Decorative lights at a supermarket in Doha are reflected in rainwater last evening. SALIM MATRAMKOT Scattered rains in Doha; more showers forecast DOHA: A trough (low pressure) in the region caused unstable weather, with Qatar receiving scattered showers until late yesterday. The northern and western areas of the country witnessed more rains. People can expect similar weather tomor- row and the day after, weather forecasters told this newspaper. “We expect rains on Sunday and Monday,” a forecaster said, adding that northwesterly winds blowing from colder regions could lower temperatures until Monday. Day temperatures might drop to between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius, while at some places the mercury could dip to as low as 13 degrees in the night. The minimum tem- perature, however, is likely to average 16 and 17 degrees Celsius. “This weather con- dition is expected to last a few days,” said the forecaster. The sea is expected to be rough today KEEPING ORDER with the wind gathering speeds of up to 25 knots offshore. Inshore, the wind speed would be between five and 15 knots. The fore- caster said his bureau had already issued high and low tide timings for various places, including Doha, Umm Saeed, Al Wakra, Al Khor, Ruwais and Dukhan. “We have issued ON NATIONAL DAY warnings.” Visibility will not be affected much and has been forecast at between four and eight kilometres for today. DOHA: National Day hats, party wigs and masks are the new merchandise that has recently hit the market for youth gearing up for the celebration of the coun- try’s most important day on Tuesday. Wacky hats in a dozen varieties, such as top hats, jester hats, stovepipe hats and party hats in various designs, can be bought for between QR20 and QR30 in Souq Al Ali, where the long line of tailoring shops has been busy the past few weeks making National Day men’s thobes, girls’ dresses and flags of all sizes. The prices of the flags vary according to their size, from small flags costing QR5 and QR10 that are nor- mally used to deck up cars, to gigantic banners draped on buildings to show an establishment’s solidarity with National Day. The men’s thobes and girls’ dresses, which are usually made for school students for the National Day events in their schools, are priced between QR60 and QR100, while gowns are available in the QR150 to QR250 range. “The prices have increased by QR10 to QR20 because of the new designs,” said Abdulrahman, a shopkeeper at a shop selling ready-to-wear gowns specially created for the occasion. While there are some shops selling National Day nov- elty items and memorabilia, the tailoring shops also offer Customers buy wares in a shop at Souq Waqif. other items, making the Souq the place to go to for all National Day-related purchases. Aside from the National Day outfits, lots of accessories that can literally dress up a reveller from head to toe are available in the market. They include sunglasses, watches, temporary tattoos, jewellery, nail extensions, caps, scarves and wristbands. For those who want to make some noise on the day, there is a National Day horn costing QR20, and to add more colour to the celebrations there are party poppers and party sprays priced between QR10 and QR20. Other interesting products include mobile phone cases, umbrellas, bags, key holders, wallets, chokers, stickers, bracelets and buttons, some of which have blinking lights. Among the must-haves for the revellers are party wigs that come in three types, and face and eye masks, all of which bear the national flag’s colours. As of Thursday, however, sales of the different products were not encouraging for the shop owners unlike last year and in 2010, when the country won the right to host the football World Cup in 2022. “There are not many customers these days, but I expect there would be more buyers tomorrow, and a rush on the eve of the celebration, as is the case every year,” said Tanvir, a shopkeeper selling novelty items. The same bleak mood pervades Souq Waqif, which had very few customers at shops selling National Day mer- chandise, whose prices are a bit high compared to Souq Al Ali and Al Rawnaq, a famous store chain offering all sorts of National Day accessories. The National Day would not be as colourful without these memorabilia that serve as potent symbols that instantly remind both citizens and expatriates of the spirit of the national celebration at a personal level, fur- ther enriching the celebrations. For some motorists, however, the celebrations will not be as exciting as in the previous years as the Traffic Department has issued a notice prohibiting adorning of cars with body wrap stickers, posters and banners that make it difficult for the traffic police to identify a vehicle or its driver. The notice was issued to car accessory shops which in the previous years have seen brisk business installing stickers on cars for anything between QR150 and over QR500, depending on the design and size. With the increase in the variety of memorabilia avail- able in the market, Tuesday will certainly be a maroon- and-white day for all. We are going to have to The other side come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this Quote of (Connecticut school shooting) US two-faced toward Syria the day regardless of the politics. Barack Obama he United States recognised the Syrian Opposition Council, US President Syria’s newly formed main opposition group, as the sole T“legitimate representative” of the Syrian people on Tuesday. It is evident that the US-led Western countries are determined to push their own agenda on the Syria crisis. This will only further complicate the 21-month crisis in Syria, as it runs counter to the international consensus on solving the crisis through political resolutions and pushing for dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition forces. Nothing is clearer than the US-led Western countries are maneuvering for a regime change in Syria. In an interview with ABC News, US President Barack Obama did not hesitate to call the US recognition “a big step” in the so- called international efforts to unseat Syrian President Bashar Al Assad. The US decision will embolden Syria’s opposition forces to fight in an even fiercer way with the government forces, which will in turn bring more bloodshed and humanitarian disasters to the country. Yet, the recognition of the Syrian opposition group might be only one step in the US and its Western allies’ maneuvering for a regime change in Syria. Nato’s decision to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey last week was seen as a step toward making preparations for military inter- vention in Syria. \Western leaders’ stern warnings and criticism of Syria’s chem- ical weapons this month could also be perceived as consolidating “moral grounds” for that purpose. On the other hand, the US does not disavow its support to political resolutions to the Syrian crisis. On Sunday, Lakdhar Brahimi, the United Nations and Arab League joint envoy on Syria, said in a statement that in his meeting with senior US and Russian officials in Geneva they agreed “a political process to end the crisis in Syria was necessary and still possible”. The US should match words with deeds. It’s double-dealing in the Syria crisis is both immoral and irresponsible, and it offsets the international efforts that have been made so far to resolve the crisis through talks and negotiations.
