Guerin Avian intestinal spirochetosis is a disease of poultry caused by the spirochete bacterium Brachyspira, and is characterized by increased mortality, reduced egg production, weight loss, diarrhoea, and fecal staining of egg shells, which leads to downgrading of eggs. The presence of Brachyspira species in Ontario layer chicken flocks and its association with downgrades for dirty eggs was explored. Further, farm interviews were conducted to determine risk factors associated with the presence of Brachyspira species. The prevalence of Brachyspira species was significantly higher in flocks with a higher proportion of dirty eggs (dirty flocks) compared to those with a lower proportion of dirty eggs (clean flocks). Brachyspira pilosicoli was the only pathogenic species detected. Risk factors associated with the presence of Brachyspira species were flock age, barn age, multi-age farms, and housing type. Based on these findings, recommendations were suggested to control the occurrence of Brachyspira species and the associated dirty egg problem. A large proportion of them are able to self-propel in fluids with a vast diversity of swimming gaits and motility patterns. In this paper we present a biophysical survey of the available experimental data produced to date on the characteristics of motile behaviour in unicellular microswimmers. We assemble from the available literature empirical data on the motility of four broad categories of organisms: bacteria (and archaea), flagellated eukaryotes, spermatozoa and ciliates. Whenever possible, we gather the following biological, morphological, kinematic and dynamical parameters: species, geometry and size of the organisms, swimming speeds, actuation frequencies, actuation amplitudes, number of flagella and properties of the surrounding fluid. We then organise the data using the established fluid mechanics principles for propulsion at low Reynolds number. Specifically, we use theoretical biophysical models for the locomotion of cells within the same taxonomic groups of organisms as a means of rationalising the raw material we have assembled, while demonstrating the variability for organisms of different species within the same group. The material gathered in our work is an attempt to summarise the available experimental data in the field, providing a convenient and practical reference point for future studies. Some members of the spirochetes are pathogenic, including the causative agents of syphilis, Lyme disease, swine dysentery, and leptospirosis. Furthermore, their unique morphologies have attracted attention of structural biologists; however, the underlying physics of viscoelasticity-dependent spirochetal motility is a longstanding mystery. Elucidating the molecular basis of spirochetal invasion and interaction with hosts, resulting in the appearance of symptoms or the generation of asymptomatic reservoirs, will lead to a deeper understanding of host–pathogen relationships and the development of antimicrobials. Moreover, the mechanism of propulsion in fluids or on surfaces by the rotation of PFs within the narrow periplasmic space could be a designing base for an autonomously driving micro-robot with high efficiency. This review describes diverse morphology and motility observed among the spirochetes and further summarizes the current knowledge on their mechanisms and relations to pathogenicity, mainly from the standpoint of experimental biophysics. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, India Abstract Forty-six-year male from India presented with 2-year history of small volume non bloody diarrhea with mild abdominal pain. He had no history of fever or constitutional symptoms and only minimal weight loss. His blood evaluation showed mild iron deficiency anemia with normal serum albumin and renal profile. Routine stool examination showed no blood, pus cells, ova or parasites. Celiac serology was negative. Contrast enhanced CT (Computed Tomography) abdomen showed subcentimetric mesenteric lymph nodes, bowel was normal in size and thickness. Upper GI endoscopy was normal with normal duodenal biopsy; Ileocolonoscopy showed few aphthous ulcers in terminal ileum with mild nodularity. Ileal biopsies showed bluish filamentous structure on surface epithelium forming a thick false brush border appearance, suggestive of intestinal spirochetosis. Rest of ileal architecture was well preserved. Patient was commenced on cyclical antibiotics including Nitazoxanide, Metronidazole, doxycycline and Rifaximin. Patient on follow up showed improvement in symptoms and weight gain. Intestinal spirochetosis is commonly transmitted to human from infected animals. Our patient was butcher by occupation. Our case is an interesting presentation of Intestinal Spirochetosis in form of chronic diarrhea. The genus contains both important pathogens of livestock as well as commensals. Two species are known to infect humans: B. aalborgi and B. pilosicoli. There is some evidence suggesting that the veterinary pathogenic B. pilosicoli is a potential zoonotic agent, however, since diagnosis in humans is based on histopathology of colon biopsies, species identification is not routinely performed in human materials. Methods: The study population comprised 57 patients with microscopic evidence of Brachyspira infection and 26 patients with no histopathological evidence of Brachyspira infection. Concomitant faecal samples were available from three infected patients. Based on publically available 16S rDNA gene sequences of all Brachyspira species, species-specific primer sets were designed.

Although B. hyodysenteriae has been traditionally considered a pathogen mainly transmitted by direct contact, through the introduction of subclinically infected animals into a previously uninfected herd, recent findings position B. hyodysenteriae as a potential threat for indirect transmission between farms. This article summarizes the knowledge available on the etiological agent of SD and its virulence traits, and reviews the determinants of SD transmission. The between-herds and within-herd transmission routes are addressed. The factors affecting disease transmission are thoroughly discussed, i.e., environmental survival of the pathogen, husbandry factors (production system, production stage, farm management), role of vectors, diet influence and interaction of the microorganism with gut microbiota.
