Rakaia, on Sunday, 11 June you absolutely shone when the Mid-Canterbury senior division rugby final was held at the Rakaia domain. The weather was perfect and there wasn’t a blade of grass out of place on the field. The opposition supporters came in their hundreds but the Rakaia supporters outnumbered them by at least two to one. I lost count of the cars parked on the domain’s hill once I got to 80. I have never seen so many people at the Rakaia domain; all enjoying the location, the atmosphere and the fantastic game of rugby on display.

The rugby game was more exciting and had more ‘edge of your seat’ action than what the Lions vs Crusaders game produced the night before. With the half time score only just in Rakaia’s favour at 7 - 5, the tension continued for the whole 80 minutes. And with under 10 minutes remaining, Rakaia was leading 12 - 10. All of Rakaia held their collective breathes, praying that the boys showed the needed discipline and had enough energy/courage to hold out from the relentless Southbridge side. Alas, a penalty is given to Southbridge out in front, the final score a 13 - 12 loss to Rakaia.

Rakaia seniors you can hold your heads high. The game on Sunday was one of the most entertaining games I have seen in a long while. As you can tell by the numbers in attendance, Rakaia is behind you 100 percent.

Ramblings from the Editor Passion. One of the enjoyable aspects creating the Rakaia News is meeting all the locals who are passionate about their hobbies, families, sport, heritage or what ever. I might not understand their passion but I can appreciate it. This issue the contributors and subject matter are definitely passionate. As you can tell from the front page story, Rakaia is passionate about their local team sports and their huge asset of a domain.

Tui Guru is always passionate about whatever the topic is that week; but his topic this issue is about one of our elected councillors getting passionate about rocks.

Councillor Malcolm is passionate about trying to get the local transit authority to see that life does exist beyond the Rolleston passing lanes. We in Mid-Canterbury are just as entitled to adequate roading as those in Auckland and are. Good luck, Mark. Keep up the good fight.

Now the Rakaia Library is looking for some people who can become passionate about ensuring the survival of our library. The library has a long history of passionate people ensuring its survival. Having lived in Rakaia and volunteered where and when required, I know that our library is in no danger of closing.

Having Rebecca in this role means we will be at the forefront of the professional development, therefore better outcomes for our Champs.

Councillor’s Comment The council had a meeting with the transit authority in the last couple of weeks and they showed their disinterest in our plight for better roading. It seems they are only interested in major infrastructure works, for example the Southern Motorway from Rolleston to hook up to Brougham Street, Christchurch and the Northern arterial route of Christchurch, so the only issues that affect Mid-Cantabrians are a little bit of spending on rumble lines etc. So, no pedestrian crossings or widening for truck parking on SH1 for Rakaia, and the Ashburton Bridge is looking even further in the distance than ever. Their advice was to watch this space for electric bicycle travel. We have Councillor Braam, who likes his new bike but he’s of Dutch descent and they all like bikes over there, JUN JUL especially good if you don’t have to pedal into a nor’wester . 21 5 When are those cyclists and drivers of electric vehicles going to pay road user charges, like the rest of us? At the moment they can recharge their vehicles for free at the local charging station , and you, the shareholder of your local electricity lines company, is currently subsidising their fuel.

Also, we were told to expect extra trains between Timaru and Rolleston. Who on earth would want to live in between a state highway and a railway line? Friday after 11pm is the quietest time, especially with the help of a little self-medication.

After watching the TV and Nigel Latta onWhat Next? this week. I say yes, the future is already here; the Jetsons are our new neighbours, robots are in our workplaces, kids are on hover boards and we have autonomous driverless cars. I bought one of these cars recently which brakes automatically when I get too close to the car in front and it also steers me back into the lane when I wander out of it - and they tell me that’s a type two and now they are producing a type five. My lady friend tells me, in most uncertain terms, that she wants none of it because she likes to be in control. I can’t disagree....

I bet Tui Guru and that other big rugby coach fella can’t wait till we can get ourselves home on a Friday night safely without personal responsibility, then maybe the onus will be on Google. Let’s take care out there on our roads. Watch out for potholes use the phone app (Snap Send Solve).

Also watch out for that other driver - they are always in the wrong!

View from the South You know the ole Tui Guru prefers the positive to the negative - the glass is half-full (or in the Tui Guru’s case it’s usually empty). So, instead of looking at the negative, I’m going to praise our Council or councillors in this case. Yes, we could all complain about Thompson’s Track being more like a goat track; where do we put the council chambers; the cost of parking on East Street; having only one bridge going over the Ashburton River; our water races with no water; our pool being too small or too hot in summer (go figure); the price of an inadequate rubbish bag or no rubbish collection; the cost of our rates; or the Council’s priorities being Christmas lights for Ashburton and so on and so on.

But I’m not going to mention any of that. What I do want to mention is the other day, in The Ashburton Courier on the corner of page 3, there was a small story entitled “Rock produced at council”. Now, thinking that the story must have been about a bit of biff or an angry ratepayer throwing a rock through the council chambers, I inquisitively read on only to find that our ex Rakaia councillor, now Deputy Mayor, Cr Brown, produced an actual rock at a Service Delivery Committee meeting. A rock it appears that had many mates and they were spread out all over our council country roads. Cr Brown had taken a novel way of making a point by bringing said rock to meet council staff and management. It seems now that, after this dramatic display of show and tell, the contractors may need to sharpen up their act.

That’s what we need more of at this level - council members who enjoy the dramatic - and what a great initiative. I do wonder how Cr Brown will bring a pothole to the next meeting, or a broken drain or dodgy footpath. With this being the new model, Mr Brown, maybe take half a pothole - the full half, remember - to your next council gathering. At this rate the new council building will need to be bigger than AMI Stadium.
