LiquorsouL, a 2009 installation work by Jamaican-born artist Nari Ward. Ward uses objects found discarded in his neighborhood in New York City — items like bottles, shopping carts, televisions, shoelaces, oil drums, clothing and strollers — to form his monumental sculptural and sound installations, which address issues related to consumerism, poverty, immigration and race. By transforming these everyday items into complex three-dimensional compositions, Ward effectively creates artworks laden with symbolism and profundity. His approach allows viewers to derive meaning independently and through free association. For Xquisite LiquorsouL, constructed from a found neon sign, artificial flowers, shoelaces and wood, Ward transposed the letters and left only the letters “S-O-U-L” illuminated. “Nari Ward is a masterful historian and storyteller. Rather than the presentation of fixed narratives, Ward allows the material to speak as they are imbued with the residuals of place and personhood. As a practice, his use of assemblage as a contemporary artist allows the museum to build a bridge between those artists deemed as folk artists and those who are academically trained, yet who owe so much to the practice of the former,” said Valerie Cassel Oliver, VMFA’s Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. -

I-B-5 THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Appointment of Nari Ward as Distinguished Professor at Hunter College WHEREAS, Professor Nari Ward is an internationally recognized artist; and WHEREAS, In addition to 27 solo exhibitions and 80 group exhibitions between 1993 and 2017 and pieces in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Musee d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg; and GAM, Galleria Civica di Arte, Torino, Italy, Professor Ward received the 2017 $100,000 Vilcek Prize, recognizing contributions of immigrants to American culture, the 2015 Joyce Foundation Award for a major commission in Detroit, the 2012 Rome Prize from the American Academy of Rome, and was the first recipient, of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Willard L. Metcalf Award in 1998; now therefore be it RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York appoint Nari Ward as Distinguished Professor of Art at Hunter College effective November 1, 2018, with compensation of $28,594 per annum in addition to his regular academic salary, subject to financial ability.
