WELCOME TO THE 6TH YEAR OF THE ATLANTIC JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL!

You, our audience, have come to expect a diverse range of films at the AJFF. This year’s selection will not disappoint. Films run the gamut. You’ll find yourselves entertained, challenged and even enlightened. Our speakers and film presenters have their own stories to tell: Amara Bangura is a Sierra Leonean journalist and Communications Officer at the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers’ Initiative. He’ll introduce the filmFig Tree, a semi-autobiographical first feature about adolescence and young love amidst the Ethiopian civil war. Filmgoers told us they wanted more shorts so this year we’re offering a series of five, all shot in Israel, some by students at the Sam Spiegel Film & TV School in Jerusalem. You’ll really enjoy them. And don’t forget the Gala Party at Pier 21. Think dim lights, platters of hors d’oeuvres, and beautiful pastries. It follows the French comedy My Polish Honeymoon which has some surreal yet humorous moments. Producer David Fishelson brings his filmGolda’s Balcony, a one-woman show about . This closing film packs a punch. Written by playwright William Gibson, it was the longest running one-woman show in Broadway history. Fishelson will be on hand after the film for a Q&A. I suspect there will be many questions for him. See you at the movies. Lynn Rotin, AJFF Chair

AJFF MANDATE

The Atlantic Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is presented by the Atlantic Jewish Council, a not-for-profit society in Nova Scotia. The mission of the AJFF is to provide an opportunity for the public to experience the Jewish world through film. Our intentions are to celebrate diversity; to promote cultural awareness; to educate and support curiosity and learning; to spark conversation and questioning; and most importantly to inspire a greater understanding of Jewish life. We invite you to join us. JEWISH FILM FESTIVALS

In 1980 a group of people took a chance on starting a Jewish film festival in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Thirty-six years later, 35,000 people attend over 120 screenings annually over three weeks. Currently, there are more than one hundred Jewish film festivals around the world including in Africa and Hong Kong. The Halifax-based AJFF opened its festival doors six years ago.

DIRECTOR Michal Aviad PRODUCERS Moshe Edery, Leon Edery, Amir Harel, Ayelet Kait CAST Liron Ben-Shlush, Oshri Cohen, Menashe Noy DISTRIBUTOR Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber COUNTRY Israel YEAR 2018 RUNNING TIME 93 minutes Orna (Liron Ben Shlush) is the mother of three young children with a husband struggling to start his own restaurant. To help support her family, Orna returns to the workplace, landing a job with a former army superior, Benny (Menashe Noy), who is now a successful real estate developer. While Orna embraces her new position and tries to balance its demands with her home life, she begins to experience escalating sexual harassment from her boss. Her rapid rise through the ranks and her increasing fi nancial success seem to parallel a pattern of predatory behaviour which ultimately brings her career and marital relationship to the brink. This timely and devastating story is expertly told by long-time feminist fi lmmaker Michal Aviad.

DIRECTOR Avi Nesher PRODUCERS David Silber, Avi Nesher, Moshe and Leon Edery, David M. Milch CAST Sasson Gabai, Joy Rieger, Yuval Segal, Maya Dagan, Nathan Goshen, Avigail Harari DISTRIBUTOR Strand Releasing COUNTRY Israel YEAR 2018 RUNNING TIME 112 minutes Anat Abadi, a bright and intense young woman, long part of Tel Aviv’s wild club scene, has found God. Renouncing promiscuity, pork, and smartphones for a life of solemn devotion, she moves to Jerusalem, enrolls in an ultra-orthodox seminary, and gets engaged to a charismatic musician who’s also recently found religion. Anat’s grandfather Shlomo—a wary widowed psychologist and avowed old-school atheist—is shocked by his granddaughter’s sudden embrace of religious zealotry and her denouncement of the family’s secular ways. Shlomo is desperate to force Anat off her new path, from which there will soon be no turning back. The ensuing roller coaster ride, by turns suspenseful, poignant, and humorous, will test the strength of their resolve while offering them a last chance at a personal and family reckoning and—could it be?—a modicum of redemption. The characters’ warring personal convictions and intimate anxieties in the clash between secular and religious worldviews also come to embody the struggle for identity animating present-day Israel.

Pressured to find an appropriate suitor, serendipity leads to a passionate courtship with Ivan, a non-Jewish writer who shows her a world of possibilities beyond her sheltered life. As their feelings deepen, Ariela must weigh their unsanctioned relationship against rejection by her Syrian-Jewish family and community, where religious values and traditions run deep. Bridging the divide between generations and cultures, writer-director Isaac Cherem’s directorial debut deftly blends romantic comedy with an incisive feminist journey of discovery and self-determination.

ABOUT THE AJC

The Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) has been the cornerstone of Jewish life in the Atlantic provinces since 1975, acting as the organized Jewish community’s representative and program/service provider for non-religious matters. With only a small staff complement and a modest budget, the AJC relies on the support of over 100 volunteers across Atlantic Canada to move the needle on our seven strategic priorities: • Building a sense of Jewish community across Atlantic Canada; • Strengthening Jewish identity amongst the Jews of Atlantic Canada; • Reinforcing the regional identity of the Atlantic Canadian Jewish community; • Supporting Israel; • Educating about the Holocaust and human rights; • Fostering relationships with and representing the Atlantic Jewish population to all levels of government, academic institutions, and Jewish and general organizations at both the national and local level; and • Educating the community of Atlantic Canada at large about Judaism. The AJC is happy to once again present the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival, this year celebrating its sixth anniversary! Please know that our door is always open should you want to learn more about, get involved with, or partner on any of our year-round activities. We hope you enjoy the show!
