Concentrated whites - Sumptuous reds

2019 continues a great run of vintages in Burgundy. Since 2015, Burgundy has had five excellent vintages in a row, something that would have been unimagineable just 20 years ago. And 2020 is looking promising too. The combination of climate change and more meticulous has so far been a winning one for the region.

2019 started as it meant to go on. A dry spring saw no repeat of the threat of mildew that had required constant vigilance in 2018. Frost, however, did affect many of the lower-lying of the Côte de Beaune and this, coupled with a rare week of poor weather at the beginning of June when the in particular was flowering, resulted in a reduced crop in all the famous villages of the Cote de Beaune (Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne). Thereafter, the summer was consistently warm and dry, right up to the harvest whch, for most, took place in sunny conditions during the second and third weeks of September.

The dry weather had concentrated the fruit, resulting in little juice but generating musts high in both sugar and acidity. The flavours are also some of the most intense that I’ve seen in recent years with concentrated, tight-knit whites and dense but harmonious reds.

Wine-makers recognised the need to pick promptly and quickly as the grapes were ripening fast and there was a danger that late harvested fruit would give wine excessively high in alcohol and lacking acidity as well as losing the prized freshness of aromas that is the hallmark of fine Burgundy. Those that successfully avoided this have made wines that are rich and intense whilst retaining harmony and vitality. The successful whites have wonderful depth and a closer-knit structure than the delicious but looser-textured 2018s. Whilst some 2019 whites are on the soft side and will require early drinking, the best will age magnificently. There are great examples from Chablis in the north to Macon in the south as no region was especially favoured.

The reds are more uniform in quality with, as in 2018, magnificent wines being produced not only in the most prestigious appellations of the Cote d’Or but also in the humbler villages of the Côte d’Or (Marsannay, Fixin, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny, Santenay) and in the Chalonnais where there are some great value wines in Mercurey and Givry.

The small crop and excellent quality would normally have resulted in significant price increases but the uncertain economic outlook has tempered producers’ enthusiasm to raise prices and, despite the decline in the value of the pound against the euro over the past twelve months, this offer sees modest or no increases on the vast majority of wines.

At such levels, I have no hesitation in commending them to you.

Charles Taylor M.W. Samuel Billaud

Samuel is making many of the most exciting wines coming out of Chablis today, equal in quality to those of Jean-Marie and Bernard Raveneau but at a fraction of the price. His 2019s are another great success, a little lower in alcohol and higher in acidity than the 2018s with fine depth and concentration as a result of lower yields. Samuel picked early, at the beginning of September, and the wines are a winning combination of the minerality of 2017 and the richness of 2018. All the wines have been aged for 12-18 months on the fine lees in order to develop extra tension and complexity.

Petit Chablis SB1 192.00 133.00 This is not your normal Petit Chablis as it comes from a single plot of vines beautifully sited just above grand Les . Vinified in stainless steel vats, this is crisp and pure. A splendid example of unoaked chardonnay that is every bit as good as any Chablis I've tasted this year. Drink 2021-2025. Chablis SB2 228.00 163.00 Samuel makes this crisp, fresh Chablis from three parcels of vines in different sectors of the appellation; Les Pargues towards the village of Préhy, Les Cartes between the premiers crus of Vaillons and Montmains where the vines are 60 years old and Bas de Chapelots just below Montée de Tonnerre. A lovely, aromatic wine with excellent freshness and minerality. Has fine concentration and will age gracefully. Drink 2021-2025. Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes SB3 336.00 253.00 Vaillons is one of the finest premiers crus on the left bank of the River Serein with a south-easterly exposure that captures all the morning sun. Fresh and aromatic this is delicious to enjoy young but the old vines contribute depth and concentration which enables it to age effortlessly. Drink 2021-2026. Chablis 1er Cru Fourneaux SB4 336.00 253.00 A warm, earlier-ripening on a south-facing slope in the village of Fleys on the right bank of the Serein. Farmed organically, this is a fuller, richer style of Chablis with lovely weight and intensity. Drink 2021-2026.

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains SB5 336.00 253.00 One of the best-known premiers crus, adjacent to Vaillons with a similar south-easterly exposure. There is more clay in the soil here which gives a fuller-bodied, rounder wine with impressive power and depth. Drink 2021-2026. Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu SB6 372.00 283.00 Mont de Milieu lies between Fourneaux and Montée de Tonnerre on the right bank and Samuel has vines at three levels on the hillside. Vinified 80% in stainless steel vats and 20% in 2-4 year old 450 litre oak demi- muids, this has tremendous depth and minerality and deserves time in bottle to develop. Drink 2021-2027.

Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaumes SB13 420.00 323.00 Fermented half in stainless steel and half in 2 and 3 year old 450 litre oak demi-muids from the Chassin tonnellerie in Rully. This is a great success, rich and aromatic without being too oaky. A fine, stylish wine with good structure and a lovely, generous texture. Drink 2021-2027.

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre SB8 420.00 323.00 Vinified in the same manner as the Mont de Milieu, this comes from two plots of vines at different altitudes within Montée de Tonnerre; Chapelots near the base and Triangle higher up. Often Samuel’s finest premier cru combining the power of Mont de Milieu with the purity of Séchet. Drink 2021-2027.

Chablis Grand Cru Bougros SB14 780.00 623.00 Like all the grands crus, this is fermented and aged for twelve months in 450 and 500 litre oak demi-muids followed by six months in stainless steel vats. Bougros is the most westerly of the grands crus and the warmth of the afternoon sun gives a richer, more opulent wine. The most open and aromatic of Samuel’s grands crus with magnificent fruit and length on the finish. Drink 2022-2027.

Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots SB9 792.00 633.00 Blanchots is the most easterly of the grands crus, adjacent to Les Clos. Similar style and quality, powerful and restrained with great potential. Drink 2022-2027. Chablis Grand Cru Preuses SB11 816.00 653.00 Les Preuses lies towards the western end of the grands crus and produces the most elegant wine of the domaine. Aged in 3 and 4 year old demi-muids from Chassin. Drink 2022-2027.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos SB12 852.00 683.00 The low yields in 2019 resulted in just a single 450 litre demi-muid (from Chassin) of this sublime grand cru. Consistently Samuel’s finest wine with magnificent richness and intensity. Drink 2022-2028.

Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 5 Domaine Séguinot-Bordet

Jean-François Bordet heads up this family estate that can trace its roots in the village of Maligny back to 1590. The domaine now extends to 20 hectares on the right bank of the Serein where the rich kimmeridgian limestone soils give the wines the minerality so typical of great Chablis.

Jean-François built a new stainless steel winery for the 2014 harvest and quality continues to rise. His 2019s capture the beautiful, ripe flavours of the vintage whilst retaining excellent crispness and minerality. Jean-François Bordet

Chablis JFB2 192.00 133.00 Classic, unoaked Chablis. 6 Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 Domaine Roy Karine Roy

The Roy family have been vignerons in the village of Fontenay, just to the north of Chablis, for over 200 years. Today Claude Roy, together with his children David and Karine, farm 18 hectares of vines on the right bank of the River Serein. They are one of the largest owners of the grands crus including a magnificent 3.5 hectare plot in Bougros. They have only recently begun to bottle a significant proportion of their harvest, having previously sold a majority in bulk to the négociants. Overall, the domaine’s 2019s are crisper and more vibrant with higher acidity than the fatter, more opulent 2018s.

Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 7 Domaine Vincent Latour Vincent Latour

Vincent took over from his father Jean in 1998 and now owns 11 hectares of vineyards. A new cellar is currently being constructed where Vincent will be able to house his interesting mix of oak casks; as well as the more usual 228 and 600 litre barrels, Vincent has a range of 2,500 litre oak foudres which were made especially for him by the tonnellerie Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin. These larger barrels are especially useful in ripe years such as 2019 as the wines retain greater freshness when aged in larger volumes.

Meursault Cuvée Saint Jean VL1 480.00 373.00 Fermented and aged for 15 months in both 600 litre demi-muids and 2,500 litre foudres, this comes principally from two fine lieux-dits: Vireuils, & Crotots. Rich and spicy with honeyed fruit, just a hint of oak and fine, balancing acidity. Drink 2022-2024.

Meursault Les Pellans VL2 480.00 373.00 A fine lieu-dit on the border with Puligny-Montrachet, this has lovely depth and concentration. A full-bodied, rich style of Meursault but one that retains excellent bite and minerality. Drink 2022-2024.

Meursault Les Narvaux VL3 492.00 383.00 From high on the hillside above premier cru Genevrières. One of the very finest climats in the village and one that does particularly well in hot summers as the cooler air at higher altitude slows down the ripening process. Has excellent freshness and minerality. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault Les Grands Charrons VL4 504.00 393.00 From 60 year old vines in an east-facing vineyard just behind the domaine’s new cellar. Rich and powerful but with real class and finesse. Quintessential Meursault. Drink 2022-2025.

8 Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 Domaine Yves Boyer-Martenot

Vincent Boyer has taken over from his father Yves and made some important changes. All the wines are fermented and aged for 12 months as before but now the wines spend a second winter either in small (900-1800 litre) egg-shaped, cement vats or 900 litre oak foudres purchased from tonnellerie Vicard. The wines have a longer but slower élevage with less oxygen during the second winter which allows the wine to mature gently at low temperature and reduces the need for fining and filtration. Meursault Cuvée Fernand Boyer YB1 480.00 373.00 Named after Vincent’s grandfather, this splendid cuvée comes from five of Vincent’s best climats; Charrons, Pelles, Pellans, Moulin Landin and Pré de Manche. Rich and fruity with fine depth and concentration and excellent acidity on the finish. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault En L’Ormeau YB2 504.00 393.00 From vines adjacent to Vincent’s cellar on the edge of the village. The domaine’s oldest (60+ years) vines which give a magnificently rich wine with fine, honeyed fruit and a rich, succulent texture. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault Les Narvaux YB3 504.00 393.00 From one of Meursault’s finest climats, situated high on the slope just above premier cru Genevrières. Rich and powerful but with fine freshness and minerality thanks to the altitude. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes YB4 780.00 623.00 Meursault's best known premier cru. Lower on the slope and the warmer site and richer soil give a rich, opulent, honeyed wine. Always shows well when young but has the depth and balance to age well. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières YB5 852.00 683.00 Less opulent than Charmes with higher acidity and a closer-knit texture. Rich and elegant with an impressive, long finish. Drink 2022-2025.

Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières YB6 936.00 753.00 The domaine’s finest premier cru combining the richness of Charmes with the class of Genevrières. More backward at present but has fine depth and lovely harmony. Drink 2022-2026.

Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 9 Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau

After the generous (60hl/ha) 2018 harvest, 2019 was a much smaller crop (40-45hl/ha) as a result of poor flowering of the chardonnay and a dry summer that concentrated the juice in the berries. Jean-Baptiste harvested from 6th to 16th September and the juice was higher both in sugar and acidity than in 2018. The 2019s are some of the most intensely flavoured wines ever produced by the domaine and will be aged for between 12 and 18 months in 15-30% new oak barrels.

Bourgogne Côte d’Or Chardonnay MB1 264.00 193.00 Jean-Baptiste owns vines in both Meursault and Puligny and this is a blend (60% Meursault, 40% Puligny) of the two. Fermented and aged for twelve months in a mixture of 228 litres and 450 litre casks (15% new oak) from the local tonnellerie Damy. This is rich and honeyed yet retains fine vitality. In my opinion, much finer than a lot of Meursault that you find on the market. Drink 2021-2024.

Meursault Les Grands Charrons MB2 552.00 433.00 One of the very best Meursaults of the vintage from a fine east-facing climat just above the village. Vinified in 60% demi-muids and 40% pièces (of which 20% are new), this is a rich, creamy wine with beautiful, fresh fruit, fine structure and great intensity on the finish. Drink 2021-2025.

Meursault 1er Cru Blagny MB3 876.00 703.00 Planted in 1988, the vines in this splendid premier cru on the Meursault- Puligny border are now in their prime. With crisp acidity derived from the high altitude and chalky soil, this is a splendid, restrained Meursault, backward at the moment but with huge potential. Drink 2022-2027.

Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières MB4 972.00 783.00 A richer, riper, more open and opulent wine from this famous premier cru where Jean-Baptiste has two parcels planted in 1985 and 1989 by his father, Michel. Impressive, powerful structure with wonderful depth and concentration of fruit. Finishes crisp and long. Drink 2022-2027.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains MB5 972.00 783.00 Champs Gains is beautifully positioned above grand cru Chevalier- Montrachet. This is truly fine and elegant with sumptuous fruit and a fresh, silky texture. Drink 2022-2027.

10 Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 Domaine Henri Darnat

Henri Darnat and his wife Marion took over the family estate, originally established in the mid nineteenth century, in 2000. Since then, he has converted the estate to organic viticulture and established the domaine as one of the very finest in Meursault. For long an advocate of harvesting late in order to achieve full maturity, in 2019, Henri picked promptly and completed the harvest in 3 days. The resultant Meursault has fine minerality as well as ripe, concentrated fruit. Henri Darnat

Meursault Clos du Domaine HD1 444.00 343.00 A sumptuous Meursault but one that retains fine vitality and minerality. Henri has long bought his barrels from the tonnellerie Cavin in northern Burgundy and is a great fan of Vosges oak as its tight-grained structure is perfect for ageing his rich, intense wines. The Clos du Domaine was fermented and aged for 15 months in 30% new barrels and has a wonderful, rich, honeyed nose and impressive, concentrated fruit on the palate. The succulent texture is a perfect platform for the crisp, mineral finish. Drink 2021-2025.

Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 11 Domaine Alain Chavy Alain Chavy has been joined by his son Corentin at this splendid Puligny domaine, created in 2003 when Alain and his brother Jean-Louis went their separate ways. Alain has for long been one of the earliest to pick in the village but the recent, hot summers have obliged most of the other growers in Puligny to follow suit. In 2019 Alain completed the harvest in six days from 7th to 12th September. Yields were lower than in 2018 at 40 to 45 hl/ha and alcohol levels a little higher with similar levels of Alain and Corentin Chavy acidity. A fine range of well-structured, elegant wines that will develop well in bottle.

Puligny-Montrachet AC1 528.00 413.00 This is aged principally in larger (450 litre) demi-muids rather than the traditional 228 litre pièces in order to give less oak flavour and retain the maximum of vitality and freshness. Riper than the 2018 with a touch of honey on the nose and a rich, succulent texture. Drink 2022-2025. Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes AC2 564.00 443.00 A splendid climat on the Puligny-Meursault border adjoining Meursault 1er Cru Charmes. Alain is the major land-owner with 1.8 hectares of vines and has long vinified these grapes apart as they consistently give a wine close to premier cru quality. Intensely flavoured with fine breed and balance. Drink 2022-2025. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Clavoillons AC3 732.00 583.00 Clavoillons lies just below Folatières on the slope and makes a similarly fine, elegant wine. Starts discreetly but builds in the mouth to a long, intense finish. Drink 2022-2025. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières AC4 732.00 583.00 The domaine owns an impressive 1.4 ha of Folatières making it one of the most important owners in this well-known premier cru that produces some of the most opulent wines of Puligny. Alain’s 2019 also has fine acidity giving it a vibrancy that will allow it to age beautifully. Drink 2022-2026. Chevalier-Montrachet AC5 3780.00 3123.00 Alain produced just one barrel of this splendid grand cru. Fermented and aged in a 1 year old 228 litre pièce. Intensely-flavoured, concentrated wine which combines power and finesse. Drink 2022-2026. 12 Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy

Jean-Louis harvested relatively early in 2019 starting on 9th September. The low yields (35 hl/ha overall due to frost in the lower-lying vineyards and dryness on the slopes) resulted in concentrated juice, higher in both sugar and acidity than in 2018. 20% of the crop is now vinified in 350 litre demi-muids from Meursault-based tonnellerie Damy giving a lighter touch of oak and keeping the wines fresher and more elegant. This a lovely range of intensely flavoured wines that will be delicious when young but have the depth Jean-Louis Chavy and concentration to age well.

Puligny-Montrachet JLC1 456.00 353.00 From a number of parcels in various sectors of the village. Drink 2021-2025.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières JLC2 696.00 553.00 Jean-Louis’s finest premier cru. The vines were planted in the 1960s and their age bestows magnificent depth and elegance to the wine. Fermented and aged for 12 months in 25% new oak barrels, both 228 litre pièces and 350 litre demi-muids. Rich and aromatic with a wonderful opulence but also fine tension and minerality. Drink 2022-2025.

Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 13 Domaine Bzikot Père et Fils

Sylvain & Béatrice Bzikot (pronounced BZee-cot) own an impressive estate of 15 hectares in Puligny Montrachet. Sylvain’s grandfather arrived in Burgundy from Poland just before the Second World War and steadily built up the estate in the post-war years when land was plentiful and cheap. For a long time, most of the crop was sold in bulk to the Burgundy négociants but now all is bottled at the domaine. The estate’s delicious Bourgogne Chardonnay is made from vines within the commune of Puligny but just too low on the slope to qualify for the appellation. Sylvain Bzikot

Bourgogne Chardonnay BZ1 240.00 173.00 This is a brilliant example of this humble appellation; crisp and fresh but with real depth and concentration. The vines all lie within the commune of Puligny but from vines just below the village. Low yields in 2019 due to frost for the second year running. 60% of the crop was fermented in barrel with the balance in stainless steel vats. Drink 2021-2024.

Meursault BZ2 480.00 373.00 Sylvain only makes four barrels of this fine Meursault which is fermented and aged in 25% new oak. Rich and aromatic, this is a little fuller and rounder than the estate’s Puligny. Drink 2021-2025.

Puligny-Montrachet BZ3 504.00 393.00 The domaine owns no fewer than 17 plots of vines within the appellation from which Sylvain fashions this fine, elegant Puligny. Aged in 25% new oak barrels, this is rich and concentrated but has pure, vibrant fruit and shows great vitality. Top class, harmonious Puligny. Drink 2022-2026.

2019 is the tenth, and one of the best vintages that Jacques has made since the family domaine was split between him and his brother. Yields were low following frost at the end of April and poor weather during the flowering in May. The harvest started on 10th September, ten days later than in 2018, and was completed in 5 days. All the wines are barrel-fermented and aged for twelve months in small oak barrels followed by six months in stainless steel vats. With warm, sunny weather during the harvest, François started picking at 4am in order to avoid the heat of the day. 38 Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337 Domaine Jean-Marie Fourrier

Jean-Marie again left 20% of the stems in the fermentation vats as he had done for the first time in 2018. Yields were lower than in 2018 as a result of poor flowering. The effect, known as millerandage, gives lots of small berries, great for intensity of flavour but less good for quantity of juice. The result is a spectacular range of dense, concentrated wines. The domaine continues to buy all its corks having been heated to 40C and tested individually by being smelt by person before leaving the factory. This is a laborious and expensive process but does reduce the incidence of cork taint. Jean-Marie Fourrier Red Bin no. £ per case £ per case (12x75cl) (12x75cl) DP inc.
