TM XTERRA RETURNS TO UTAH, THE STATE OF SPORT

In 1996 mountain biking and triathlon met in a duel of the fittest on the island of Maui. The race consisted of an open- ocean swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. It represented a bold new racing format that attracted outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, mountain bikers and triathletes. The mountain bikers brought their laid-back style and bold self-assurance. The triathletes brought their hard-core training and avid dedication. They soon discovered a common spirit and attitude that pulled them together. The relationship would become an internationally- recognized brand called XTERRA.

A typical XTERRA Tri is comprised of the following: 1.5 kilometer (0.93-mile) swim in an ocean, lake, or river 30 kilometer (18.6-mile) mountain bike on off-road trails 10 kilometer (6.2-mile) trail run on a variety of surfaces

2016 marks the 21st year of XTERRA racing, and it’s 13th year in Utah.

The inaugural XTERRA Pan America Championship is the culmination of a series of off-road triathlons spanning South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada, and the U.S. It’s also the last race in the America Tour for both our nationwide off-road triathlon and trail running series. 13 MEET THE PROFESSIONALS

No. 1 – Josiah Middaugh from Eagle-Vail, Colorado Pan Am Pro Series Rank: 1 Nickname: Beast Mode www.middaughcoaching.com / @josiahmiddaugh Born: July 25, 1978 in East Jordan, Michigan. This year: Finished 2nd at XTERRA Costa Rica (to Karl Shaw), won XTERRA Argentina, XTERRA Tahiti, XTERRA Oak Mountain, and XTERRA Colorado, before suffering mechanicals at XTERRA Dominican Republic (Akerson won, Middaugh was 4th). Came down with an emergency case of appendicitis on the night of XTERRA Mexico on August 6. In Utah: Has won here twice, last year in an awesome back-and-forth battle with Braden Currie and back in 2012. Has been in the top 3 seven straight years. Was 2nd to Ruben Ruzafa in 2014, 2nd to Leonardo Chacon in 2013. On the line: With 342 points Middaugh is the Pan Am Pro Series leader but Karsten Madsen from Canada and Rom Akerson from Costa Rica are close behind with 322 points apiece. Josiah needs to finish top 3 to secure the crown, however, if (hypothetically speaking) Karsten or Rom win in Utah and Josiah finishes fourth or worse, they could take the title. Thoughts: “I'm feeling pretty good and had a couple good weeks of training. Plenty of guys that will be going for it. Good to see a deep field. My plan as always is to race my own race and hang it all out there in all three disciplines. I think I can be within a minute on the swim, but it's possi- ble Karl Shaw could push the pace of that front pack and some guys might be able to go with him and put a bigger gap on me. I'm really looking forward to the bike but I know from last year that to get to the front I will have to be pushing very hard from the start. The run could be inter- esting if there are 4 or 5 guys really close. My number one goal is to win the race and the only time I will think about the tour title is if something goes wrong like a flat tire. Then I might be forced to do some math.” Credentials: Reigning XTERRA World Champion. 10x Middaugh Coaching Corner column. Thoughts: “This season has been a massive break- through that I didn't really expect. I have gotten strong in every race since Alabama. My goal in Utah is simple. I want to win. I have found when I shoot for the stars I have reached them this year. I respect everyone I race with and this will be the biggest field yet but I have bested some pretty amazing athletes this year and I want to keep that going in Utah. I have a massive amount of trust in the training I have done leading into this race. I will be racing with an eye over my shoulder as Josiah will be a man on a mission and he can never be counted out so many people have over the years and he proves them wrong. To beat him on this course you need a day where everything goes perfect and in XTERRA that's far from reality. The game plan is simple on my end swim hard and get away early. Then back up the bike with one of the day's fastest run splits. I look forward to putting the fitness to the test.” Credentials: Did his first-ever XTERRA when he was just 17-years-old back in 2009. I came straight from Philadelphia, (alti- tude 15 feet) to a race in the mountains of Utah (over 4,000’). Back in December of 2015 TEAM Unlimited, owners and producers of the XTERRA, announced the formation of the XTERRA Pan American Tour which connects the sports’ major events in South, Central, and North America as well as the Caribbean. The inaugural 10-stop series for both amateur and professional athletes started March 20th at XTERRA Costa Rica and concludes September 17 with the XTERRA Pan American Championship race in Ogden, Utah. In between were two majors in the U.S., two in Canada, and one each in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

2016 XTERRA PAN AMERICAN TOUR March 20 – XTERRA Costa Rica (Playa Reserva Conchal) *SILVER March 26 – XTERRA Argentina (Dique Ullum, San Juan) *GOLD May 7 – XTERRA Brazil (Ilhabela) *SILVER May 21 – XTERRA Oak Mountain (Pelham, AL, USA) *GOLD June 25 – XTERRA Mine Over Matter (Milton, ON, CAN) *SILVER July 10 – XTERRA Victoria (B.C., CAN) *SILVER July 16 – XTERRA Beaver Creek (Avon, CO, USA) *GOLD July 31 – XTERRA Dominican Republic (Barahona) *GOLD Aug 6 – XTERRA Mexico (Tapalpa) *GOLD Sep 17 – XTERRA Pan American Championship (Ogden, UT, USA)

The XTERRA Pan American Tour features Gold and Silver level events, just like the XTERRA European Tour, where Gold events award points on a 100-point basis and Silver races award points on a 75-point basis.

GOLD POINTS: 100-Point Basis 1=100, 2=90, 3=82, 4=75, 5=69, 6=63. 7=58, 8=53, 9=49, 10=45, 11=41, 12=37, 13=34, 14=31, 15=28 SILVER POINTS: 75-Point Basis 1=75, 2=67, 3=61, 4=56, 5=51, 6=47, 7=43, 8=39, 9=36, 10=33, 11=30, 12=27, 13=25, 14=23, 15=21

Gold events offer the equivalent of $15,000 USD in elite prize money to the top seven men and women, plus 50 spots into the XTERRA World Championship for amateurs. Silver races offer the equivalent of $7,500 USD in elite prize money to the top five men and women, plus at least 25 spots into the XTERRA World Championship for amateurs (the exception is XTERRA Brazil, which offers 50 spots to Worlds).

The XTERRA Pan American Championship race in Utah will offer $20,000 USD for the race and distribute an additional $60,000 USD in prize money to the top 10 men and women in the final XTERRA Pan American Pro Series rankings.

Elites and amateurs competing in the XTERRA Pan American Tour count their best four scores (two Gold, two Silver) from the first nine events plus whatever they get, or don’t get, at the XTERRA Pan American Championship race which will be scored at the 100-point level. Five Scores Total. Thus, the final point total combines an athletes best two Gold scores, best two Silver scores, plus their XTERRA Pan American Championship race points. Athletes can race in as many of the five Gold events as they like, but just their best two will count at the 100-point level, with other Gold finishes counting at the 75-point level.

Amateur athletes need to race at least two (any two) XTERRA Pan American Tour majors listed in schedule above to be eligible for Tour honors at the end of the season. Athletes from all nations are welcome to race in the one-day XTERRA Pan American Championship race as no qualification is necessary.

Note: The XTERRA Pan American Tour did not replace the XTERRA America Tour for amateurs, it supplemented it. The XTERRA Pan American Championship race will also double as the XTERRA USA Championship race and award national titles to the top American finisher in each division. 30 2016 XTERRA PAN AM PRIZE MONEY BREAKDOWN

The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions have a chance to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah on September 17 (which doubles as the Pan America Championship). This year there were 50 races in 38 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan).

Here's how the Series works: 1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands. MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2016. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75-79. We also have Physically Challenged Divisions.

Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories: Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and their best four finishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race in at least one event in their region, and must COUNT two events in their region. Note: You don’t have to race in two, but you have to count two in your region. Bottom line, to play the game you have to race in at least one event in your region, and everything more than that is gravy and increases your chances of winning.

4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn more points at XCS races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races at more than one XCS event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as an XPS race. There are two points systems: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Championship Series Races: 100 90 82 75 69 63 58 53 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Points Series Races: 75 67 61 56 51 47 43 39 36 33 30 27 25 23 21

34 HOW THE XTERRA AMERICA TOUR WORKS CONTINUED...

5) BECOMING A REGIONAL CHAMP: At the end of the regular season in late August, the athlete with the most points - by gender, by division, by region - earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion and earns a qualifying spot into the XTERRA World Championship. The top American finisher at the Pan Am/USA Championship is the 2016 XTERRA USA National Champion.

Note: All XTERRA America Tour events are sanctioned by All the technical details on How the Series Works USA Triathlon, the national governing body of multisport in can be found online at xterraplanet.com the United States. As such all athletes are subject to the rules and regulations set forth by the USAT. Details available at usatriathlon.org.

The XTERRA Points Series races are a collection of independently produced off-road triathlons owned and operated by local promoters, while the Championship Series events are bigger races with pro purses on full-length courses operated by the TEAM Unlimited / XTERRA staff.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 – Both Stoltz and Whitmore reclaimed the XTERRA titles that slipped away from them in 2006 when Stoltz (who won this race in 2001, ’02 and ’03) broke his back and wrist pre-riding and Whitmore (who won four straight from 2002-05) suffered through a series of flats that left her out of the title chase. Stoltz and Whitmore finished with perfect 400-point scores in the five-stop XTERRA U.S. Pro Series and thus earned $19,000 for their efforts ($14,000 for winning the Series and $5,000 for winning the race).
