OUR OPINION 2 lives saved and counting

he first time, back in 2017, he used his hands and lungs to pump life back into T someone whose body was failing him. On Monday, he used his heart and soul to connect with a man whose life had spiraled so far out of control he was ready to end it. Deputy Aaron Belfrey has done twice what most of us can only dream of doing once. Two individuals walk the Earth who wouldn’t be here without him today. He’s a humble man and you wouldn’t guess it to talk to him. But in grainy cell-phone footage shot by a motorist on Monday, Belfrey can be seen work- ing hard to get a man down off the SR 247/I-75 overpass. The encounter only lasted about five minutes and there weren’t a lot of words exchanged, but you can sense the inner strength Belfrey was drawing upon from his body language. If that sounds a little over the top, so be it. We don’t have words to describe what we saw Gaining insight with age on that blurry, silent tape. May the man we saw teetering so close to the edge find peace and the strength to rebuild his life. What makes us who we are We thank God that Deputy Belfrey found him think that as we age, we also the core of who we are, what before he threw everything away. grow more introspective. NFL PREP FOOTBALL Jaguars find ground game, still SENSE OF URGENCY looking for consistency Leonard Fournette ran for a career- high 225 yards against Denver.

By MARK LONG Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Jaguars want to be a physical, smash-mouth team that has enough ver- satility to play other styles when needed. Coach Doug Marrone has seen snippets of it on both sides of the ball. He’s still waiting to see it on a consistent basis. The Jaguars (2-2) would no doubt like to repeat their offensive performance from Sunday’s 26-24 victory at winless Denver. Leonard Fournette ran 29 times for a career-high 225 yards, and rookie Gardner Minshew II directed a game-winning drive in the final minutes.
