Manga and Libraries in Japan by Yasuyo INOUYE (Dokkyo University) Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Manga publishing in Japan 3. Dispute over Manga 4. Manga at libraries 5. Manga at school libraries 6. Conclusion 1. Introduction There has been a long history of Manga (Comics, or graphic novels) publishing in Japan since the late 19th century. Some scholars have pointed out that ‘Chouju Giga’ drawn by Toba-Sojo around 11 century is one of the oldest comic illustrations. Now, people outside of Japan, especially the younger generation are fascinated by translated Japanese Manga and several related things. This article reports about the Manga publishing situation, historical disputes over Manga, and how Manga has been treated at libraries in Japan. 2. Manga publishing in Japan The expression Manga comes from Hokusai- manga. Hokusai KATSUSHIKA (1760-1849) drew humorous and critical cartoons, and moved on later to stories based on 4-frame-cartoons - these were called Manga. They are different to bande dessinée. Manga which have been translated into English are mainly long story Manga, so in US they are -pg. 1- known as Manga ‘graphic novels’, but Manga includes not only fiction but also nonfiction like history, biographies and other reference materials. 4-frame-cartoons developed into Kamishibai which is a series of story cartoons on more than ten pieces of cardboard. Later those stories started to be printed in newspapers and magazines for children and young people. Japanese Manga is still printed in magazines today, and also published in book format. Each magazine has a target readership, such as boys, girls, young men, young women, adults, and others.

  • Parody and Play in Est Em's Centaur Manga
A Centaur in Salaryman’s Clothing: Parody and Play in est em’s Centaur Manga ANNE LEE The University of Queensland ABSTRACT Japanese manga artist est em (esu to emu) is notable for blurring genre boundaries and subverting established conventions in various publications since her debut in 2006. Two of her works, Hatarake, kentaurosu! (‘Work, Centaur!’) and equus, focus exclusively on male centaurs in homosocial settings. Classifi ed as shōjo (girls’) manga and BL (‘boys’ love’) manga respectively, these two works allow female readers to enjoy the pleasures of homoerotic subtexts and intertextual parody. Th is paper examines how conventions of sexuality and gender, particularly hegemonic masculinity and heterosexuality, are constructed/deconstructed in est em’s centaur manga using the framework of intertextuality, with particular emphasis on parody, pleasure and play. By placing centaurs in realistic, everyday settings, these works present a critique of Japan’s contemporary salaryman culture, while also highlighting issues of alienation and otherness that both female readers and gay men face in their daily lives. • Preliminary Research on the Creation Process of Japanese Manga
Preliminary research on the creation process of Japanese manga Author(s) Keiko Kawamata Occupation : Associate Professor Affiliation : Kyoto Sangyo University Biography of the author(s) Keiko Kawamata is Associate Professor of marketing, Faculty of Business Administration, Kyoto Sangyo University. Kamigamo-motoyama, Kita-ku, Kyoto, 603-8555, Japan, e-mail: [email protected]. Abstract (150words) Japanese manga (comics) have been popular as the original source of motion pictures and anime (Japanese animation) because of their reputation of possessing strong story creation. The purpose of this article is to explore the creation system of Japanese manga with an emphasis on the dyadic relationship between mangaka and editors in ideation and the subsequent manga development process with employing the geneplore model of creative cognition. Although this paper is preliminary in nature, it is suggested that the creation necessitates trust in the dyadic relationship, which, in turn, facilitates the cycle of the geneplore process. Keywords (5 words) product development, content, Japanese manga, comics, geneplore model Introduction According to the Dejitaru Kontentsu Hakusho (2008; Digital Content White Paper), the market size of the Japanese content industry in 2007 was estimated to be 13.8 trillion yen (141 billion U.S. dollars (USD)/110 billion Euros (EUR)1. (Figure 1) Further, in terms of size, it was deemed to be second only to the U.S. industry. In fact, over the past few years, the Japanese content industry has been attracting considerable attention as the next leading industry. 1 Foreign exchange rates used in this article are USD/JPY = 98 and EUR/JPY = 126.
