Lds Church Leadership Handbook Lds church leadership handbook Continue The new guide for leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (first announced in January) is now available in English online and in the Gospel Library app. Nine of the 38 chapters were completely rewritten and one section of the other chapter was updated. See a summary of the changes below. Also see a list of frequently asked questions. This book, titled General Guide: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, replaces both Handbook 1 (for stake and bishops presidents) and Handbook 2 (for all other leaders). The new book (only digital, with a few exceptions for some areas) is available to all and will be regularly updated to give it the necessary flexibility to help thousands of leaders around the world adapt the church's various programs, policies, and procedures to their circumstances with loving, pastoral care. Downloadable video sound bites for journalists In the version released today, almost 80% of the content was translated from the old directories and reordered in the new organizational structure. Why were only nine chapters rewritten? With changes in several important chapters completed in 2019 (see, for example, here and here), Church leaders have decided to accelerate the production of new consolidated leadership instead of updating old resources. Our original plan was to completely rewrite the manual and then translate that. This gave us a delivery date, probably 2022, said Elder Anthony D. Perkins, executive director of the Church Correlation Department, which oversees the leadership. But as the first chapters came out, the First Presidency and the Twelve believed that updates were important enough to release them as soon as possible. See the First Presidency's letter on the new leadership. The Church of Jesus Christ believes in the continuing revelation of the prophets and apostles. And that means, in a word, that the Church is true and alive. It can change, Elder Perkins said. Having a guide that is largely digitally delivered allows us to update it as a new revelation is received as the Church goes in new directions as part of its worldwide growth. © 2020 Intellectual Reserve, Inc. All rights are reserved. Many women and men of Latter-day Saints were not familiar with previous Church guidelines, especially Handbook 1. Each of the updated chapters available today is based on principles and has broad application to all members of the Church. It is so important for members to understand, both men and women, that God gives us His strength so that we can go and do what He asked us to do, said Sister Reina I. Aburto of the Relief Society General Presidency, who was closely involved in the creation of the new And He also delegated power to us so that we could receive revelation and have his help and his guidance every step of the way. The nine updated chapters (all 38 will be reworked by 2021) reflect a new tone and approach that has been under consideration for several years. If you look at the evolution of leadership over the last hundred years, it's going from administrative procedures to a more ministerial voice, Elder Perkins said. What we mean is that previous reference books were kind of designed for larger units - say, Alpine, Utah - and we need a guide that can be applied even in the smallest units. Sister Aburto, a Nicaraguan-born member who is part of a committee that meets regularly to review every word of the leadership, said the text's ministerial tone would help leaders from different walks of life better understand and apply its principles. She said that her experience as a professional interpreter was particularly useful in the review process. I was trying to find places where translating from English to Spanish can be difficult and difficult, she says. I tried to make sure that the language is clear, so when it is translated, the real meaning is put in translation. The book is translated into 51 languages as soon as possible. Church leaders in non-English speaking wards must use the old manual until a new version is available in their language. Another advantage of the digital guide is that it accommodates different learning styles. Some people learn by reading, others watch, Elder Perkins said. And so the guide will have a built-in video showing how to do something. The following is a summary of the new contents of the handbook. Also see this list of frequently asked questions. Summary of nine rewritten chapters 1: God's plan and your role in the work of salvation and exaltation This chapter is new and helps Latter-day Saints understand God's plan of happiness, the work of salvation and exaltation (the organizing basis for the General Guide) and the purpose of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 2: Supporting individuals and families in the work of the salvation and exaltation of the Saints teaches the role of the family in God's plan, the central role of the home in the work of salvation and exaltation, and the relationship between home and the Church. 3: Leaders and members of the Priesthood Church learn about what the priesthood is, where it comes from, and how it works and blesses life. This includes the truth that all Latter-day Saints, regardless of their gender or Church assignment, exercise delegated priesthood powers when they are given formal opportunities to serve in their wards. All members who will keep their covenants - women, men, and children - are blessed with God's priesthood in their homes to strengthen themselves and their families, the chapter concludes. 4: Leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ members teach the principles of Christ's leadership, including how to prepare spiritually, counsel together and build unity with others in their congregation and the importance of delegation. 15: Seminary and Institutes of Religion This chapter sets out a church seminary program (religious education for adolescents) and an Institute program (religious teaching of latter-day saints between the ages of 18 and 30). The text also points readers to CES. ChurchofJesusChrist.org for more information on Church Elementary and Secondary Schools, BYU-Pathway Worldwide and Higher Education. 18: Priesthood Sacraments and Blessings This chapter includes references to resources and instructional videos that show how to conduct many of the various rites of the Church. More videos will be added over time. 32: The Councils of Repentance and Membership in the Church This chapter (formerly known as Church discipline) has made a significant difference. It guides leaders in a more consistent way through the key decisions and actions needed to help people repent of serious sin. This chapter also focuses on how to help protect others from those who pose a physical or spiritual threat. Some key terms have changed. Disciplinary councils are now called church councils. As before, these counsels are an expression of love, hope, and care to help Latter-day Saints in repentance. In addition, instead of being disfellowshipped, members receive formal membership restrictions. And excommunication is now called rejection of membership. The idea behind these terminology changes is for us to understand that when we make a mistake in our lives, the Lord will always hold his hands of mercy, Sister Aburto said. 36: Creating, modifying and naming new units This chapter provides guidelines for the creation and adjustment of stakes, wards, and wards. 37: Specialized stakes, wards, and wards here, church leaders, and members explore the parameters for creating stakes, wards, and wards served by specific groups. These include those who speak a particular language, are students, are single, live in a care facility or are in some other unique circumstances. Updated Section 38.6: Here are Church policies and guidelines for church policies and procedures on a range of moral issues. Some policies are new, some have been updated and some may be updated in the future. These moral policies include abortion, abuse, in vitro fertilization, birth control, child pornography, incest, in vitro fertilization, same-sex marriage, upbringing, sexual abuse, single parents, sperm donation, suicide, surgical sterilization, surrogacy and a new record of Persons. Due to this, content from the Mormon and Gay website has moved to a new part of the ChurchofJesusChrist.org, with a new URL. There is also a new ChurchofJesusChrist.org for transgender people. One of the new moral strategies concerns individuals who identify as transgender. The reason the policy was added is that we have more questions coming from bishops and stake presidents saying, What can a transgender person do? What are the guidelines? Transgender policy states that everyone can attend our meetings and that we must create a warm, welcoming environment for everyone, including those who identify as transgender. At the same time, politics makes it clear that some things in the Church are gender-specific. Church leaders will continue to review and update leadership policies and guidelines as needed. RICKS* This paper's discussion dispenses with the traditional academic refusal to commit in matters of faith. In fact, my religious faith, explained here by reference to scripture' and spiritual experience, to a large degree produces the political commitment I feel with respect to abortion. To write from reason alone and hide my faith would be disingenuous. Moreover, as should be plain to anyone familiar with 2 the legal disputes over abortion, reason alone persuades neither side. Nor has it persuaded me. So, though others have reasoned to conclusions similar to mine, my ultimate understanding does not rest solely on such reasoning. A caveat is in order. I do not speak for the church of which I am a member, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"The" Mormon point of view, at this moment, does not exist on the subjects under discussion. Certainly many Mormons hold strong views on these subjects, and some argue their views reflect those of the Church.1 Rather, I mean that if one were to write, as I did, and ask the First Presidency —• which is solely entrusted with the authority to establish official Mormon Church policy — if it has "a position, or a doctrine . relating to the subject" of any of the four medical processes this symposium addresses, one would receive an answer stating that the Church has not "taken an official position with respect to the issues raised by the scenarios." If, mildly surprised that this should be so despite the explicit or implicit overtones of abortion in two of the four scenarios, one writes again, highlighting this problem, he or she will be referred without elaboration to the "current official policy of the Church with respect to [abortion]" and advised that "the scenarios . should be viewed in light of this policy" (Gibbons 1982, 1983). Cosponsored by the Relief Society Gather All Safely In Christ April 30–May 1, 2020 Welcome to BYU Women’s Conference Dear Sisters, Welcome to the 2020 Brigham Young University Women’s Conference. We are delighted to have you here, and we thank you for bringing that special “Women’s Conference” spirit of charity and commitment with you. We are very grateful for the co-sponsorship of this conference by the Relief Society. Their guidance and influence in all of our preparations are unparalleled. Together we hope that you will feel answers to your concerns, comfort for your struggles, and encouragement in your efforts. This year’s theme, Gather All Safely In Christ, comes from President Russell M. Nelson’s emphasis on the gathering of scattered Israel in preparation for the Savior’s Second Coming. He has reached out to all of us, daughters of Heavenly Parents, and asked that we do all in our power to assist in bringing our brothers and sisters to Jesus Christ and the blessings of the plan of salvation. In this conference we will explore the many ways we can facilitate this great gathering. We also invite you to respond to our invitation, described on the Women’s Conference website and social media pages, to help illustrate the many ways sisters are contributing to the gathering of Israel. Please share your examples and experiences with us, and we will share them with attendees at Women’s Conference this year. We especially note the second Sister-to-Sister Event on Friday morning as our sister leaders answer questions and concerns from around the world and here at home.

Chapter 13 Correlation: The Turning Point (1960s) Michael A. Goodman orrelation has a long history of starts and stops, successes and Csetbacks. Often misconstrued as solely related to curricular issues, correlation has had a much broader focus from the beginning. President Harold B. Lee stated that one of the primary purposes of correlation was to place “the Priesthood as the Lord intended, as the center core of the Kingdom of God, and the auxiliaries as related thereto; including a greater emphasis on the Fathers in the home as Priesthood bearers in strengthening the family unit.”1 Though the vision has been large as eternity, the work of the kingdom for the first century was largely local in focus and readily directed by the presiding brethren at Church headquarters. Though missionaries were sent throughout the world starting as early as 1830, most con- verts were encouraged to emigrate soon after their conversion. Though some converts stayed in their native lands, the Church’s international Michael A. This book is available directly from the publisher at the following link: http://www.peterlang.com/Index.cfm?vID=36223&vLang=E . TOWARDS AN LDS UNDERSTANDING OF CHURCH AUTONOMY FREDERICK MARK GEDICKS 1 Summary THE LDS CHURCH 'S CONSERVATIVE THEOLOGY AND ITS HISTORY OF PERSECUTION IN THE UNITED STATES HAVE LED IT TO PURSUE THE BIBLICAL COMMAND TO “PREACH THE GOSPEL TO ALL THE WORLD ” BY SUBORDINATING CHURCH AUTONOMY CONCERNS TO POLICIES OF POLITICAL NEUTRALITY AND OBEDIENCE TO LAW BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES. As befits a religion that values both practical wisdom and modern-day revelation, many policies and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – more commonly known as the “Latter-day Saint”, “LDS”, or “Mormon” church – have originated as responses to specific problems faced by the church during its history. The development of Latter- day Saint thought on church autonomy issues follows this pattern. LDS ideas about how and to what extent decisions about the governance of the church should be free from government control or influence developed in response to a relatively recent event – the determination of LDS church leaders in the 1970s to attempt to establish an LDS presence in countries with a perceived hostility to the church and its proselyting activities. I will begin with an historical overview of the LDS church's missionary program, and a discussion of how the church's decision to seek a genuinely 1 Professor of Law, Brigham Young University Law School, Provo, Utah; gedicksf@ lawgate.byu.edu.

chapter 8 Faith in Every Footstep: Local Leadership and Fortieth Anniversary (1990–99) he Church continued to grow and mature throughout its first forty years among the Chinese people in Taiwan. In the T1990s, the number of stakes in Taiwan doubled from three to six. There was one stake organized in the 1970s, two in the 1980s, and three in the 1990s, all staffed by local members. Additional leadership roles were given to local Chinese members during this decade, as they exercised “Faith in Every Footstep,” the theme for the Church’s pioneer sesquicentennial in 1997. In 1996, forty years after the first missionaries arrived in Taiwan, the Church News reported there were two missions with more than 300 missionaries, four mission districts, and four stakes with about 22,000 members in twenty-two wards and thirty-one branches in Taiwan.1 Church membership grew from 17,239 to 26,805 between 1989 and 1999. The Church in Taiwan was abreast to the one in the United States, with its full range of pro- grams, training, materials, and resources during this period. Key events in the 1990s included the organization of additional stakes, the leadership training by visiting authorities and the new Asia Area Presidency, and the Church’s continuous focus on the VOICE OF THE SAINTS family. The 1990s also included the call of the first Chinese temple presidents, Area Seventy, and General Authority, as well as Taiwan’s celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the Church on the island in 1996 and the reopening of the Kaohsiung Taiwan Mission.
