[email protected] PAGE 2 | JIB SHEET Commodore’s Comments Nicole Ferry We are at the halfway into our year and I can’t help but look back and be wowed by all that our Board of Directors and members have accomplished. Just this past month, our Board approved the payment of an additional $153,200 to pay down our marina debt. Between the 2 loans at Compass Bank, we will have paid down principal by $426,925 in the past 25 months. Loan #1 dated May 8, 2017. $975,629 This is the loan that combined the old ballroom loan with the West Marina construction loan. Through the end of June 2019 we have paid-off $68,995 in principal. Loan #2 dated May 10, 2018. $650,000 This loan was for the East Marina construction (along with the $450,000 in Member Bonds and the $200,000+ cash the Club kicked-in). Through the end of June 2019 we will have paid the principal down by $357,970. We have met our membership cap of 725 and established a waiting list for prospective members that is now at 14 people deep. The new focus for our Membership Chair, R/C Tom Pace and our Membership Liaisons, Dean Kirschner and Tiffany Meece, will be to engage our current membership. Sailing Director César Travado, Fleet Captain Hal Smith and Rear Commodore Tom Pace have greatly increased the interest in sailing among our members. We have had four Kids Sailing Camps, two Adult Sailing Camps, and weekly Thursday Night Racing. Sailing, whether for fun or racing, is clearly on the rise at PYC! By the way, if you haven’t registered for Sailing Camp, it’s not too late! We have brochures at the Club or you can find out more information on our website, pensacolayachtclub.org or our Facebook page, as well. We have had successful regattas whether we are hosting or traveling to compete. Our sailors have competed in Panama City, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Atlanta, Georgia; and in Gulfport, Mississippi. I can’t fail to mention our young “sailing rock star,” Gil Hackel. He will sail in the Youth Worlds this month in Antigua. Wish him luck! Our Clubhouse, I hope you’ve noticed, has been rejuvenated with the new carpet and paint. You will notice our historical pictures and awards have been placed in our Grill Room, once again. A huge “thank you” to Cynthia Cannon, Bruce McCalpin, and Tip McCalpin for donating their time to making our yacht club appeal to not only the seasoned members, but also to our new ones. Vice Commodore Johnny Smith is currently working with the landscape design company that we have hired to update the entryways. More on the horizon to come, we aren’t finished yet! Club Historian Dave Hoffman is creating a rotating historical display. It will be at the foot of the stairs in the main Clubhouse! Last thing, in case you missed it, at long last we have a poolside bar (!) that is capable of serving drinks and also allows you to order food. Yeah!! My hope is that parents won’t have to get the kids out of the pool, dry them off, and get them dressed to go into the Clubhouse. Any feedback you can give about this new option, don’t hesitate to call/text me. For that matter, if you think of a new idea that would benefit the Club, please do the same. While Pensacola has been voted one of the best places to live, Pensacola Yacht Club is one of the best places to BE! Again, hoping your summer is filled with sunshine and salt!

PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Junior Sailor and Humanitarian Claire Perez This month we focus on one of our younger members, Claire Perez. Claire’s parents are Nick and Leslie Perez, members of PYC. Claire is on our Junior Sailing Team along with her brother, Emmett. Claire has been placing in the regattas this year, but “off the water,” she is also giving back to our community. She has led a movement to give $2,000 worth of travel vouchers, patient hospitality bags, and Higgs Bears to the Children’s Scoliosis Foundation and Nemours Hospital. By the way, Claire is only ten-years-old! We are so proud of you!

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith Club Improvements: • At the last Board of Directors Meeting, we authorized General Manager Jim Warwick to proceed with plans to resurface the parking lot and add parking stripes for an expanded guest parking lot. This will take pressure off the member’s lot. We received two nearly identical bids, and Mr. Warwick was authorized to select the one he thought would do the best job in a timely manner. By the time you read this, he will have met with the contractor and a tentative beginning date for the work will have been established. • On Monday, June 10th three past Commodores and several other volunteers including me, assisted the interior decorators when they re-hung a number of our historical racing trophies, plaques, awards and member boat photos. We look forward to their return to finish their work. • Your Commodore, Vice Commodore and General Manager met with a local landscaping company, and after hearing their proposal, hired them to perform beautification, including removal of some of the shrubs, planting new flowers and other work around the two member entrances (entrances from the member parking lot and the back porch entrance). You should begin to see a significant difference soon and I think everyone will be pleased. Club “Additions to the Family” • If you happen to notice a new van parked near the Junior Sailing storage areas, it belongs to PYC! It was purchased to provide transportation for our sailors to out-of-town regattas, and it will also tow a race committee support boat when needed. • The new race committee boat “Persistence” has arrived and is at Pensacola Shipyard. Thanks again to the delivery crew of Past Commodore Ron Bruce, Captain Bob Kriegel and Captain Ken Branch (KB) who brought the boat up from Tarpon Springs. We are accepting bids for repair work that we knew needed to be performed before we bought the boat in partnership with the Satori Foundation. The cost of these repairs was reflected in the purchase price. We expect to award the repair contract to one of the contractors very soon and by the time you read this, work will have begun. Fleet Captain Hal Smith and Past Commodore John Matthews are working on a plan to rig the boat so that race committee flags can be adequately displayed. A six-person committee consisting of three PYC members and three Satori Foundation members (also PYC members) has been selected as a “Naming Committee.” All members who are interested in sharing their ideas about a name change are welcome to submit your preference after which a new name, if any, will be selected. Further details about this will be forthcoming. Our New Family Members

Recieving a “beauty treatment” at the Shipyard PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET Rear Commodore’s Comments Tom Pace If any of you have read my past articles for this Jib Sheet, you know I am normally very positive and upbeat about our Club … sooner or later, that has to come to an end, but … NOT NOW !!! As I write this, I am still in the happy of running my boat back from Gulfport and the GYA Challenge Cup, the annual sail-racing challenge where four boats of different types compete for individual and overall scores for their respective yacht clubs. In recent years, our sailors went to this event - 100 nautical miles to our west - just on their own, without organized support from non-racing members. This year, Commodore Ferry raced in the event, and brought her husband Chris, kids, and in-laws for support. David Johnson (DJ) and I ran my 38’ center console down to be able to store changes of sails, water and Gatorade for the race teams, and to act as “mother ship” to our RIB (rigid inflatable boat) that was run by Karen and Charles Harp. This not only looked like we were making an effort, but indicated that the PYC support of our sailors is strong and improving all the time. One observer referred to us, not as mere support, but as a PROGRAM! True, it did take just a “couple” of gallons to run my 15,000 lb. boat at 40 mph for those 200 miles, but worth every single drop to support our race teams ! Our sailors did well, with Tony’s boat “Phoenix,” with Hunter Riddle aboard, taking 3rd Overall in Class, and really mixing it up aggressively throughout the regatta. Paul and Rachael Gillette’s “Atlantic Union” sailed well and fast, and our team, along with Club boat “Farvegnugen,” was able to battle for leads on the course. They are steadily moving up the leaderboards. The is not the last of our Club’s races this year, and we are only getting better! Next July we will be hosting the US Sailing Youth Nationals, which is a qualifying regatta for the World Championship. As such, we will once again see some of the USA’s best young sailors racing out of PYC. Some of our juniors and youth sailors have marked that event as incentive to improve their sailing in order to compete, and that is an exciting testament to Sailing Director César Travado and his work this past year. César will also be racing for PYC as he did in Gulfport, and we will continue to support his great efforts! For now, we get to focus on the Junior Olympic Festival Regatta June 29-30 and the Flying Scot North American Championship July 13-18. Both will be small in fleet size compared to last year’s Opti Nationals and next year’s US Youth Championship, but will be a great opportunity for any and all to help us out, participate, or just hang around and meet some new visitors and watch the racing. Your membership is stopped at 725 members, and we are building a quality waiting list of those wanting to join PYC. As any current members decide to resign from the Club, your Board of Directors will bring our members-in-waiting up to active status, as space allows. We plan to invite these fine people to select events during the months to keep their interest in PYC at a high level, and if any of you have friends on that list, please consider bringing them to the Club as your guest sometimes. We can help you to be involved in membership and entertaining those who will soon join the Club. We are seeing more adults taking sailing lessons in the late afternoon with Coach César. Also, the Thursday Night (Beer Can) Races, fun and short sailing courses on the Bay, are adding more people all the time. Your Club is being maintained by an exceptional staff and managers, and she looks amazing as we rocket into summer. The Club is ahead of our payment schedule, with the plan going forward to keep a hard press on our expenses, spend prudently within our budgets, and to maintain the level of enjoyment for our members. (See Commodore’s article.) As always, please find me around the Club, or text me with any thoughts or questions … we are making strides by leaps and bounds, and always need to hear everyone’s impressions and ideas!! That negative and downbeat attitude will have to wait another month, because right now it is nothing but smiles and good things ahead for PYC !!! ALOHA - Tom

The Commodore and I encourage you to take time to read the descriptions and gain some appreciation of our maritime heritage. The July display will feature the racing cannon presented to PYC in 1915 by the Southern Yacht Club. This now 104 year- old gun was given in appreciation for our hospitality at the end of the annual Garic Cup race from New Orleans to Pensacola.

PAGE 9 | JIB SHEET Fleet Captain’s Report Hal Smith This month highlights many PYC sailors who have practiced, trained, invested in sails and gear, and traveled to GYA regattas representing PYC. Many thanks go to Hunter Riddle who had a lonely job for a while, trying to recruit enough PYC sailors to compete. Most of the reports that follow are from Hunter and show the success he has now had, with others’ help, to assemble Team PYC for GYA regattas. Thanks to Rachael and Paul Gillette, Claire Rees, Susan McKinnon, Tom Pace and more who have recruited and supported the expanded the PYC sailing team. It has been some time since we could credit so many different PYC sailors at one time. Please note the article spotlighting the return of the Fish Boats through the leadership of Neil McMillan, DJ Johnson and Hunter Riddle. There are a wide variety of opportunities, including one for you! CAPDEVIELLE REGATTA UPDATE The Capdevielle Regatta is actually composed of 4 regattas. These are sailed in the Vipers, which is a complicated and exciting sportboat. There are 33 clubs in GYA, many of whom do not participate. PYC is in 5th place for the Capdevielle series so far participating in three out of 4 regattas. We are also in 1st place in the Challenger series (for those GYA clubs that did not finish in the top 8 clubs last year). The final regatta in the series will be in Fort Walton on July 6th. Following is a description of each of the first three regattas. 5/4-5 Spring Regatta: Buccaneer Yacht Club Crew: Mike Levert, Brandon Addison, Hunter Riddle, Zack Smith Results report: Squalls on Saturday and zero wind on Sunday. We only sailed in one race out of three scheduled races– 9th (last) place for the regatta. In spite of a disappointing result, we know the specific work to be done. 5/18-19 Opening Regatta: Southern YC Crew: Mike Levert, Brandon Addison, Hunter Riddle Results report: Terrific on-site support from Commodore Ferry. It was very on Saturday – only got 2 races. No races on Sunday – more squalls. Mike drove to a 3rd and 4th, placing 3rd overall for the regatta. Much better results after working on identified things! 6/1-2 Candler Regatta: St. Andrews Bay YC – Panama City Crew: Charlie Harp, Brandon Addison, Hunter Riddle, Helen Welsh Results report: Enthusiastic on-site support from R/C Tom Pace. It was perfect sailing conditions both days. We won a race, first around every mark. 2nd around the first mark twice. Still ended up 5th out of 8, which was frustrating, but proved we have what it takes to be successful. Being consistent is what comes next and involves more work. History of PYC Participation in the Capedevielle Series: Hunter Riddle was our primary PYC sailor at first, but he has successfully recruited several crew and skipper options for this year. Some of those names appear in the crew list above. We used to have multiple skipper/crew combinations who represented PYC in the Flying Scots. Now that Vipers are used, we have two that are to be used for competition. One is PYC’s and the other belongs to the Satori Foundation. We are anxious to have multiple PYC teams competing in the Capdevielle for PYC, as we used to in the age of Flying Scots. Our Sailing Director, César Travado, is a huge asset for PYC to help train and build competitive skills for PYC members. If you want to try out for Viper team racing, please contact Hunter Riddle ([email protected]) or Cesar ([email protected]) to get on the list and schedule some practice time. Again, the next race is July 6th in Fort Walton. A cheering section is welcomed! FISH BOATS ARE BACK! To represent PYC in the historic 2020 Lipton Cup, Neil McMillan has been restoring his classic Fish Boat. On a recent Thursday evening, Neil, DJ Johnson and Hunter Riddle, each sailed his Fish Boat. The 3 boats tuned against each other as preparations began to re-win the Lipton Cup. This is an important piece of PYC and GYA history. Sir Thomas Lipton was a huge supporter of competitive sailing. One-hundred-years ago next year, the Lipton Cup was founded as a friendly sailing competition between the GYA clubs. There were not many in those days! The Fish Boat, designed and created here, was used for the Lipton Regatta, which was hosted by Southern Yacht Club. The regatta was won by Pensacola Yacht Club, thus starting 100 years of “trash talk” at the bars! There will be a special competition next year for the centennial celebration at SYC, sailed in Fish Boats between SYC and PYC. We plan for history to repeat itself. Please support and encourage these intrepid mariners! Left: Lovely sight - Fish Boats on the Bay!

PAGE 10 | JIB SHEET CHALLENGE CUP – GULFPORT, MS. – June 15-16 PYC had entries in all classes for the first time in several years! Only 8 clubs of the 33 GYA clubs had teams compete, and only 4 clubs had teams compete in all classes with PYC being one. The team overall results are still being determined, but the PYC sailors had awesome on-the-water cheering from Tom Pace, DJ Johnson and others who were definitely 1st Place in “Club Support”! Being on site, especially on the water and cheering for the PYC team, is a ton of fun and inspires our sailors who put in so much hard work. Join the party! Following are the results from each class: CLASS A: “Atlantic Union” 6th place Skippers Paul & Rachael Gillette Crew Jennifer Glossinger, Nicole Ferry, Linda Thompson, Dave Oerting, Nate Simonson, Jake McLeod, Charlotte Ferry, Becca Marcus*, Denny Blume*, Mike Pedersen*, Erik Petersen*, Lincoln Cox*, Dwight Rea* (sailed with 12 each day with rotating crew as available)

CLASS B: “FAHRVERGNUGEN” 6th place Skipper Frank Gazioch Crew Tracy Gazioch, Rick Zern, Leanne Pickering, Helen Johnson*

CLASS C: “White Snake” – PYC Viper 5th place Skipper Mike Levert Crew Andrew McMillan, César Travado

CLASS D: “Phoenix” 3rd place Skipper Hunter Riddle Crew Tony Nichols, Brandon Addison, Ted Gremann*, LoDee Catrell* * Non-PYC Members Note: The regatta was scored with the new ORR-EZ rating system. If the traditional PHRF rating system had been used, “Atlantic Union” and “White Snake” would have finished 3rd overall. Discussions continue regarding the GYA adoption of the ORR-EZ rating system.

Of those 34 boats, 4 were PYC boats including: Larry Cost, “TraSea,” Beneteau 473; Mike Patterson, “Belafonte,” 31; Scott and John Mathis, “Forerunner,” J105; and Rachael and Paul Gillette, “Atlantic Union,” Beneteau 44.7 SD. Congratulations to all who participated, with special recognition to Mike Patterson who was the first boat to finish the course and to Scott and John Mathis, who won 2nd in Class! The PYC staff did another excellent job of welcoming the fleet with hospitality and Bushwackers! Also deserving huge credit is Sean Hickey, for organizing the PYC end of this event and to Mike and Patty Thomas for anchoring “Miss Jody” in the entrance channel all night long plus Saturday morning to be the finish line and to greet the sailors to Pensacola.

Above: Dead tired racers Right: Dead racers THURSDAY EVENING RACING IS SPECIAL! Summer sailing on Pensacola Bay is what many people dream about. You can live the dream. The water is warm, and the sun stays out long enough to enjoy a couple of hours of sailing in perfect breezes. We meet on the beach with your favorite launchable boat, and we sail around the channel markers. Be ready to start at 5:30 pm. Juniors and adults will be competing in your own // etc., or check with Sailing Director César, to see if a Club boat is available. Afterwards, we gather for hamburgers and beer/soda for only $0.00/person. That is not a mistake! The food is FREE for those who sail and help, but the fellowship is priceless. Thanks to PYC Secretary Steven Orr for donating the food for us. We have been enjoying a great start to this year.

Great showing for Thursday Night Sailing - 20 Sailors! Laser, Hobie, Sunfish, Optimist, & Venture! “All in the family”!

JOIN THE RACE COMMITTEE FUN! We have several different regattas scheduled to make 2019 an exciting and interesting year. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on a race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” Contact our Race Committee Chairman, Bob Madden: [email protected], and he will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you. Bob is also our chief scorer this year working with Maryanne, DO, César, and others who have done this before. This will keep one person from having to do this all of the time. You might like to help with scoring and be the first to know who won! Similarly, Richard Brent is our judge/protest chairman (in addition to being PRO for some regattas) to be sure we have appropriately qualified judges for the level of event being hosted. We are fortunate to have Charlie Harp, with his considerable experience, to often be our head judge and César Travado, our Sailing Director, to help as needed.

PAGE 12 | JIB SHEET A SPECIAL RC OPPORTUNITY IS TO BE A REGATTA CHAIRPERSON Most people naturally know how to party, and this is a great way to be that “PARTY PERSON.” The chairperson will promote the regatta while planning a special and fun event. The race committee will, of course, be completely managed by the RC Chair, and Sally Smith will get the trophies. The NOR’s and SI’s are already written. This is fun, and it gets you involved with the most exciting side of the Club. Ask the Fleet Captain for details and opportunities.

2019 OFFSHORE RACE/RENDEZVOUS REGATTA ANNOUNCED Offshore Regatta Chairmen DJ Johnson and Mike Patterson announced there will be a domestic offshore race/rally, to start November 1, from Pensacola YC to St. Petersburg YC. There will be monohull and fleets. Within each fleet, there will be a racing and a cruising division determined by the number of registrations. In addition, there will be a “Predicted Log” event for powerboats. Powerboaters, this is your chance to participate in the special fun and adventure enjoyed by the sailors who annually migrate to foreign shores. This time there is no need for getting out your passports, getting visas, or registering with the US Coast Guard. The legal work is much simpler going to another domestic port. Members are even encouraged to drive to the gathering party in St. Pete, which is something not possible in Cuba or Isla Mujeres. Watch for a NOR to be posted soon on our PYC website.

ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAIL Our new RS Ventures are rigged and ready-to-go. They are fantastic boats for adults learning to sail. They are fun, responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for (C420’s, Lasers, Sunfish, windsurfing) as well as larger keelboats such as the Satori Foundation’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind.” If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary.

Day 2: Already sailing independently!

2019 FLYING SCOT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP The Pensacola Yacht Club team wants Flying Scots to come from all over North America to enjoy the “South’s Finest Yacht Club.” Many Flying Scot sailors have been to Pensacola before, but not since we cleared off the eastern five acres of our waterfront... . not since the new sailing center was built, not since the new launching ramp and upgraded hoist were completed and not since our marina renovations were finished last Spring. Discover the magic of racing on Pensacola Bay. The link for on-line registration and access to the Notice of Race (NOR) is accessible on Regatta Network. Entry fee is $475. “This is every young sailor’s chance to get experience at the 2020 national championship venue, since we are hosting the top youth sailors in America for the 2020 US Sailing Youth National Championship,” (Fleet Captain Hal Smith). “We want all Flying Scot Sailors to experience Pensacola. Sailing on Pensacola Bay is magical.” (Chairman Tom Pace) PYC is proud to have hosted the Flying Scot North American Championships in ‘80, ‘93, & ‘02! Catch the magic in Pensacola... the Flying Scot North American Championship July 13-18, 2019. Contact Talbot Wilson: [email protected] 850-217-7138

COMING SOON - JULY/AUGUST PYC EVENTS 7/12-14 Blue Angels Raft Up in Lil’ Sabine (see Cruisers Corner, page 15) 7/13-18 Flying Scot North American Championship 8/24 Preemie Cup Regatta PAGE 13 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler May Raft Up - Big Sabine The weather for the May raft up could not have been better. We enjoyed clear skies, warm sun, cool breezes, and beautiful water. Big Sabine was the destination and several boats opted to start the weekend on Friday. This month’s host, Bob Holmes, was up early on Saturday to get the grill going on the beach. PYC provided the chicken and Bob provided the grilling expertise for an excellent lunch. Boats continued to arrive throughout the afternoon until over a dozen boats had gathered at the anchorage. Those who couldn’t arrive in time for lunch enjoyed the delicious leftover chicken later in the day. When the attendees all gathered on the beach for the usual Mimosas/Bloody Mary Brunch they were surprised by awards for some. An award was given for elapsed time of travel, best side dish and best breakfast dish. Congratulations to all the winners. Many thanks to Bob for hosting this fun weekend.

June Raft Up - Chuck & Peg Minnich’s in Bayou Chico The June raft up was a little bit different than most raft ups have been. Peg and Chuck Minnich were hosts for the weekend and were having issues with their boat. Haven’t we all had boat issues at one time or another! Chuck and Peg did not want to shirk the duties for which they had volunteered so they opened their home on the bayou. Boats were welcome to anchor behind their house in Bayou Chico or tie alongside their dock. Their screened porch and open patio provided a perfect spot to enjoy pulled pork supplied by PYC and all the sides, salads, and desserts you can imagine. Forty people enjoyed the cool breeze and beautiful view as the full moon rose over the bayou. Twenty people reassembled on Sunday morning for our usual Raft-Up Brunch. Thank you, Chuck and Peg for a great weekend!
