R908_P7 Bob Bennett Why do you wish to carry out this role? I have benefited from the National Health Service thoughout my life and have seen many changes for the better. I want to be involved in what could be a most exciting future which will help all concerned in the supply of services and care. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? I have had experience as an Independant Manager and believe I can bring this experience to this position. I am a good communicator, team player, motivator leader and decision maker and enjoy responsibility. I embrace change but not change for change sake, and am excited at the chance to be involved in this role. Any other information that you feel is relevant: I already do voluntary work in the local community and am therefore familiar with the requirements of the area. Jacob Butterly Why do you wish to carry out this role? I have been a service user at the trust several times over the past 10 years. I have a very keen interest in the NHS, strongly support the principles of a publicly funded universal healthcare system and would like to contribute to the decision-making of the local healthcare trust to ensure the best possible service for patients in Bristol. As a student studying cellular and molecular medicine at the , I also have a keen interest in public health issues affecting the population. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? As a member of the Youth Council at the trust, I attend meetings and events aimed at improving services for young people in Bristol. As a young person and service user, I have experience of frontline services from this perspective. However, having grandparents, parents and family friends who have used a broad range of services provided by the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, I have a good awareness of issues affecting the wider population. Any other information that you feel is relevant: I have worked in a statutory body (the probation service). This has given me an awareness of confidentiality and experience in providing front-line services. In keeping with my desire to make a voluntary contribution to society, I have also worked as a volunteer for Oxfam. 2 Ken Cockrell Why do you wish to carry out this role? I believe the NHS to be the most important of all Government-funded services available to us in the UK and must be protected. As a user of our local hospitals I realize that the NHS ethos must upheld – it is vital to our community. As a governor I would have the opportunity to use my wide management experience and skills in working both with Trust members and hospital management to ensure that, as a minimum, the scope and quality of services provided by our local hospitals is maintained and, where appropriate, expanded and improved. I would also like to achieve a large increase in Trust membership (and therefore a group that is more representative of those who use our hospitals) and determine from our members what they need and expect from these local services. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? Thirty years of experience in a range of management posts in large public sector organizations and private companies have equipped me with a broad range of management experience and skills including business planning, human resources, market research, engineering management etc. I am a specialist in strategic planning and have done some teaching in university business schools. My academic qualifications are broad-ranging and include a Masters Degree in management (MBA). Any other information that you feel is relevant: Over the past 25 years I have had personal experience of treatment in Bristol hospitals and, currently, as a patient receiving regular out-patient treatment, I will be able to bring understanding and empathy to my role as governor. 3 Keith Jones Why do you wish to carry out this role? When my Sister died of cancer, aged 4, in 1942, there was no National Health Service. When my Mother died of cancer in 1996, the care she received from the NHS was good. The good service needs to be continued, and improved where possible, by training and efficient use of funds. I am registered disabled because I have a condition called Dystonia, a muscular movement disorder. I have been treated well by my GP and the local hospital. From a disabled person’s perspective, I believe my input as a member of the council would be invaluable. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? I was apprenticed as a pattern maker with British Aerospace, and later a model maker in the wind tunnel at Filton for 43 years. After retirement in 1990, I took on the following voluntary work:- 1) I was elected to serve on the Companies Consultative Committee representing 8,000 pensioners in the South West. 2) I organised the transportation of stroke patients to attend the Hospital greenhouse for gardening therapy, five afternoons a week. 3) I was a volunteer driver for St. Peter’s Hospice. 4) I served as a Governor at Black Horse School. 5) I was a Parish councillor at Mangotsfield. Skills required to do the above included patience, caring and an ability to communicate. Any other information that you feel is relevant: Before I became disabled I worked for Council as a backup for escorting special needs children on the school buses. I also worked as a Lay Assessor accompanying the Council’s Inspector on visits to care homes. 4 Bill Payne Why do you wish to carry out this role? I have always felt it is important that the users of our health services should have a voice in how those services are provided and being a member of the UHB Membership Council gives us that opportunity. Being a critical friend and helping the Trust build and maintain first class patient services is how I see the role of a Council member. As a life long user of our health service, being a member of the Council would also afford me a chance to give something back to the health service. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? In 2008-09 I represented Bristol City Council on the Membership Council. I have a wide knowledge of the health service and been actively involved in the voluntary sector for many years; all this experience I would bring to the Board. As a patient representative I have been involved in the regional commissioning of haemophilia services as well as being a Vice Chair and Trustee of the Haemophilia Society. As a tutor for the Expert Patient Programme I have run self-help courses for people with chronic health problems Any other information that you feel is relevant: As a member of the Council I would be interested in seeing how the Trust can improve the in-patient experience of disabled and vulnerable people who’s needs can be complex and difficult to manage. Prof. John Steeds Why do you wish to carry out this role? I want to assist the Trust in providing high quality care to patients. With the financial restraints that are anticipated it is likely to be a critical period for the allocation of resources and so the effectiveness of the work of the Trust will be particularly important. What skills do you feel you bring to this role? • My previous experience as the Head of the Physics Department at Bristol University and as the creator and first Director of the Interface Analysis Centre involved dealing successfully with complex organisational structures whilst attending to the individual needs of a diverse body of staff and students. • I have a record of successful campaigning for projects that I am committed to. I was a champion on behalf of the Universities of Bath, Bristol and UWE for the Science Park at Emersons Green which is to be opened formally this March, at last, after more than 20 years of setbacks. I was also involved in fund-raising for the 1997 Festival of the Sea, a project that involved the construction of a replica of John Cabot’s ship, the Matthew. Any other information that you feel is relevant: • As a patient, I have had experience of the BRI, the Eye Hospital, the Dental Hospital, the Oncology Centre and the General Hospital. • I have a daughter who is a consultant at Frenchay Hospital, having previously worked in each of the University Hospitals Bristol. • As a retired person I have time to give to this activity.
