From “Discourses of Sobriety” to Deadpan Comedy: Christopher Guest’s Musical ... 1 From “Discourses of Sobriety” to Deadpan Comedy: Christopher Guest’s Musical Trilogy Charles Holdefer The idea was, “Wouldn’t it be fun to do a movie where people got this right for a change?” Harry Shearer, aka bass player “Derek Smalls” of Spinal Tap (Muir 2004: 25) 1 The entertainment industry has long been fascinated by the “truth” behind popular music. Indeed, the first feature length talking film, The Jazz Singer (Crosland 1927), starred Al Jolson as Jakie Rabinowitz, a young man struggling to reconcile his Jewish identity to his success at performing in blackface to white audiences. Since then, there has been an endless stream of movies about music. Some are explicitly biographical, with actors cast as iconic musicians: e.g., The Glenn Miller Story (Mann 1954), The Buddy Holly Story (Rash 1978), Ray (Hackford 2004), Walk the Line (Mangold 2005) and Bohemian Rhapsody (Singer 2018).

  • Blim Dissertation Revisions Draft 2
Patchwork Nation: Collage, Music, and American Identity by Richard Daniel Blim A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music: Musicology) in the University of Michigan 2013 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Mark Clague, Co-Chair Associate Professor Charles Hiroshi Garrett, Co-Chair Associate Professor Paul A. Anderson Professor Steven M. Whiting Acknowledgements This dissertation has benefited from what I can only describe as a collage of voices of support and wisdom throughout the process. I wish to acknowledge the financial support of the Rackham Graduate School; The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. I owe a great deal to my committee for their insight and guidance from the beginning. Steven Whiting helped sharpen my theoretical approach and navigate various definitions. Paul Anderson’s comments always cut right to the heart of whatever issue of question was most daunting and pointed me in the right division, helping me to tell, as he often suggested, a bigger story. It has been my fortune to find two co-chairs who work so well together. Mark Clague and Charles Hiroshi Garrett have encouraged my interdisciplinary interests throughout my time at the University of Michigan. For the dissertation, they have pushed me to become a better scholar and writer, patiently reading sprawling drafts and helping to wrangle my ideas into shape, and tactfully impelling me to pursue bigger and bigger questions with more and more clarity and nuance. In particular, I am deeply appreciative of Mark’s energizing and provocative pep talks and willingness to entertain any question no matter how tangential it might have seen, and of Chuck’s impeccable and thoughtful comments on everything I submitted, returned with superhuman speed, and his dissertation whisperer-like ability to get me to make the inevitable cuts.

Thank you for all of your help, insight and patience! I would also like to thank my friends (you know who you are) for all of your encouragement and kind words, and for understanding my absences and occasional moodiness during the creation of this thesis. I would also like to give a special nod to my PhD colleagues, for the interchange of ideas and the laughs that we share whenever we meet. I thank my family for constantly reminding me of where I come from and what I am capable of. And last but not least, for the “triad”, my parents and my husband, the pillars of my life, I will write in Brazilian Portuguese, so the message is more heartfelt and clear: Painho (Leopoldo), Mainha (Socorro) e meu querido Oscar, muito obrigada por todo o apoio e amor que vocês tem me dado durante todos estes anos. Abstract This thesis discusses the relationship between mockumentaries and the music industry.

  • Harry Shearer
HARRY SHEARER 10/25/2006 by Sue Strachan (https://www.myneworleans.com/author/sue-strachan/) You’ve met Harry Shearer before, but probably never knew it. Well, maybe not in person, but you’ve either heard him speak and sing, or seen him on TV and movie screens. Derek Smalls. Mr. Burns. Ned Flanders. Sound familiar yet? Shearer is one of the few performers who has managed to crossover to other creative realms successfully & he’s a musician (bass guitar), actor, writer, radio show host, director, producer, composer and satirist. A chameleon, no doubt, but one that stands out in whatever he’s in. Maybe it was because he started young: his first big break came at age 7, when his piano teacher-turned-agent cast him in Abbott and Costello Go to Mars. (Of note: Abbott and Costello think they are on Mars when they are really in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.) He was the original Eddie Haskell in the pilot for Leave it to Beaver, yet he has never seen an episode. Other credits? A member of the late 1960s, early & 70’s, comedy group Credibility Gap, guest star on several TV on shows, including Miami Vice and Dawson’s Creek and was / in the cast of Saturday Night Live for two seasons; originated the role of Derek Smalls in the rockumentary, This is Spinal Tap and Mark Shubb in A Mighty Wind, and is the director, writer and actor of Teddy Bear’s Picnic … This is a very small sampling. But let’s check in on what Harry is currently doing: • Hosts Le Show; on the radio for 22 years.
