Dear Roger Good to speak to you on the phone yesterday and please do know my continued prayers and support for you and Mary. Please do contact me if you want a chat, or I can help in anyway, or if you'd rather talk with someone else then i'd be happy to suggest someone if that's what you'd prefer. In terms of books that you could read. here are three suggestions: http://veriteshop.co.uk/product/reflections-lords-prayer http://veriteshop.co.uk/product/reflections-psalm-23 http://veriteshop.co.uk/product/reflections-on-the-beatitudes

I can remember a friend recommending these resources by Ken Curtis who felt led to produce them for those with cancer having being given a very grim diagnosis himself. I can’t say that I read them personally but I believe Ken looks at the subjects/passages/verses from a perspective of dying and living/healing with/from cancer.

I will continue to think about other possibilities. Do take care and hopefully see you soon. We are away for a week 20-27th Aug, but i'm back from 28th Aug. God Bless

Dave

Hi Dave, In My Humble Opinion Penny plus the brief you have described in the email are probably right for the time being. I’m vaguely disappointed not to have been more involved in the discussions but they have produced the right result.

For the first time the doctors were talking about me not being around in six months time subject to every caveat you’ve never heard of. At least that indicates I don’t need to worry about finding the next vicar.

1 All the best Roger Subject: Music Co-Ordinator at St Luke's

Dear PCC & Staff (Copied to the musicians who have kindly been covering over the last few months, plus Anne who coordinates the singers and used to assist Jeremy with music workshops, plus Tim who looks after av) We are all very grateful to the wonderful musicians who have been 'covering' the music at St Luke's over the past 8 months, while we have been in the current difficult situation with Jeremy as Music Director. We are all very grateful for their ministry and willingness to support and enable our sung worship at St Luke's. We are still unsure how long the current situation will continue and in light of this as a staff team we have been holding some discussions, praying, and doing some planning. I am pleased to say that Penny Lazenby has kindly agreed to act as "Music Co-Ordinator" at St Luke's for the time being. Penny has agreed to give the equivalent of one day per week to co- ordinate the music at St Luke's, and you may have seen that she has been 'advertising' for people to step forward to assist with the music. If you know any musicians, or budding musicians, in the congregation please encourage them to speak to Penny. Penny brings not only her musical skill to the role, but also her long experience of being involved and helping to co-ordinate music in local secondary schools. I have discussed the role with Penny and the main areas where she feels she can give her time and energy are: 1. Co-Ordinating musicians for the various services 2. Facilitate a 'music night' (possibly thurs eve) for musicians and singers to practice, learn new songs, and spend time together in prayer and getting to know one another 3. Liaise with the church office to ensure necessary resources available for the music ministry at St Luke's. 4. Plan ahead and rehearse special choirs/groups for special services e.g. Christmas 5. Look into possibility of doing some music with the children's groups, and that they could possibly bring into services 6. Look to establish 'music groups' to take on aspects of services, or all of certain services 7. Monthly meeting of all music group leaders to coordinate choices of songs etc 8. Liaise with av team on any technical requirements

Please do pray for Penny as she takes on this role and please do offer your practical support in anyway you can, and encourage others to as well. Penny will take on the role in Sept, and will be introduced to the 'church' at the services on 18th sept and prayed for then.

Chris and I continue to look at other options to supplement our music provision at St Luke's and will work with Penny on these.

Any thoughts, comments, queries please do let me know.

God Bless

Dave

Dear Bishop Michael

Re: Jeremy Cooke, St Luke’s, Watford

After much thought and prayer, I am writing to express my concern about the situation regarding our Music Director at St Luke’s Watford. It has been a very long time to wait for due process to be carried out but now that there has been an acquittal on all charges, I am concerned that all parties are treated with the compassion which they deserve.

As Safeguarding Officer for the church, I have seen the contract which was drawn up for Jeremy, relating to his church attendance and participation in the life of the church. Jeremy played the organ at the weddings of both our daughters but was not allowed to play for my husband’s funeral last October, which I understood at the time but I still feel disappointed. As a friend, whose children have been taught by him and of whose choir and orchestra I have been a member, though not part of the trial process, I am concerned that he should be able to be part of the congregation as soon as possible.

Some church members have been through a particularly hard time in the last 15 months or so and I know that this would be hard for any vicar to bear. The news that we might now be subject to a long wait for Jeremy to return to his post as Music Director, should he so wish, is very hard for us all to bear, not least our Vicar.

I am writing to plead with you to act with compassion to ensure that the next stage is dealt with as quickly as possible for everyone’s sakes. I am aware that Jeremy Hirst is away on holiday but hope that the matter will dealt with as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Mary Bowen

Alan Julie Jen Gareth Clare Caitlin maria Adam Rebecca Let us pray.

Lord God, We thank you that you are a compassionate Father, Who listens to us and hears us. We bring our prayers to you now. Some of them are of long standing and remain on our hearts; Others may only be half formed in our hearts And need to be under the guidance of Your Spirit, As we do not really know what to pray for So that you will is done.

Lord God, We bring to You Your world, With its disasters and sadnesses. We think of those suffering the latest Hurricane Nate, even before the clearing up from the previous storms is complete. We remember all those who were so suddenly and tragically bereaved in Las Vegas shooting this week. We think of places where there is political unrest, Especially in Catalonia in Spain. Give wisdom and strength to all those who face difficult problems And peace and comfort to all in need.

Lord in your mercy….Hear our prayer. Lord, We thank you for our bit of church here at St Luke’s. Thank you for our leaders. We pray that you will help them as they seek Your will about our worship and life here. Thank you for our Life Groups and all that they do to encourage and support us in our walk with you. Help us this term to seek opportunities to invite others to join us. We pray especially for the Alpha course which has started and all the planned activities to which we can invite our friends in the next few weeks. Bless too the ministries of the Pastoral, Prayer and Healing groups, That we may be nurtured and brought to fullness in Christ.

Help us also to see ourselves as a part of the wider church in Watford, In the UK and across the world. We pray for Christians across Watford, That we may be bring blessing to our town as we work together. We ask your blessing on our mission partners, Thinking of Ruth Guiness in Malawi And doctors Sujai and Lavanya in India. We pray for all those Christian organisations like TearFund and Christian Aid who are seeking to bring relief where there is famine, warfare or suffering.

Lord in your mercy….Hear our prayer.

Father God, We pray for our families. We thank you that you have blessed us with our family members. Some of them are a sheer delight but some of them are going through hard times at present, where we need your wisdom and the example of your sacrificial love To know how to react and what to say. Help us to lay all our needs before you And to trust you that all things will work together for good.

We especially pray for those who are ill And those suffering the pain of bereavement. Lord, we thank you for those who have responded well to medical treatment, And our prayers have been answered. In a moment of silence we lift those known to us Who need your healing and comfort.

Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

2017 has been a year of many changes and began with Jess and Andy moving to Sheffield, where Andy is now a Minister to Students at Christchurch Fulwood. As their house needed some alterations they have now relocated temporarily and will move back in at the start of 2018. John has also moved to Sheffield, renting a flat with his friend. Pete and Liz may be in a larger house in St Albans by the time the turkey is being cooked. Liz has become a paid employee at the Planning Dept for St Albans City Council, a big life change, having passed her MA with Merit.

There have also been additions to the family, with the birth of Toby in April, thus evening up the number of grandchildren to 4. Roger’s nephew Matt married Anja in Sweden during the summer. We were honoured to be able to hear her playing Bach’s Ave Maria on her violin at Ruth (Roger sister)’s funeral back in January. Next year it will be Simon Goodwin’s marriage to Leonie and we all wish them well. Their sister Rachel has now returned to work, following the birth of Arthur in November 2016.

All these changes have meant quite a bit of driving in the last year, as I still go down to Bournemouth regularly as well as carrying out grandparent duties from time to time. This has been fitted round my hobbies of singing, gardening, cooking and walking as well as puzzles (Candy Crush and Monument Valley once I have finished the “i”). Watford Philharmonic has continued its commemoration of the First World War by performing the Bach B minor Mass this term. Jess enrolled me into the Nourishing Gardening Club on Facebook and I post photos of my garden flowers each Sunday. I am still at St Luke’s church, where I am safeguarding co-ordinator and a member of the music group.

The health walk in the local park is good for meeting people and lunching afterwards but nothing compares with a sea view. I have considered whether there should be a Bridesmaid Appreciation Society as friends have rallied round and helped us through this past year. As well as a flying visit from Angela, I also returned to Morecambe Bay and was astonished at being able to sit out in the garden one moment but then needing to beat a hasty retreat indoors as the wind and the rain, not to mention lightning, made its presence felt.

A week’s holiday in Saint-Cyprien during August was quite a different beach scene. It was fun to fly out to Perpignan and also interesting to meet up with the expats for Sunday worship, at a very informal service in a modern rented Catholic Church. The Castle at Carcasonne was well worth the visit and we enjoyed roaming round the street market at Céret. I have rediscovered the fact that I can swim too.

It was not as adventurous as John’s trip to Asia for nearly 3 months. He started out by going to Everest Base Camp in Nepal and then travelled to India, China and Japan. His other achievement was that his background music was nominated for the West of England Royal Television Society awards. The film “Sixteen” won its category of Best Film.

Looking back on last year’s letter there seemed to be so much change, with more to come in 2018. This has indeed proved to be the case as Liz and Pete moved to a larger house in St Albans; by September the renovations were underway and they moved across the road to rent a neighbouring property. Meanwhile, Jess and Andy completed their final house move at the end of January. What a lot of boxes and temporarily inaccessible items!

Here we all are on my birthday.

There have been some wonderful family events this year:

We rented a cottage for seven and enjoyed a very snowy Easter holiday in the Peak district. Meanwhile Roger’s nephew, Simon, married Leonie. At the end of April, Roger’s Aunty Win celebrated her 90 th birthday with a celebration lunch. Baby George arrived on May 22 nd , a baby brother for Arthur, and Rachel (Roger’s niece) and Tony are very proud parents. Chloe, Tom and their third cousin Jessica all started school in September. Andy and Cousin Christine’s daughter, Laurel, are expecting again in February so we wish them well. Jake, my great nephew, became engaged to Esther and they are planning their wedding for next August. In September, (his mother and my niece), confusingly also named Esther, was ordained as a Baptist minister in Wallingford. Grandson Toby was baptised at Christchurch Fulwood in October.

What a glorious summer we had, so gardening was a real joy. I am still eating the onions, beans, tomatoes, beetroot and courgettes which I grew. Liz’s new house also has a plentiful supply of apples and pears which have been a pleasure to cook. I have continued singing in Watford Philharmonic Choir and supplemented their four concerts with days out on singing courses. The latest event was an afternoon at Eton College with 120 other amateurs performing newly commissioned pieces for the Eton Choirbook Project.

The only Chemistry I have done this year was to help Pete’s nephew Daniel with his GCSE revision and it was happy news to hear that his exam success enabled him to start training to be a chef. The rest of the family are working hard - Liz gained promotion in the Planning Office, Jess continues to see her Business Coach career thrive and John was nominated for a Jerusalem Award for Christian digital media.

This sounds a wonderfully happy year but it has been punctuated by an unprecedented number of funerals. In July, I went to Manchester to celebrate the life of Norman Baron, a teacher at Arnold High School for Girls who ran the Cleveleys CSSM Beach Mission, where I became a Christian. His card to me earlier in the year included the words, “Keep going on,” so that has become my motto.

Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a healthy and exciting New Year.

“When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple” was quoted to me this week as I arrived for the Herts Health Walk sporting a purple plaster cast. The NHS had 16 colours for me to choose from so I chose the Advent colour and will try not to be too outrageous for the next 6 weeks. The broken wrist was the result of a fall in the car park following Pippa’s 8 th birthday party, a painful end to a lovely day. I am now adjusting my Christmas plans which were, for once, quite clear in my mind.

We are celebrating Christmas at Pete and Liz’s refurbished and enlarged house and I have already attended her 40 th birthday party there in the summer. It does not seem possible that Liz has entered a new decade, nor that Andy and Jess have celebrated their 10 th wedding anniversary. It has also been good to celebrate Esther Jane Mason’s Big Birthday in Wallingford and Esther Mary’s marriage to Jake up in York. I seem to have done a lot of driving this year, which I very much enjoy. The New Year was spent down in Bournemouth where the whole world seems to walk on the beach on New Year’s Day. It was even warm enough to dine in the open air at Durley Chine. There have been family reunions too, with niece Rachel Pierrepoint over from Australia with all the family in October, and the inspiring funeral of Cousin Shirley at the end of June.

The rest of the time has been shunting between family in Sheffield and family in St Albans, helping everyone to keep working even when there have been INSET days. John returned home again in September after nearly 2 years in Sheffield as film work remains busy, taking him to New York, Chicago and 10 Downing Street. He is also nearer to his girlfriend, Alina, who lives and works in Colchester.

Singing with Watford Philharmonic Choir continues and singing workshops in St Albans and Bushey have been a great way to spend several Saturdays this year. Gardening has also been a lovely way to occupy my time and I am in the process of collecting together more recipes to cook the food that I grow. I am still addicted to Hanjie puzzles, once I have finished the challenges in the daily i newspaper. Now I am learning about WordPress, so that I can help with the churches webpages.

In March our vicar became the and I was very relieved not to be the churchwarden this time, choosing the new incumbent. I have remained as the Parish Safeguarding Officer, and have spent time training to be a Dementia Friend, learned about Domestic Violence and have also passed my Food Safety Certificate. The latter enables me to help at Terrific Tuesday coffee mornings as well as cook for the annual TearFund Big Quiz. The vacancy was mercifully short and we are now in a period of waiting to see what changes our vicar will introduce in the New Year. I am expecting that a culture of prayer will develop. The members of our Lifegroup are all quite excited at the prospect.

Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a healthy and exciting New Year.

• you have held a Great Britain or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 • you are not disqualified from driving (there are different rules for medium or large vehicles, minibus or bus drivers - the traffic commissioner for your area will decide whether to grant your entitlement to drive these vehicles) • you have not been, and would not be, refused a licence for medical reasons • you keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence • the entitlement on your licence has not expired Your health

If you have a medical condition that could affect your driving, you must tell us immediately. For more information on medical conditions you need to tell us about visit our website at www.dvla.gov.uk/driverhealth.

News

St Luke’s News. The summer edition of the church magazine is out. Find it online on the church website.

Midweek Holy Communion to take place at 10am on Tuesday 18 th August in St Luke’s (all socially distanced). We especially encourage those who have not been to church yet to join in what will certainly be a small service, as a beginning to return to St Luke’s.

Volunteer Delivery Drivers required urgently by Restore Hope, Latimer to make deliveries of both fresh food boxes and frozen meals to families in the local area who are currently facing challenging circumstances and financial crisis. Deliveries take place between midday and around 2.30pm, usually on Wednesdays & Thursdays. Training is provided. For more info email [email protected] or talk to Phil Boxhall who is a volunteer driver with them.

The Church is open for our 10.30am service on Sundays. It will continue to be livestreamed for those who are unable to come. We will be observing government guidelines re mask wearing, social distancing, and hand hygiene, so please come prepared to be directed in these (e.g. spaced seating with lots of gaps). Children and youth groups are available. The Evening Service will continue online for now. We are currently assessing how we can provide coffee safely after the morning service. Please note: Bibles won’t be available so please bring your own if you need one. Please don’t come if you have any C19 symptoms. If you are in an 'at risk group' please continue to follow government guidelines.

Partnership Fund Appeal. St Luke’s is supporting the Hanamaki Church building project in Japan which led by Mark and Sarah Gelsthorpe and supported by OMF. We will be shortly closing the appeal so any final donations would be most welcome as soon as possible. Further details can be found in the June magazine or by contacting Bill Miller. Any donations towards the project can be given through the St Luke’s Giving page on the website. Thank you.

Children & Youth on Sundays over the Summer . ‘ Paul’s Postcards’. There will be blended groups for all ages in church garden with the opportunity to join in on zoom if that suits better. More info and details from Lydia and Neil.

Keswick and New Wine. Have you enjoyed these online Christian festivals? If so we would love to hear from you! Please send any articles to Margaret Forester at [email protected].

Complex Needs Officer wanted YMCA are looking for a full time experienced housing support officer with experience of supporting people with substance abuse/misuse issues. For more details visit them https://oneymca.org/work-for-us/current-vacancies/

St Luke's Covid 19 Emergency Fund. Although we personally may not have seen our income reduced during this period there are those in our congregation, and known to St. Luke's locally, who are in need of financial support. If anybody is able to contribute to the St Luke's Covid-19 Emergency Fund to enable support to be provided in exceptional circumstances it would be most appreciated. Giving may be done in the usual way online, with the gift earmarked as above. If the fund is not fully used the remainder will be applied to Charitable purposes. Anne Bolton and Phil Boxhall, Churchwardens.
