Welcome to the 2010 Northeast Conference Women’s Soccer Championship! Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Northeast Conference is excited to present its women’s soccer championship along with tournament host, Long Island University. The NEC women’s soccer student-athletes have played some extremely exciting games this fall, and we expect this event will be a memorable one for the participating teams and the fans alike. The stage is set for three highly competitve matches, and we look forward to crowning the 2010 champions! Consisting of 12 institutions of higher learning located throughout six states, the NEC is committed to providing opportunities for student- athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom, as well as becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. NEC member institutions include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner. will become a core member of the NEC in 2012 upon completion of the five-year NCAA Division I reclassification period. NEC institutions span a number of diverse locations, from the urban bustle of Brooklyn, NY to the rural settings of Loretto, PA and Emmitsburg, MD, to the beaches and shoreline of West Long Branch, NJ. But when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the NEC is consistent - to provide its members the opportunity to participate in quality competition at the Division I level while operating programs that are fully integrated in the academic mission of each institution. The NEC’s commitment to academic excellence has translated into national recognition for both individual student-athletes and the league’s member institutions as a whole. NEC student-athletes consis- tently graduate at well above the national average and its athletic programs continue to be honored for their Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures. On a conference-wide level, more than 2,200 student-athletes qualified for the NEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10, a 13 percent increase from the previous year. Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis (PA) posted the highest overall GPAs in the conference to share the NEC Institutional Academic Award. On the field of play, the NEC has enjoyed many successes both regionally and nationally, competing in 23 NCAA championships each year. In women’s soccer, the Conference has produced a number of All-Americans and Academic All-Americans. The future of the NEC looks even brighter with new facilities and improvements recently completed, under construction or in planning stages at a majority of the league’s member institutions. We also would like to thank you, the fans, for your support and tremendous enthusiasm of the sport of women’s soccer. Enjoy the action!

Sincerely,

Noreen Morris, Commissioner

Message To Spectators Northeast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institu- tions. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integ- rity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these seven principles.

The NEC has communicated this message through public service announcements that air on televised football and games, public address announcements at all events and signage on each member campus. The Conference has also implemented a Team Sportsmanship Award program to recognize those teams and student-athletes who adhere to the principles of sports- manship and pursue victory with honor. Bryant, Monmouth and Saint Francis (PA) each finished the 2009-10 academic year with a league-high four sportsmanship awards, which are voted on by student-athletes and coaches following the conclusion of each athletic season.

In 2010-11, the NEC has continued its partnership with the NCAA on a "Respect" campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through education, communication and enforcement when problems arise. NEC Women’s Soccer History NEC Tournament Records

2009 NEC Championship Game Recap: Monmouth Tops Host Central Connecticut State In Overtime For Its Second Title In Three Years

New Britain, CT - No. 2 seed Monmouth University upset top-seeded Central Connecticut State University 1-0 in overtime on Sunday to capture the 2009 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament Title. MU forward Mary Wilks (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) scored the game-winner and her league-leading 13th goal on the season. She was named NEC Tournament MVP for her efforts.

Neither team could find the back of the net through 90 minutes of regulation play, but it didn't take long for the Hawks to net a score against CCSU when the whistle blew to start the first overtime period. Wilks received a through-ball pass on the right side of the field from senior Alessandra DeTata (Brick, NJ/ Brick Memorial) who collected the ball just inside midfield. Wilks used her tremendous speed to dribble past a CCSU defender and finish the ball high over keeper Caity Casey’s (Guilford, CT/Branford) head into the back left side of the net with just 1:02 gone in the first overtime period. The goal marked Wilks’ second game-winner of the tournament.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the first two periods as MU had 13 total shots, five on goal, and CCSU had 12, seven on goal; however, neither could capitalize on any of them.

All-NEC first-team goalkeeper junior Lia Fierro (South Mills, NJ/Millburn) made three saves in net for the Hawks to preserve the shutout, posting her second of the postseason and 14th on the season, just one behind the MU all-time record of 15. Casey, an all-tournament selection also notched three saves and finished the season with six shutouts.

This was the Blue Devils second loss ever in a conference final, falling to 7-2 all-time in championship games. They finish the season 12-7-2. MU (15-4-1) improved their championship record to an even 4-4 all-time.
