SIR COLIN CAMPBELL, second son of Duncan, first Lord Campbell,(No. 7), died I47S· The lands of Glenurchy were conferred on him by his father, 20th October 1432, and the king granted him the Barony of , 17th December 1473. He is said to have built at Loch Awe, and as tutor to his nephew, the of Argyll, he built the Castle of in the middle of the fifteenth century. (MacGibbon and Ross's Castellated Arckitecture of .) His wife is said to have been Mary Stewart, daughter of Duncan, Earl of Lennox, or of Walter Stewart of Albany, but this is doubtful. He married first c. 1448, Janet Stewart, eldest of the three daughters and co-heiresses of John, Lord Lorn, and on account of this marriage the Glenurchy Campbells quartered the arms of Lorn and Stewart with the gyrons of Campbell. By this lady he had:- (a) Sir Duncan (No. IS2). (b) Patrick Campbell, died s.p. He married second, Margaret, daughter of Robert Robertson of Strowan, and had:- (c) John Campbell, Bishop of the Isles, died ISth July ISIO. He married third, before 27th October 1467, Margaret, daughter of Luke Stirling of Keir, and had:- (d) John Campbell of Lawers (No. 232). (e) George Campbell, died young. (1S2) SIR DUNCAN CAMPBELL, SECOND OF GLENURCHY, was killed at Flodden, 9th September ISI3. He married first, c. 14th October 1479, Margaret Douglas, daughter of George, fourth Earl of Angus, and had :- (a) Sir Colin (No. IS3)· (b) Archibald ofGlenlyon (No. 213). (c) Patrick Campbell, died young, 14th January IS07. He married second, Margaret, daughter of Sir John Moncrieff of that Ilk, who died November ISS4. and had:- (d) John Campbell of Crannich, Bishop of the Isles. (IS3) SIR COLIN CAMPBELL, TIIIRD OF GLENURCHY, died 12th August IS23. He is said to have built the Chapel of Finlarig, the burial place of the family, He married Marjory Stewart, daughter of John, Earl of Atholl, and had three sons, who all succeeded to Glenurchy :- (a) Sir Duncan (No. IS4). (b) Sir John (No. ISS). (c) Colin (No. IS6). (IS4) SIR DUNCAN CAMPBELL, FOURTH OF GLENURCHY, died 5th September IS36. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Colquhoun of that Ilk, and had:­ (a) A son who died young. (ISS) SIR JOHN CAMPBELL, FIFTH OF GLENURCHY, succeeded his brother, and died Sth July ISSO. ( 156) COLIN CAMPBELL, SIXTH OF GLENURCHY, died IIth April 1583, succeeded his brother. WiJI recorded 3rd April 1584, Edinburgh. He is said to have built . He married first, before 16th April 1548, Margaret, daughter of Alexander Stewart, Bishop of Moray. He married second, 28th January 1550-51, Katherine, daughter of William, Lord Ruthven, and had:- (a) Sir Duncan (No. 157). (b) Colin Campbell, married Margaret, daughter of Robert Monro of Foulis, c. 1584, and had:- (I) Colin, married Jean Chisholm. (c) Patrick Campbell of Auchinryre died before 20th August 1622. (d) Archibald Campbell, died s.p. Married Margaret, daughter of Andrew Toshock of Monzie. Brms on Seal 1556.-1 and 4· Gyronny of eight. 2. A galley. 3· A fess chequy. (1 57) SIR DUNCAN CAMPBELL, SEVENTH OF GLENURCHY ("BLACK DUNCAN"), died 23rd June 1631, aged eighty-one. In 16II he and several of his sons burnt the Castle of Glenstrae and town of Dewletter, for which they were granted Letters of Remission in 1627. On 29th May 1625 he was created a OF NOVA SCOTIA, with remainder to his -heirs male whatsoever. He was M.P. for Argyllspire 1593 and 1599, and he built the Castle of Finlarig and several other residences. He married first, Contract 18th November 1573, Jean Stewart, daughter of John, fourth Earl of Athol!. She died September 1593, and had:- (a) Sir Colin (No. I 58). (b) Sir Robert (No, 159). (c) Duncan Campbell, died young. (d) John Campbell of Auchinryre, died 1618. He married, Contract 29th August 1614, Florentine, daughter of Duncan MacDougall of Dunolly, and had:- ( x) Alexander, died before 4th February 1643. (2) Duncan. (3) Archibald. (e) Archibald Campbell of Lagvinschock and Monzie (No. 175). (/) Alexander Campbell, died young. (g) Duncan Campbell, died young. He married second, between 7th October and 7th November 1597, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry, . She died October 1654, having had :- (h) Patrick Campbell of Edinample. He was a Covenanter and was killed, probably at Kilsyth 1645. He married, Contract 19th November 1625, Margaret, daughter of Colin Campbell of Aberuchill, and had :- (1) John. (2) Colin of Glentarken. (3) Patrick. (4) James. He had also two natural sons :- (t) Patrick, ancestor of Campbell of Barcaldine (No. 189). (j) James Campbell. (158) SIR COLIN CAMPBELL, SECOND BARONET OF GLENURCHY, died s,P. 6th September 1640, aged sixty-three. He married, Contract 1594, daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudoun. He was succeeded by his brother :- (159) SIR ROBERT CAMPBELL, THIRD BARONET OF GLENURCHY, died 17th November 1657, aged eighty-two. Will recorded at Dunblane 19th May 1659. He was M.P. for Argyllshire 1639-41 , 1643, 1644-47. He married, Contract 16th December 1005, Isabel, daughter of Lachlan Mackintosh of Dunnackton, and had by her, who died 24th December 1667, aged eighty-four:- (a) Sir John (No. 16o). (b) Duncan Campbell, died 16th August 1630, aged twenty-two. (c) Colin of Mocbaster (No. 164). (d) Robert Campbell, died young. (e) William (No. 167). (/) James Campbell, died young: (g) Alexander Campbell of Lochdocbart, married first, 29th January 1656, Julian, daughter of Alexander Robertson of Strowan, and second, on 19th September 1671, Magdalene, daughter of William Menzies of Carse. He had a son :- (t) John of Lochdochart, who had a son:- (a) William of Lochdochart, who married and had a son:- ( 1) Allan of Lochdochart. Brms recorded 1748-54--1, 2, and 3, as Earl of Breadalbane. 4- Gold, a red lion rampat~t for Macintosh. CREST: A boaYs /zead erased proper. MOTTO: "Recta sequor." [Plate I II., fig. 3.] (h) Duncan Campbell of Auchlyne, born 1631; died 1703. He married Christian, daughter of Walter Dalgleish. She died 1698 leaving issue. His great grandson was James Goodlatt Campbell of Auchlyne. Brms recorded 1748-54·-1 and 4- Gyronny o.f eight, gold and black. 2. Gold, a foss clzequy blue and silver. 3· Parted per foss silver and green, two unicorns' heads couped black; one silver goutty red, all armed gold. [Plate I I 1., fig. 4.] ( 16o) SIR JOHN CAMPBELL, FOURTH BARONET OF GLENURCHY, died June 1686. Will recorded 3rd August 1686 in Argyll. He married first, Mary Graham, daughter of William, Earl of Airth and Menteith, and she died 28th January 1653, having had:- (a) John (No. 161 ). (b) Robert Campbell of Barcaldine, died s,p. 1670. He married , Anna Campbell, natural daughter of the Earl of Argyll. (c) Alexander Campbell of Botuarymore. Brms recorded 1672-77.-1 and 4· Gyronny of eight, gold and black. 2. (e) William Campbell of Tulloch, baptised 9th October 1643. (/) James Campbell, baptised 14th June 1646. (k) Colin Campbell. (1) William Campbell. (j) Walter Campbell, died before September 1679. He married third, Christian, daughter of Robert Mushet of Craighead. She died 1697, having had:- (k) James Campbell, died c. 1678. (I) Charles Campbell, died before 17th October 1707. In all he had twenty-seven children. Brms recorded 1672-77.-As above with red bordure. CREST: A boar's kead erased proper. MOTTO: "Follow me." SUPPORTERS: Two stags proper, attired and unguled. · (161) SIR JOHN CAMPBELL, FIFTH BARONET OF GLENURCHY, born c. 1635; died 19th March 1717. George Sinclair, sixth , who died 1676, had got into difficulties, and Sir John Campbell was the principal creditor, so he then, by misrepresentations, got himself created on 28th June 1677, EARL OF CAITHNESS, OF BREADALBANE, LORD ST. CLAIR OF BERRIEDALE AND GLENURCHY. This was annulled, and a new patent granted on 13th August r68r, but with the former precedency as EARL OF BREADALBANE AND HOLLAND, VISCOUNT OF T AY AND PAINTLAND, LORD GLENURCHY BENEDERALOCH, 0RMELIE AND WEICK, with power to nominate as successor any younger son by his first wife, and the heirs male of the body of such son, who01 failing to the heirs male of his own body, whom failing, his heirs male, whom failing, to his heirs whatsoever. He selected his second son J ohn as his heir, and on 13th December 1704, with consent of his eldest son, he entailed the Breadalbane Estates on John also and his heirs male, whom failing, his third son Colin and his heirs male, whom failing, Colin Campbell of Carwhin (No r64,d, 1) and his heirs male, whom failing. to the heirs male of the entailer. He was M.P. for Argyll­ shire t66I. He married first, 17th December 1657, Mary Rich, daughter of Henry, first Earl of Holland. She died 8th February 1666 leaving:- (a) Duncan Campbell, styled Lord Ormelie, born c. 166o; died c. 1727. He was apparently weak mentally and agreed to being passed over by his father. He is said to have married Margaret Campbell of Lawers, and to have left two sons. (b) John (No. 162). He married second, 7th April 1678, Mary Campbell, daughter of Archibald, Marquis of Argyll. She died 4th February 1691 leaving a son:- (c) Colin Campbell of Ardmaddie, died 31st March 1708, aged twenty­ nine, without lawful issue. By Mrs Mildred Littler he had a daughter, and it is said he acknowledged the mother as his wife. He recorded Brms 1672-77 as No. 16o above, but without bordure. CREST : A boar's kead erased proper. MOTTO: "Follow me." SUPPORTERS: Two slags proper, attired and unguled. (162) JOHN, SECOND EARL OF BREADALBANE, born 19th November r662; died 23rd February 1752. He married first, Frances Cavendish, daughter of Henry, second of Newcastle. She was born 25th June 166o, and died without surviving issue 4th February 1690. He married second, 2Jrd May 1695, Henrietta, daughter of Sir Edward Villiers, and sister of Edward, first Earl of Jersey. She died rst February 1719-20, leaving a son:- 58 HOUSE OF GLENURCHY.

(163) JOHN, THIRD EARL OF BREADALBANE, baptised roth March I6gS-g6; died 26th January 1782. He was M.P. for Saltash 1727-34, and for Oxford City 1741. He married first, 2oth February 1717-18, Amabel .Grey, daughter and co-heiress of Henry, Duke of Kent She died 2nd March 1727, having had a son :- (a) Henry Campbell, died 12 th May 1727, aged six. . He married second, 23rd J anuary 1730, Arabella, daughter and co­ heiress of John Pershall. She died rst September 1762, having had :­ (b) George Campbell, died 24th March 1744, aged about twelve. (c) J ohn, Lord Glenurchy, born 20th September 1738; died s.p. and v.p. 14th November 1771. He married, 26th September 1761, Wilielma, daughter and co-heiress of William Maxwell of Preston. The titles and estates then went to his distant cousin, as below :- ( 164) COLIN CAMPBELL OF MOCHASTER, third son of No. 159, born I616; died 22nd October 1668. Will recorded r 5th J uly 1669 at Dunblane. H.e married, Contract dated roth and rlth March 1641, Margaret, daughter of Sir Alexander Menzies of that Ilk. She died 168r, having had :- (a) Duncan Campbell, born 18th November 1647; died ~~· July 1675· He recorded Srms r672-77.- r and 4· Gyrotmy of eiglzt, gold and black. 2. He married 15th April I677, Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. Andrew Pringle. (d) Robert Campbell of Borland, born 2nd September r66o; died February 1704. Will recorded at Dunkeld 15th May 1705. He married, Contract 20th July 1700, Janet, daughter of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, and bad a son:- (r) Colin of Carwhin, born 1704; died 30th March 1772. He married, 28th January 1758, Elizabeth, daughter of Archibald Campbell of Stonefield, and had :- (a) John, fourth Earl (No. 165). (b) Colin of Carwhin, born 12th December 1763 ; died s.p. 27th June r 792. (e) Alexander Campbell, born 4th April 1662 ; died s.p. before 13th December 1704 (165) JOHN, FOURTH EARL OF BREADALBANE, son of No. 164, d, r, born 30th March 1762 ; died 29th March 1834. On 13th November r8o6 he was created BREADALBANE OF TAYMOUTH CASTLE, and on 12th September 1831 MARQUIS OF BREADALBANE and EARL OF 0 RMELIE, to him and the heirs male of his body, and all in the Peerage of the . He married, 3rd September 1793, Mary Turner, daughter and co-heiress of David Gavin of Langton House, Berwick, and had an only son :- ( 166) JOHN, SECOND MA RQU IS OF BREJ\DALBANE, born 26th October 1796; died s.p. 8th November r862. George Baillie of Jerviswood, then heir-presumptive to the Earldom of Haddington. She was born 29th June 1803, and died 28th August 1861. On his death the titles conferred on his father in 18o6 and 1831 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom became extinct, but his titles in the Peerage of Scotland devolved as belo.w :- (167) WILLIAM CAMPBELL, fifth son of No. 159, born about 1621; killed at Stirling 1648. He married first, 18th February 1740, Effie M'Nicol, and second, 9th December 1747, Susanna, daughter of Duncan Campbell. She died c. 1793, leaving:- (a) Colin (No. 170). (b) James (No. 171). He married, 1791, Jean, daughter of William Butter of Brae­ house. She died Ist March 1842. (e) William Campbell, born 16th November 176o; died s.p. October 1791. (f) John (No. 174). (g) Alexander Campbell, born 31st March 1767 ; executed 24th August 1808 for killing Captain Boyd in an alleged duel. He married a daughter of William Bowie of Camsiscan, and had:- (1) William Bowie Stewart of Cloichfoldich, born 1803; died s.p. 1 Itb June 1847. He married first, 16th March 1830, Sarah Priscilla, daughter of]. Fearnside, Esq., and second, 5th April 1838, Janet, only child of Robert Stewart of Cloichfoldich. (170) COLIN CAMPBELL OF GLENFALLOCH, born 30th December 1749 ; died 4th June 18o6. He married first, c. 1776, "Miss Drummond," really a daughter of Gregor M'Gregor of Inverardran. She died c. 1778. He married second, Mrs Constable, and had :- (a) William Erskine Campbell of Glenfalloch, born 10th May 1784 ; died 22nd July 18o6. He married Susanna, daughter of Charles Campbell of Lochdochart, and had:- (I) John Breadalbane of Glenfalloch, died 4th January 1812, aged ten. (171 ) ]AMES CAMPBELL, second son of No. 169, born 30th March 1754; died 24th October 18o6. In 1781 he eloped with Eliza Maria Blanchard, wife of Christopher Ludlow, a medical practitioner in Chipping-Sudbury, Gloucestershire. Christopher Ludlow died January 1784, and it was on the question of the marriage of J ames Campbell with the widow that the Breadalbane succession case turned. The decided, with one Lord dissenting, in favour of the marriage. She died in 1828, having had:- . (a) William John Lamb Campbell of Glenfalloch, date of birth unknown, but baptised 2oth January 1788, died 4th June 1850. He married 21st May 1810, Rosanna, daughter of John Doughty, and had:- ( I) John (No. 172). (b) John Campbell, died in infancy. (c) Breadalbane Gavin Campbell, born 11th October 1796; died 9th December 1803. (172) JOHN ALEXANDER GAVIN, SIXTH EARL OF BREADALBA NE, born 30th March 1824; died 2oth March 1871. He married 20th April 1853, Mary Theresa, daughter of John Edwards, and had :- (a) Gavin (No. 173). (b) Ivan Campbell, born 17th November 1859; died 16th March 1917. Married 23rd July 1884, Margaret Elizabeth Diana Agar Ellis, daughter of William, third Earl of Normanton, and had:- (1) Ian Edward Herbert, born 14th June 1885. (c) Norman Campbell, born and died 1866. (173) GAVIN, SEVENTH EARL OF BREADALBANE, born 9th April 1854. On 25th March 1873, he was created BARON BREADALBANE OF KENMORE, and on 11th July 1885, MARQUIS OF BREADALBANE and EARL OF 0RMELIE, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He married 13th June 1788, Janet, daughter of William Butter of Brachouse, and had :- (a) Charles William Campbell, born 14th March 1789; died 18th january 1861. Married 14th March 1832, Charlotte, daughter of John Campbell of Kinloch. She died 1st June r88o, leaving:- ( !) Charles William, born 4th April 1836 ; died 1894. Married, 1888, Gwynnedd, daughter of William Edward Brinkman, leaving a son :- (a) Charles William, born 1889. (2) John Erskine, died unmarried 29th May 1889. (3) Colin George Lorne, born 1848 ; died August 1890. He married, 1886, Robina, daughter of Robert Fraser, and had a son :- (a) Charles Colin Kinloch, born 1889. (b) George Andrew Campbell, born 9th July 1791; died 3rd July 1852. Married, 2nd August 1830, Margaret, daughter of Colonel James Campbell of Glenfeochan. She was born 16th January r8o8, and died 5th February 1884 They had:- (1) John Breadalbane Campbell, born 30th June 1839. Married, 1873, Katherine M'Donald. (2) A son, stillborn 2nd April 1849. (175) ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL OF LAGVINSHOCK, fifth son of Sir Duncan, first Baronet of Glenurchy (No. 157). He died roth November 1640. His father gave him a quarter of the lands of Monzie on 30th October 1594, and the lbertlands of Monzie 13th January 1001. He married first, Catherine, daughter of John Graham of Inchbrakie, Contract 14th April 1002. She died c. 1007, leaving a son:- (a) Duncan (No. 176). He married second, Christian, daughter of A lear Robertson of Inchma­ granoch, Contract 2nd December 1614, and had issue:- (b) Alexander Campbell, drowned s.p. 1652. He obtained the lands of Glentarken 23rd May 1649, and was succeeded in these lands by his brother Patrick. (c) Patrick Campbell of Glentarken, married Catherine, daughter of Patrick Murray of Ochtertyre, and had issue.
