Henry Chapman Mercer Fact Sheet Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) a noted tile-maker, archaeologist, antiquarian, artist and writer, was a leader in the turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts Movement. ● Henry Chapman Mercer was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1856 and died at his home, Fonthill, in Doylestown in 1930. ● After graduating from Harvard in 1879, he was one of the founding members of The Bucks County Historical Society in 1880. ● He studied law at The University of Pennsylvania and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar. Mercer never practiced law but turned his interests towards a career in pre-historic archaeology. ● From 1894 to 1897, Mercer was Curator of American and Pre-historic Archaeology at The University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia. ● As an archaeologist, he conducted site excavations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, and in the Ohio, Delaware, and Tennessee River valleys. ● In 1897, Mercer became interested in and began collecting "above ground" archaeological evidence of pre-industrial America. ● In searching out old Pennsylvania German pottery for his collection, Mercer developed a keen interest in the craft. By 1899 he was producing architectural tiles that became world famous. ● At fifty-two Mercer began building the first of three concrete structures: Fonthill, 1908-10, his home; the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, 1910-12, his tile factory; and The Mercer Museum, 1913-16, which housed his collection of early American artifacts. ● Mercer authored Ancient Carpenters Tools and The Bible In Iron. ● Fond of animals and birds, Mercer developed a large arboretum with plants native to Pennsylvania on the grounds of Fonthill. -

Michener Art Museum and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works will offer a day of free admission in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Mercer Museum. The collaborative Doylestown Museums’ Free Day will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Free parking will be available at Fonthill Park and free shuttle service, courtesy of Bucks County Transport will take visitors between Fonthill Park and the Doylestown Cultural District. In the Doylestown Cultural District, visitors can explore the Mercer Museum and James A. Michener Art Museum. The Mercer Museum, a six-story concrete castle opened a century ago by collector and tile-maker, Henry Mercer features his amazing collection of pre-Industrial tools of early America. Visitor can take self-guided tours of the Mercer Museum to see objects like an antique fire engine, horse drawn carriages and more, hanging from different surfaces of the museum, or densely packed in rooms and alcoves. Visitors can also view an eclectic mix of artifacts and memorabilia in the Mercer’s latest exhibition, Long May She Wave: A Graphic History of the American Flag. The exhibit looks at the inventive graphic interpretations of the American Flag as seen in artifacts including Civil War Era flags, Native American moccasins, campaign buttons and children’s toys. -

Cover Memo DATE: MAY 17, 2018 TO: PHILADELPHIA HISTORIC PRESERVATION TASK FORCE FROM: NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION RE: HISTORIC PRESERVATION & BUILDING REUSE: BEST PRACTICES RESEARCH Dear Task Force Members: As Technical Advisor to the Mayor Kenney’s Historic Preservation Task Force, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is providing the attached revised summaries of a select group of Best Practices as requested by the Task Force Sub-Committees. This in-depth research builds upon 2-3 months of preliminary research performed in the fall of 2017, presented to the Task Force in mid-January, and available on the Task Force website https://www.phlpreservation.org/. The National Trust undertook an additional 8-week research project to better understand and evaluate a refined list of Best Practices in four core areas – Survey, Outreach + Education, Incentives, and Regulation. Focused primarily, but not exclusively, on the Peer Cities identified earlier in the Task Force proceedings (Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Baltimore, Buffalo, and New Orleans), the National Trust’s Team conducted interviews with public agencies and local non-profits in each Peer City. Based on these interviews, extensive on-line research, and targeted outreach to preservation, public policy, and development professionals, as well as feedback from the Task Force subcommittees on initial drafts, the National Trust prepared the attached summaries of selected Best Practices. Included is an analysis identifying and articulating the benefits, challenges, applicability, funding, staffing requirements, and regulatory framework required for each of these Best Practices to succeed. Based on two rounds and nearly five months of intensive research by a team of eight multi-disciplinary professionals, the National Trust found that there is no “silver bullet” for historic preservation. -

PLAY Market Analysis A. The Industry Baltimore’s cultural, entertainment, and natural amenities are enjoyed by the residents in the Baltimore region as well as national and international tourists. In 2004, 11.79 million visitors from outside the Baltimore region explored the many attractions our City has to offer. In addition, 3.97 million visitors liv- ing in the Baltimore region, but outside Baltimore City, visited Baltimore. Of course, the 650,000 Baltimore City residents also enjoyed Baltimore’s numer- ous cultural, entertainment, and natural resource amenities. These amenities provide activities for all segments of the population, from youth and families to the elderly. The following discussion focuses on the market for Baltimore’s cultural, entertainment, and natural amenities, with emphasis on our customer base, market size, and trends. Heritage and Cultural Resources Baltimore’s heritage and cultural tourism industry provides place-based, unique experiential products that range from large, world-renowned attractions and events to small, locally celebrated attractions and events. The heritage and cultural tourism industry provides products within three broad areas: visual arts, including art museums, galleries, schools, studios, architecture and archi- tecture-related events; performing arts, including theater, art cinema, dance, and music; and historical and cultural resources, including history museums, literary events, bus and walking tours, and historic districts.1 These resources provide life-enriching experiences that are attracting a larger number of visitors who are generally over the age of 40. Heritage and Cultural tourism is expanding its products, especially in the African American niche market. In addition, visitation to historic and culturally rich neighborhoods is increasing. -

Tremont Plaza Hotel Baltimore, MD November 17 – 20, 2011 baltimore 2011 Fourteenth National Conference on Planning History Preliminary Program Society for American City and Regional Planning History November 17-20, 2011 Baltimore, Maryland On behalf of the SACRPH Program Committee, our Local Arrangements Committee, and all those who have worked hard to get us ready for the biennial conference, we welcome you to Baltimore for the 14th National Conference on Planning History. This year marks the 25th anniversary of SACRPH’s founding, and we are delighted to see that the organization continues to grow and diversify. The 2009 conference boasted a record number of sessions—54 of them—but 2011 brought in unprecedented numbers of proposals, yielding a program that has now expanded to 74 paper sessions. For the first time, we have extended the regular portion of the program into Sunday. The conference has grown larger, but this is not because the Program Committee reduced standards. All paper and panel proposals were read and rated by at least 3 different members of the Committee, and we accepted only those with high rankings. Fortunately, paper quality seems to be keeping pace with the growth of the organization. Although have added many more sessions, we have not shortened them or crowded in more presenters. Instead, we have kept to SACRPH’s traditional emphasis on permitting time for discussion, by endeavoring to give 3-paper sessions 105 minutes, and 4-paper sessions a full two hours. -

Stosur Mayor Director STAFF REPORT August 9, 2017 REQUEST: Five & Dime (Westside) Local Historic District Designation: Hearing Two RECOMMENDATION: Approval APPLICANT: Baltimore Development Corporation STAFF: Stacy Montgomery SUMMARY: Determination that the proposed designation of Five & Dime (Westside) as a local historic district meets the requirements of Baltimore City Historic Preservation Rules and Regulations’ Designation of Districts and Landmarks. The designation includes a full and proper study with findings of fact that the proposed district and its boundaries comply with requirements of Local Government Certification under the National Historic Preservation Act, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Identification and Registration, and CHAP’s own criteria for designation. HISTORIC DISTRICT NAME: Five & Dime (Westside) SUMMARY DESCRIPTION Situated within the historic retail core of Baltimore City and on a street grid that largely remains from the original settlement of the area, the proposed Five & Dime historic district demonstrates distinctive characteristics of 19th and early 20th century commercial architecture in a variety of styles. Five & Dime comprises about 5 city blocks northwest of the Inner Harbor and immediately adjacent to (west of) the Central Business District. Howard Street continues to serve this area as the primary thoroughfare for public transit, as the light rail tracks replaced the historic streetcar route. The district is comprised of a wide variety of commercial structures dating primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries. A number of the buildings have been modified over time to connect or modernize smaller buildings. Much of this work occurred during the period of significance and resulted from the change in the nature of retail design.
