The very funny Gay comic, Alec Mapa, entertained us. His life partner is a native of Marrero, and I had the pleasure of speak- ing with them after the Dinner. Off stage Mapa is a quiet young man as is his partner so it was like pulling teeth to get a conversation out of them. There were two low points of the evening for me and everyone I spoke with after the Dinner. First, there was a lovely African-American actress who sang for her supper. She vacillated between stay- ing on and off key and melody which made her medley almost painful to the ear. Then there was the too long Blah, Blah, Blah from a Federal Club member that sounded like she was patting herself on the shoul- der while telling her audience that we should give more. Now just who did she think she was talking to? This is a $150 a plate dinner. Who is going to pay that if they are not supporting HRC? All in all this dinner was about the same as the last seven or eight dinners I had attended for HRC years ago. (Some of that time I was on the Dinner Committee and worked on begging for auction items.) There was too much talk, not enough importance placed on the recipients of the year (especially Julie) and the people were beautiful all dressed for a formal occa- sion. The food was good. The room was beautiful and the company great. Thank to HRC for another productive year.
