This happens when events beyond your control unexpectedly slide into your orbit with an altogether wondrous effect. Which is pretty much what happened when playwright Bekah Brunstetter got an idea for a play about a bake shop whose deeply religious owner is asked to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple — at a time when the politics of the day were buzzing with cases of similar real-life situations. But Brunstetter, a successful TV producer and writer (NBC’sThis Is Us and Starz’s American Gods), went a step further in her play,The Cake. Della, the baker, has known and cherished the young woman who’s about to be married since she was a baby. So imagine her consternation when she discovers that this beautiful child she so adores is about to marry… a woman. That’s the situation, a little complicated and very perplexing. It gained traction when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission — a 2012 case involving a baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Brunstetter, who grew up in a devout and happy Southern Baptist family in Winston-Salem, makes no bones about feeling caught in the middle — with an enduring appreciation for the warm Christian embrace she knew as a child and still enjoys, and the gay perspective that she has grown to appreciate as a straight adult.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 Fadi Kheir Fadi LETTERS FROM THE LEADERSHIP The New York Philharmonic’s 2019–20 season certainly saw it all. We recall the remarkable performances ranging from Berlioz to Beethoven, with special pride in the launch of Project 19 — the single largest commissioning program ever created for women composers — honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Together with Lincoln Center we unveiled specific plans for the renovation and re-opening of David Geffen Hall, which will have both great acoustics and also public spaces that can welcome the community. In March came the shock of a worldwide pandemic hurtling down the tracks at us, and on the 10th we played what was to be our final concert of the season. Like all New Yorkers, we tried to come to grips with the life-changing ramifications The Philharmonic responded quickly and in one week created NY Phil Plays On, a portal to hundreds of hours of past performances, to offer joy, pleasure, solace, and comfort in the only way we could. In August we launched NY Phil Bandwagon, bringing live music back to New York. Bandwagon presented 81 concerts from Chris Lee midtown to the far reaches of every one of the five boroughs. In the wake of the Erin Baiano horrific deaths of Black men and women, and the realization that we must all participate to change society, we began the hard work of self-evaluation to create a Philharmonic that is truly equitable, diverse, and inclusive. The severe financial challenge caused by cancelling fully a third of our 2019–20 concerts resulting in the loss of $10 million is obvious.

The event was hosted by Queer Eye fashion expert, upcoming memoirist and audiobook narrator, Tan France, who lent his charming personality and delightful wit to the evening’s festivities. The Audies recognizes outstanding achievement from the authors, narrators, publishers, and producers of the most talked-about audiobooks in the industry. This year’s most prestigious award, Audiobook of the Year, has been named Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone, published by Macmillan Audio. Recognized by the esteemed judging panel of Ron Charles (Book Critic for The Washington Post), Linda Holmes (Host of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour), and Lisa Lucas (Executive Director of the National Book Foundation), the Audiobook of the Year acknowledges the work that, through quality and influence, has caught the attention of the industry’s most important thought leaders.     THE ARTISTS THE PROGRAM Nature Boy / Blame It On My Youth Bobby Conte Thornton is a New York-based actor and singer who made his Broadway debut originating the role of Calogero in A Bronx Tale, directed by Robert (Eden Ahbez; Oscar Levant / Edward Herman) De Niro and Jerry Zaks. He returned to Broadway this spring singing “Another Hundred People” as P.J. in Marianne Elliott’s gender-bent revival of Company. Other New York stage credits include My Fair Lady directed by Michael Arden and Starting Here, Starting Along the Way Now directed by its lyricist, Richard Maltby, Jr. A graduate of the University of Michi- gan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, BCT starred as Danny Zuko in Grease at Paper (Benj Pasek / Justin Paul) Mill Playhouse and Enjolras in Les Misérables at the Muny while pursuing his BFA. He subsequently trained in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Upon gradua- tion, his regional stage credits include the new musical Last Days of Summer at George Time Heals Everything Street Playhouse, Two River Theater’s all-male A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the world premiere co-production of Ken Ludwig’s A Comedy of Tenors at (Jerry Herman) McCarter Theatre Center and Cleveland Play House, and three seasons at the Muny. BCT made his feature film debut in If Beale Street Could Talk, adapted and directed by Barry Jenkins. Television credits include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Madam Secretary, and Everybody Says Don’t The Code. His debut studio album, Along the Way, is available across all digital music providers.
