The study concluded that ELCIN is not actively involved in addressing human rights issues in the post- independent Namibia. The ELCIN should therefore revisit her position regarding national reconciliation and should address the social justice issues currently unfolding in Namibia. Reconciliation is a huge challenge for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia. This study is an overview of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia regarding her engagement in the reconciliation before and after Namibia’s independence, particularly, the period during 1970 – 2010. The study highlights on the one side the ministry of reconciliation and on the other side the role the ELCIN in corroboration with member churches of council of Churches in Namibia should play in order to address socio-justice issues in post-independent Namibia adequately. It is further argued in this study that the legacies of separation through the South African government in Namibia, tribal conflicts and church judicial regulations of Lutheran churches in Namibia contributed to the current challenges regarding reconciliation of the Lutheran churches in Namibia. The ELCIN are called to be ambassadors of the ministry of reconciliation namely: restorative justice, atonement and forgiveness, fellowship with God, peace and healing. God has entrusted this ministry of reconciliation to the church. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN), as the largest denomination in the country has important role to play in the church and society regarding the pursuing of both spiritual and national reconciliation. iv Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za The ELCIN jointly with other churches in Namibia should engage actively with all role-players regarding the conceptualization and implementation of a national policy of reconciliation in Namibia. Amongst others cognisance should be taken in the discourse about national reconciliation of the African understanding of reconciliation in Namibia. ELCIN with the other two Lutheran churches in Namibia, that is ELCRN and ELCIN/GELC, represent the majority of the Christian population in the country. A huge responsibility to embody reconciliation rests on the church in Namibia. ELCIN in corroboration with member churches of the Council of churches in Namibia should revisit their positions regarding the role of the church in the post independent Namibia. The study concludes with recommendations regarding reconciliation for further research. v Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Hierdie navorsing behels ʼn histories-teologiese ondersoek met betrekking tot versoening in die Evangeliese Lutherse Kerk in Namibië (ELKIN) en sluit onder meer in werk met betrekking tot die daarstelling van ʼn regverdige samelewing in beide die voor en na onafhanklike era van Namibië (1970-2010). Die studie konkludeer dat ELKIN onbetrokke is in die aanspreek van menseregte aangeleenthede in die post-onafhanklike Namibië. Die ELKIN behoort haar standpuntname met betrekking tot nasionale versoening in heroorweging te neem en behoort aandag te verleen aan die sake wat betrekking het op sosiale geregtigheid wat tans besig is om in Namibië te ontvou. Versoening is ʼn groot uitdaging vir die Evangeliese Lutherse Kerk in Namibië. Hierdie studie het betrekking op 'n oorsig van die Evangeliese Lutherse Kerk in Namibië met betrekking tot haar betrokkenheid in die versoening voor en na Namibië se onafhanklikheid, veral, die tydperk 1970 – 2010. Aan die een kant beklemtoon die studie die bediening van versoening en aan die anderkant die rol wat ELKIN in samewerking met die lidkerke van die Namibiese Raad van Kerke kan speel met betrekking tot die aanspreek van sosiale-geregtigheid sake in post-onafhanklikheid Namibië. Daar word verder in hierdie studie aangevoer dat die nalatenskap van aparte ontwikkeling deur die Suid-Afrikaanse regering in Namibië, stam konflikte en kerk-juridiese bepalinge van Lutherse kerke in Namibië bydra tot die uitdagings van die Lutherse kerke in Namibië met betrekking tot versoening. Die ELKIN word opgeroep om ambassadeurs vir die bediening van versoening te word naamlik: herstellende geregtigheid, versoening en vergifnis, gemeenskap met God, vrede en genesing. God het hierdie bediening van die versoening toevertrou aan die kerk. vi Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Die Evangeliese Lutherse Kerk in Namibië (ELKIN), as die grootste kerk in die land het ʼn belangrike te speel in kerk en samelewing met betrekking tot die najaag van geestelike versoening sowel as nasionale versoening. Die ELKIN in medewerking met ander Namibiese kerke behoort aktief betrokke te raak met alle rolspelers met betrekking tot die konseptualisering en implementering van die nasionale beleid van versoening in Namibië. Daar behoort onder andere kennis geneem te word in die diskoers met betrekking tot nasionale versoening van die Afrika verstaan van die begrip versoening in Namibië. ELKIN saam met die ander twee Lutherse kerke in Namibië; dit is ELKRN en ELKIN / DELK, verteenwoordig die meerderheid Christene in die land. ʼn Groot verantwoordelikheid om versoening te beliggaam berus op die kerk in Namibië. ELKIN in medewerking met die lidkerke van die Raad van Kerke in Namibië moet hul standpuntname met betrekking tot nasionale versoening en die rol van die kerk in post-onafhanklike Namibië in heroorweging te neem.     Itinerary for Namibia Study Tour, 2020 April15th, Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek, Namibia. Meet at Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel. Late afternoon group orientation, updates and dinner at Casa. April 16th, Day 2: Following a Casa breakfast we will listen to A “History of Namibia” lecture by Dr. Martha Akawa, University of Namibia (UNAM). After a short coffee/tea break, Ms. Louisa Mupetami, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Natural Resources, Parks and Regional Services. Following this we will head to the University of Namibia (UNAM) to have a lunch with PLU Alumni, Edwin Tjiramba, Director of Marketing and Communications and the PLU students who are studying at UNAM for the semester. After lunch, we will tour Heroes’ Acre war memorial. The rest of the afternoon is free time for resting or exploring downtown Windhoek. A group dinner will be at the Stellenbosch Bistro. April 17th, Day 3: Following Casa breakfast, we will tour the township called Katutura with city guide, Audwin “Scobie” de Wet. We also will visit Fidel Castro Luz Primary School in the informal settlement of Babylon. Lunch will be at Sicilia’s in downtown Windhoek. Scobie then will continue his city tour of the Independence Memorial Museum, Parliament building and other city sites. You will have an option of remaining in the city or returning to Casa. An evening gathering at NICE (National Institute of Culinary Education) restaurant with heavy appetizers will complete the day. You will meet with members of PLU’s “Namibian Nine” (Alumni of PLU), the UNAM Vice Chancellor Kenneth Matengu and, if available, the current US Ambassador to Namibia, Lisa Johnson.

Limited research has focussed on historical droughts during the pre-instrumental 16 weather-recording period in semi-arid to arid human-inhabited environments. Here we describe 17 the unique nature of droughts over semi-arid central Namibia (southern Africa) between 1850 18 and 1920. More particularly, our intention is to establish temporal shifts of influence and 19 impact that historical droughts had on society and the environment during this period. This is 20 achieved through scrutinizing documentary records sourced from a variety of archives and 21 libraries. The primary source of information comes from missionary diaries, letters and reports. 22 These missionaries were based at a variety of stations across the central Namibian region and 23 thus collectively provide insight to sub-regional (or site specific) differences in hydro- 24 meteorological conditions, and drought impacts and responses. Earliest instrumental rainfall 25 records (1891-1913) from several missionary stations or settlements are used to quantify hydro- 26 meteorological conditions and compare with documentary sources. The work demonstrates 27 strong-sub-regional contrasts in drought conditions during some given drought events and the 28 dire implications of failed rain seasons, the consequences of which lasted many months to 29 several years.

This report provides an overview of the findings and recommendations of a Namibian team that visited Finland from 6th-16th June, 2015. The team consisted of Dr Jeremy Silvester (Project Development Manager) and Ms Charmaine Tjizezenga (Project Officer: Exhibition Development) from the Museums Association of Namibia and Mrs Magdalena Kaanante (Curator: Nakambale Museum). The trip was one of the activities funded by the Embassy of Finland in Namibia to support `Exhibition Development in Namibian Museums’. As a result of this historical presence, it was expected that the church would take a proactive role in the reconciliation of the Namibian people in the new independent country.     Statement from the Synod of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa 'God has given us the ministry of reconciliation’ 2 Cor 5:18 We, the Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, meeting at the Gonubie Hotel near East London in the Diocese of Grahamstown between 13 and 18 February 2016, wish to share our experience and reflections with the people of the Church. Archbishop Thabo Makgoba asked the Bishops on this occasion to arrive early for their synod in order to express their pastoral presence in the Diocese of Grahamstown and the dioceses of the Eastern Cape more widely. On Sunday 14 February the bishops were invited for refreshments at the guest house of the Premier of the Province of the Eastern Cape, Mr Phumulo Masualle, in King William's Town before embarking on a moving peace walk from the Good News Centre up the hill on the route taken by the marchers to Bisho stadium in 1992, when they were met by the then security forces and 28 were killed. Premier Masualle who was on the march of 1992 and came close to being killed, joined the bishops in the march, together with the mayor and other dignitaries and many Anglican Church groups in uniform. The Archbishop spoke briefly, apologising where the Anglican Church may have failed to act adequately in the past, and he and the Premier laid a wreath at the memorial. The bishops then proceeded into the stadium for a moral regeneration rally led by the MEC for Art, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Ms Penny Majodina, who is also a Methodist lay preacher (and it showed); here the Premier spoke powerfully about the need for moral renewal in the leadership of the nation.

Christo Botha* Abstract The role of churches in Namibia had investigated by researchers who aimed to docu- ment the history of various churches, as well as those who highlighted the role of black churches in particular, as mouthpieces for the disenfranchised majority in the struggle against apartheid. This article aims to shed light on a matter that had received relatively little attention, namely the church as an instrument of social justice and peace. An assessment of the role of various churches reveal to what extent these institutions were handicapped by ethnocentric concerns, which militated against the promotion of ecumenical cooperation. Except for a brief period in the 1970s and 1980s when the Council of Churches in Namibia served as an instrument for inter- church cooperation and promotion of social justice projects, little had arguably been achieved in establishing workable, enduring ecumenical ties. An attempt will be made to account for this state of affairs. Introduction Much is often made of the fact that Namibia is a largely Christian country, with about 90% of the population belonging to various Christian denominations. However, what strikes one when looking at the history of Christianity in the country and the role of the church, is the absence of evidence to support any claims that religion was a potent force for promoting the cause of human rights and mutual understanding and for eliminating ethnic divisions. In assessing the role of religion and the church in Namibian society, this article is concerned with three issues.
