Continued on page 5 Druid Hills Tour of Homes: A Mother−Daughter Tradition Since 1984 By Marilyn Mauldin Lee and Linda Lee Duckett We are a mother (Marilyn) and daughter (Linda) who have been Shutze and Neel Reid. We like to hear the stories of the original attending the Druid Hill Tour of Homes for the past 34 years owners and the homes’ owners of today. The lovely gardens are and have fond memories of each year. We love the history of the another attraction. Like the homes, each one features different flow- lovely old homes. Each one of the homes is so different and unique, ers, shrubs, trees, etc. The homes are decorated with family treasures designed by architects of that time period like Phillip Trammell passed down through the generations, some from travels abroad. One of our favorite homes is where the 1989 movie “Driving Miss Daisy” was filmed. Another Druid Hills home that can be seen in that movie is 928 Oakdale Road, which includes a Summer House in the garden designed in the 1990s by Linda’s husband. The Lullwater Garden Club plant sale is always a must see, and we have several plants from these sales in our yards. Every time we drive by Olmsted Park, we say how beautiful it is and how fortunate Druid Hills is to have this treasure designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. It has been a pleasure to see the park’s restoration starting in 1997. A public survey conducted as part of the CTP revealed that sixty-seven N percent of commuters drive alone to get to work or school. Over 20 percent of commuters in Decatur either walk, bike or take transit. Even more interesting, 79 percent of residents reported having walked or ridden a bike to downtown Decatur. Additionally, the majority of residents feel that it is easy to get around the City. These results indicate a system that already provides a lot of choice for travelers. The following sections detail the extent of these choices, i.e. the facilities that make up the existing Decatur transportation network. The CTP uses this snapshot of how Decatur gets around in 2007 to recommend how the City can build upon its existing strengths to realize its vision of a healthy and well-connected community. Existing Street Network Streets are where it all comes together for travel in and through Decatur. The streets and their edges provide places for people to walk, bicycle and travel in buses and other vehicles. Compared with the MARTA rail system and off-road paths and greenways, the street system in Decatur accommodates the majority of travel and is detailed below. Roadway Classification in Decatur In 1974, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published the manual Highway Functional Classification - Concepts, Criteria and Procedures. The manual was revised in 1989 and forms the basis of this roadway classification inventory.

Roger Grant, Committee Chair Dr. Jerome V. Reel, Jr. Dr. Paul C. Anderson ABSTRACT Robert Winship Woodruff was born December 6, 1889, and died March 7, 1985. For more than sixty‐two years he headed the Coca‐Cola Company, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Woodruff amassed a tremendous fortune and was for years the richest man in Georgia and one of the wealthiest in the South. His wealth made him extremely powerful in political circles, and he came to dominate the city of Atlanta in a way unlike any other private citizen in any other comparable American city of the time.
