YYOUNGOUNG ATAT HHEARTEART CCLUBLUB The Young at Heart group members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal together on 2nd December at Trencreek Farmhouse, St Gennys. Nearly a year ago we formed the group so that we could have time and space to be sociable. It was suggested that we should have a Christmas meal together. I believe everyone had a great evening and we are looking forward to our next meeting at Eden Chapel on 4th January at 1.30 so we can plan for the forthcoming year. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. We have suggested a £1 donation when we meet to help with costs and to save for our next venture. Alison Hoather on 01566 781418

LLOCALOCAL CCOUNTRYOUNTRY WWALKSALKS

In commencing this series Gill and I looked at various local walks that could be undertaken either for just “a breath of fresh air” or to undertake a constitutional stroll, whether it’s to walk the dog or part of your own fitness regime. To this end I have endeavoured to include some cross country paths as well as some sections of country lanes. Where possible we shall include photographs and descriptions including history. Also there will be maps, possible short cuts, should the paths look likely to be too muddy, total distances and the length of time the walks are likely to take. Walk 1 Warbstow - The Grand Tour Difficulty: Moderate gradients. Distance: 2.7 Miles Time: 1½ hours Footwear: Waterproof boots when wet.

Page 14

Route.. 1 We start the walk from Warbstow War Memorial dedicated to the people of and Warb- stow who served their country in the last two world wars. Keep right past the Memorial on the main road, head up the hill on the right hand side towards Warbstow Bury.

On reaching the Bury, pass through the gate and onto the pathway where you will find a notice board giving a brief description of the Mound and its flora and fauna. Warb- stow Bury or Barrow is an iron-age earthworks or fortress consisting of double ramparts and outer walls. It is 820ft above sea level and sheep may be grazed there. Continue from the entrance to the Bury across the centre towards a small mound rising on the right at the opposite side. It is worth climbing to the top of this mound to gain a spectacular panoramic view of the countryside around. From here can be seen the white dishes of GCHQ that stand on the top of the cliffs above Mor- wenstow. On a clear day the outline of Lundy Island can be seen rising from the sea. Turning right there appears to be a lake in the distance 2 and this is Canworthy Water Solar farm reflecting the sky. Beyond this lie the hills of Dartmoor and a faint outline of Launceston Castle.

Continuing on through the next gate and leaving the Bury, follow a grass path through a field keeping on the right hand side by the hedge. Passing by some barns on the left at the bottom of the field exit through a gate onto a lane turn left past Burrow Cottage. Whilst climbing the road, turn and look back and enjoy a view of the coast. At the top of this road, turn sharp right onto the main road and after two hundred metres you will come to Tredarrup Cross where a sign points left towards Tresmeer and Downinney.

Crossing the main road and continuing down the hill towards Downinney, ahead lies Dartmoor and glimpses of surrounding fields and hills through farm gates and hedgerow gaps. On reaching the bottom of the hill you will come to a crossroad with a sign to Tresmeer and one to Downinney. Cont…...

Page 15

Bear left towards Downinney passing Lower Town Farm on your right and walkup a short hill to the old village green to the left of which was originally a livestock pound for straying cattle and other farm animals that would be restored to their owners for a payment of tuppence. The green itself was once the scene of many activities such as fetes and meetings and it is said that John Wesley preached here on several occasions. At one end of the green is where the original Manor of 3 Downinney stood which is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Continuing ahead with the green on your right, follow the road away from Downinney as it bears left. Ahead you can see the white houses of Warbstow on the hill. Upon reaching a lane that turns sharp left from the road, continue along this lane until you reach a farm at the top.

Follow the road round to the 4 right where you will pass St Werburgha’s Church at the top of the hill. This parish church was built by the Normans and dedicated to the saint, a Saxon woman, who died in the latter part of the 7th century. She was the daughter of Wolpher, King of Mercia. Her presence here is prob- ably due to the settlement of Saxons in this part of Cornwall after they pushed the Celts further down to the West.

At the bottom of the hill, the road passes over the River Inney and where it continues beside a long lane into Warbstow, follow the path with the Inney on your right. In the Spring and Summer the edges of the river are filled with ferns, pink campion and white stitchwort. As you re-enter the village you will pass by the new Community Centre on your left, followed by Carnak, a 100 year old house and Warbstow School, built in 1879. 5 Continue through the village past original old Cornish stone cottages, namely Rose Cottage on your left and Cobblers Cottage to your right then back up to the War Memorial bringing you to the end of your walk.

Westminster and have all been looking at budget issues that need to be addressed over the next few months and Government issues of funding that you may want to know more details of. Please do enquire. I think Cornwall Council finances are looking somewhat encouraging and although talk of the business rate changes coming to Cornwall still drags on, the Government now says that it should be fully refundable to Cornwall by the next general election in 2020. For instance, Cornwall Council’s decision on the Leisure Centres looks as if they are all saved in that they are being leased to a private company to run. Further good news, arrangements are nearly complete for libraries and one stop shop services. It would seem that these will all be saved following some new arrangements and, I think, one, extra library is also included in the plans.

This spring there are, of course, Cornwall Council elections. Following completion the new shape Council will have been sorted out with a reduction of 20-30 members and new policies will be in place with regard to how our members serve their constituents and their involvement at County Hall. On the Parliamentary viewpoint dismay expressed at Council recently that not one Cornish MP supported the independence of Cornwall or was prepared to speak out against the Devonwall constituency which will affect the people here in North Cornwall. In fact the member for St. Ives appears to even support a Devonwall constituency. However, Mr Steve Double MP from has now come out and spoken in opposition on this issue. This is an on-going issue of which I appeal to you, if you have strong views, write either to me or County Hall directly, expressing your views so this can be passed on to the Committee looking into the issue.

Finally, some good news with regard to EU monies being made available through two schemes, one of which is to be resolved in the Spring. There is an opportunity of match funding for businesses or an alternative scheme to encourage businesses in tourism and farming to take on new staff and benefit from this EU money. Also Charitable Organisations such as some village halls. If you are thinking of building a new village hall or seek money for repairs to a village hall or other local charity, again, if you have any involvement which you think I could help you with, please do enquire. Please do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected] or 01840 770302.
