Transitional environments of the lower Maastrichtian South-Pyrenean Basin 301 (Catalonia, Spain): The Fumanya Member tidal flat iii A������� / R���� Abstract The terrestrial Campanian/Maastrichtian geological and paleontological record from southwestern Europe is one of the best outside North America to study the last 15 milion years previous to the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. The narrative of the last dinosaur communities from the Ibero-Armorican Island (European Archipelago) is addressed by studying their occurrences, associated paleoenvironments and magnetostratigraphic dating. Such integrated works in the Mesozoic portion of the Tremp Group (South-Pyrenean Basin) includes the study of footprints of the ichnogenus Hadrosauropodus, linked to hadrosaur dinosaurs. These tracks are abundant in the fluvial coastal plains of the upper Maastrichtian. In addition to the fluvial ecosystem, hadrosaurs also colonized the coastal environment (e.g. lagoons), as reveals the L’Espinau site (amongst other localities). In contrast, sauropods were dominant in the Campanian and the lower Maastrichtian coastal and inland environments of the region, but were still present in those settings until the uppermost Maastrichtian, as evidenced by bones, eggshell and tracks, and skin impressions. However, their remains were much scarcer than those of hadrosaurs at this age. The dinosaur faunal succession of southwestern Europe has been improved by means of: 1) habitat understanding, 2) dating and integrating the Aude record (northern Pyrenees), 3) improving of the age calibration of the Isona sector (southern Pyrenees), and 4) integrationg of the Campanian- Maastrichtian dinosaur fossil record from the rest of France, Spain and Portugal (Provence and Iberian areas). Dating refinements permit a new model for the Maastrichtian dinosaur faunal succession. Instead of a rapid faunal shift from titanosaurian-dominated herbivorous assemblages to hadrosaur-dominated communities around the early-late Maastrichtian boundary, the achieved data show that the extinction of major clades and the apparition of new ones took place diachronously and was not time coincident. On the contrary, a coexistence period of about two milion years between older and newer Ibero-Armorican dinosaur inhabitants have been identified. This dinosaur turnover was not the response to environmental changes, but probably to faunal migration episodes after geographical barriers disappeared. 3 Resum El registre geològic i paleontològic del Campanià i Maastrichtià del sud-oest europeu ofereix una de les millors oportunitats per estudiar els darrers 15 milions d’anys abans de l’extinció del Cretaci- Paleogen més enllà del registre de Nord Amèrica. En aquesta tesi doctoral s’ha estudiat i caracteritzat el registre de dinosaures i els seus paleoambients associats, i s’han datat successions sedimentàries mitjançant magnetostratigrafia amb l’objectiu d’aprofundir en el coneixement sobre les darreres comunitats de dinosaures de l’illa Ibero-Armoricana de l’Arxipèlag europeu. Els treballs integrats realitzats a la part mesozoica del Grup Tremp (Conca sud-pirinenca) inclouen l’estudi de les petjades de l’icnogènere Hadrosauropodus, associat a dinosaures hadrosaures. Aquestes empremtes són molt abundants en les planes costaneres fluvials del Maastrichtià superior. A més de l’ambient fluvial, els hadrosaures també van colonitzar l’ecosistema costaner (per exemple llacunes), tal com mostra el jaciment de L’Espinau, entre d’altres localitats. Per contra, els sauròpodes van ser dominants en els ambients costaners i continentals de la regió durant el Campanià i el Maastrichtià inferior, tot i que van persistir fins el Maastrichtià terminal tal i com evidencia el seu registre osteològic, oològic i de petjades, incloent-hi impressions de pell. Amb tot, les seves restes fòssils són molt més escasses que les d’hadrosaure en aquesta

Brusatte3, Philip J. Currie4 & Àngel Galobart1,2 A characteristic fauna of dinosaurs and other vertebrates inhabited the end‑Cretaceous European archipelago, some of which were dwarves or had other unusual features likely related to their insular habitats. Little is known, however, about the contemporary theropod dinosaurs, as they are represented mostly by teeth or other fragmentary fossils. A new isolated theropod metatarsal II, from the latest Maastrichtian of Spain (within 200,000 years of the mass extinction) may represent a jinfengopterygine troodontid, the frst reported from Europe. Comparisons with other theropods and phylogenetic analyses reveal an autapomorphic foramen that distinguishes it from all other troodontids, supporting its identifcation as a new genus and species, Tamarro insperatus. Bone histology shows that it was an actively growing subadult when it died but may have had a growth pattern in which it grew rapidly in early ontogeny and attained a subadult size quickly. We hypothesize that it could have migrated from Asia to reach the Ibero‑Armorican island no later than Cenomanian or during the Maastrichtian dispersal events. During the latest Cretaceous (ca. 77–66 million years ago) in the run-up to the end-Cretaceous mass extinc- tion, Europe was a series of islands populated by diverse and distinctive communities of dinosaurs and other vertebrates. Many of these animals exhibited peculiar features that may have been generated by lack of space and resources in their insular habitats.

The realized value of powdered eggs versus fresh eggs is extensive. Dried eggs are more cost- effective, occupy less storage space, have a reduced weight per volume, and eliminate the need for refrigeration. When stored properly, powdered eggs exhibit a shelf-life of 5 to 10 years; certain products such as freeze-dried eggs exhibit a shelf-life of up to 25 years. There is a wide range of dried egg products, including whole egg pow- der with and without sugar, egg yolk powder, and egg white powder. The process to manufacture egg powder is performed in specialized processing plants. The typical process starts with the breaking of eggs, followed by the separation of albu- men (egg white), yolk, and eggshell. The albumen may be processed independently for the production of egg white powder, in which the albumen liquid undergoes filtration, chilling at approximately 4°C, fermentation to remove glucose, and spray drying before packaging. Fermentation of albumen liquid is necessary as glucose may react with amino acids during the spray drying process, in which a brown color may be produced. Whole egg powder and egg yolk powder are processed by chilling the liquid at approximately 4°C, dry pasteuriz- ing at temperatures around 64 to 70°C for short periods of time to remove bacteria, and subsequently spray drying prior to final packaging.

Latest Cretaceous deposits are cropping out in various localities of the Hațeg basin (Romania). Among these localities Pui is of peculiar interest, being the southeastern most one where Maastrichtian fluvial deposits are exposed. These terrestrial deposits are represented mainly by red beds, which yielded since the end of the 19th century, rich vertebrate assemblages. From a channel fill block discovered ex situ, a diverse fossil vertebrate assemblage was recovered (turtles, crocodilians, pterosaurs, and various herbivore and carnivore dinosaurs). This study is focused on the fossil taxa collected from this block and their fossilization processes. Keywords: latest Cretaceous, fluvial deposits, vertebrates, Hațeg basin, Romania. Rezumat. Câteva vertebrate maastrichtiene din depozite de canal fluvial de la Pui (Bazinul Hațeg). Depozite cretacic terminale aflorează în varii localități din Bazinul Hațeg (România). Dintre acestea, Pui este localizată în extremitatea sud-estică a bazinului, unde apar la zi depozite fluviale maastrichtiene. Aceste depozite sunt dominate de red beds, din care au fost colectate, încă de la finele secolului XIX, bogate asociații de vertebrate fosile. Dintr-un bloc cu umplutură de canal descoperit ex situ a fost extrasă o asociație diversă de vertebrate fosile (țestoase, crocodili, pterosauri și variați dinozauri erbivori și carnivori).
