How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home?
“Day of Atonement” In Hebrew. Healthy adults are commanded to refrain from eating and drinking from sunset to sunset to remind us of the frailty of the human body and our own mortality, and to encourage complete focus on the holiday. It is customary to wear white on the holiday and some choose to wear sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes out of deference to the ancient practice of avoiding leather shoes, which were a symbol of luxury. How Do We Celebrate Yom Kippur at Home? Before sundown, families and friends gather together and eat the last meal before the start of Yom Kip- pur and the period of fasting. It is only after the last bite is eaten, and the holiday candles are lit, that Yom Kippur and the fast officially begin. If you choose to fast, it is important to remember that children under the age of 13 are not required to fast nor are adults whose health precludes them from fasting. Yom Kippur is a somber Jewish holiday of reflection and contemplation. We think of those who came before us and those who have influenced our lives and we take the time to remember family and/or friends who have died. You can light a special Yahrzeit candle (available in Judaica shops and online), if you choose. Just like on Shabbat, two candles can be lit at the evening meal. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your com- mandments and commands us to light the [Sabbath and] holiday lights. -

The Internet provides Jews who do not fit within their brick and mortar communities an outlet that gives them voice, power, and sometimes anonymity. They use these websites to balance their Jewish identities and other personal identities that may or may not fit within their local Jewish community. This research was conducted through analyzing a broad range of websites. The first chapter, the introduction, describes the Jewish American population as a whole as well as the history of the Internet. The second chapter, entitled “The Black Hats of the Internet,” discusses how the Orthodox community has used the Internet to create a modern approach to outreach. It focuses in particular on the extensive web materials created by Chabad and Aish Hatorah, which offer surprisingly modern twists on traditional texts. The third chapter is about Jewish online dating. It uses JDate and other secular websites to analyze how Jewish singles are using the Internet. This chapter also suggests that the use of the Internet may have an impact on reducing interfaith marriage. The fourth chapter examines marginalized communities, focusing on the following: Jewrotica; the Jewish LGBT community including those who are “OLGBT” (Orthodox LGBT); Punk Jews; and feminist Jews. -

1 Jewish wigs and Islamic sportswear: Negotiating regulations of religion and fashion Emma Tarlo Goldsmiths, University of London Abstract This article explores the dynamics of freedom and conformity in religious dress prescriptions and fashion, arguing that although fashion is popularly perceived as liberating and religion as constraining when it comes to dress, in reality both demand conformity to normative expectations while allowing some freedom of interpretation. The article goes on to trace the emergence of new forms of fashionable religious dress such as the human-hair wigs worn by some orthodox Jewish women and the new forms of Islamic sportswear adopted by some Muslim women. It shows how these fashions have emerged through the efforts of religiously observant women to subscribe simultaneously to the expectations of fashion and religious prescription, which are seen to operate in a relationship of creative friction. In doing so, they invent new ways of dressing that push the boundaries of religious and fashion norms even as they seek to conform to them. It proposes that although religious regulations relating to dress play an obvious role in limiting sartorial possibilities, they also provide a stimulus for creative responses that result in stylistic innovation. Viewed in this light, new forms of fashionable religious dress should be seen not so much as attempts to dilute or circumvent religious prescriptions and regulations, but rather as aspiring to obey the rules of fashion and the rules of religion simultaneously. -

Often the only readily available books or web sites present an Orthodox viewpoint. This Guide is meant to provide an introduction to selected practical halachic topics from the viewpoint of Conservative Judaism. In addition, it gives some instruction on how to conduct various home rituals, and gives basic guidance for some major life events and other situations when a Rabbi may not be immediately available. Halacha is a guide to living a religious, ethical and moral life of the type expected and required of a Jew. 3 “He Has Tzitzis Hanging Out of His Ponytail” Orthodox Cultural Practices and How BTs Adapt Them Erev Shabbos (Sabbath Eve) One late Friday afternoon, I arrived at the Greenbaums’ home on Parker Street, near the middle of a block that had become very familiar to me. During my fieldwork, I spent several Shabboses and holidays with various families on this block, where twenty-five of the twenty- eight families are Orthodox Jews. Since traditionally observant Jews do not drive on Shabbos, they either live within walking distance of a synagogue or regularly spend Shabbos with people who do. This block was about a fifteen-minute walk from Shomrei Emunah, the largest shul in Milldale. Wearing a long skirt, long sleeves, high collar, and hat, I opened my bag and took out my thank-you gift, a bottle of kosher wine. Mrs. Greenbaum showed me to the basement, where I would be sleeping, and suggested that I dim the lights so that the room would be illuminated enough for walking around but still dark enough for me to sleep. The laws of Shabbos do not per- mit turning lights on or off. The six Greenbaum daughters who were still living at home— ranging in age from five to twenty—showered and dressed for Shab- bos, and Mrs. Greenbaum and I lit the candles. Mrs. Greenbaum changed into her tailored skirt suit and replaced her cloth head covering with a medium- length sheitel. We then took out some folding chairs and sat on the front lawn to wait for Rabbi Greenbaum to return from shul.
