In addition to the discipline of theatre, costuming employs several other art forms and thereby may be consider­ ed an interdisciplinary art form. Basic to the development of costumes for Hair was knowledge of literature, visual arts and history. It is necessary to read and interpret a play very carefully in terms of relating the written words of the script to the costumes of the character. The actual designing of costumes entails basic drawing and design abilities as well as a creative artistic approach. In cases where a specific historic period is being used the research often includes art history books. By studying paintings and sculpture from a specific era one is able to establish a general flavor of the time period. Costume design is an interdisciplinary art form from the stand­ point that it cannot stand alone as a separate entity and must include various art forms to be successful. It is extremely important that a designer have a firm grasp on the content and message of the play~ Hair, written by Gerome Ragni and James Rado-in 1969 can best be described as an anti-war play. The action of the play takes place in New York City in 1969 during the height of the hippy protests against the Vietnam War. This was a time of great individuality in dress and in mode of living. It was necessary, therefore to examine each character thoroughly in order to get a sense of his or her inner being. The director and designer agreed to emphasize the gentle aspect of hippies rather than concentrate on the rebelliousness of the era. In costuming an educational theatre production one of the items of greatest importance is the budget. During the late Sixties there was great emphasis placed on pre-owned clothing. Therefore, it seemed feasible to take most items from the vault and alter them to fit the actors and their roles. The following items had to be designed and construe -ad: a caftan and maternity padding for Jeanie, a satin shirt and one enormous dress which was designed to fit three actors while they performed enbloc. Musical theatre always presents the challenge of designing for the choreography. Hair was an extra challeng because of the rigors involved with the choreography. Clothing was constantly being repaired because of the strenuous leaps. It was necessary to very carefully secure wigs and hair pieces to withstand the vigorous movement involved with the choreography. Most of the costumes for Hair were coordinated rather than constructed. All of the articles of clothing and accessories that were considered costume possibilities were taken from the vault and divided into groups according to size. After carefully choosing specific items for the leads, the chorus was then costumed according to size. Chapter V discusses the costume design and technique for each of the lead characters. It has been the intent of this writer to describe tne interdisciplinary techniques used in designing a production in general and specifically Hair. It is assumed that this project will be useful to the writer's career development and to other designers should they choose a project. The Sixties will be recorded in American history as the Decade of the Revolt of Youth. Historians may note that youth has been rebellious and defiant since the time of Plato, but they may not ignore the currently growing. power of young voices in American society, a power which may well mold the shape of social institu­ tions in a manner never before noted in h istory.. 1 The author asks: "What is a hippie?", and finds definition impossible, as there are many different kinds of hippies on the American scene. The "Hippie Culture" would consist of a conglomeration of Christian mysticism~ Vedic teachings, revolutionary tracts, Madison Avenue pop­ psychology, pseudo American Indian religions, hedonism, and some traditional American values, such as individualism, independence, and frontier courage. Each different group seizes upon certain elements of this set of choices to devote its energies to and to elaborate on. 2 Dress styles, art, music, sexual mores, and the use of drugs have all been influenced in various degrees and ways by phenomena that can be broadly sub­ sumed under the category "Hippy Culture. 113 Popular costumes in the ghetto included bell-bottom trousers for both sexes, mili­ tary uniforms and insignia, ruffled shirt­ fronts and balloon sleeves, beads of various designs, shoulder-length hair often held in place by a headband, wide belts with heavy brass buckles, felt hats, cowboy boots, motorcycle boots, sandals, both pubic-level and ankle-length hem­ lines on females, and various forms of costume Jewe. l ry. 4 So the kids started dropping out. And they wore long hair and beads and all so as to be different from the world they left behind, yeah, but they did it even more so they'd know they weren't alone. Every long haired kid was another friend to support you when you felt like a that in a world of this. In 1969 the revolution broke out in the south and in March there were 10,000 freaks on the steps of Nashville, Tennessee, Capital Building chanting FUCK YOU GEORGE WALLACE with a sourthern twang.

    Prison Visit FAQs What should I do when I arrive? When you arrive at the prison, park anywhere in the parking lot except in the reserved spaces. Please lock your car with the windows rolled up – unlocked vehicles on TDCJ property will be towed. Vehicles are also not allowed to have the windows rolled down. Come in the front door and tell the receptionist that you are here for PEP. What should I bring with me inside the prison? Bring Car keys (and please roll up your windows all the way; this is required to park in the lot.) Driver’s license, state ID or passport. (Please bring the same ID you used to RSVP.) Do NOT Bring Cell phone, PDA or pagers (This is a felony in Texas!) Firearms or weapons – not even in the parking lot Wallet, purse or briefcase – just bring your driver’s license. No cash, coins, stamps, business cards, tobacco products, or camera Medication – if you need to take medication during your visit, please notify us so we can make appropriate arrangements Anything else not pre-approved by PEP staff NOTE: PEP will provide you with pens and notepads inside the unit, if needed. No.: KVOP-17063/2020/S Report on cases in which remedy was not achieved even using the procedure under Section 20 of the Public Defender of Rights Act In accordance with Section 24 (1)(b) of Act No. 349/1999 Coll., on the Public Defender of Rights, as amended, I provide information to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic on cases where adequate remedial measures were not achieved even by means of notifying the superior authority or the Government, or by informing the public of the findings obtained in inquiries under Section 20 of the Public Defender of Rights Act. A. The option for inmates to use various things when serving a custodial sentence (File No. 4003/2019/VOP)1 The former Public Defender of Rights suggested to the Director of the Rapotice Prison that, as a remedial measure, the prison should enable the complainant to use a CD player with headphones for learning a foreign language. Furthermore, she suggested that convicts should be allowed to wear T-shirts of any colour in the prison, including printed T-shirts unless the motive seemed generally inappropriate (only black and white t-shirts without print are currently permitted), and that they also be permitted to combine the institutional clothing with their own accessories (e.g. own caps and hats, scarfs and gloves). The Director of the Rapotice Prison did not adopt the suggested remedial measures and the Public Defender of Rights therefore used the option of informing the General Directorate of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic about the above.

Trial of a defendant in prison garb has been recognized as an affront to the dignity of the proceedings and as jeopardizing a defendant’s due process right to a fair trial; thus, the State may not compel a defendant to appear for trial before a jury in identifiable prison or jail clothing. The constant reminder of a defendant’s condition implicit in prison attire may affect a juror’s judgment and thereby endanger the presumption of innocence by creating an unacceptable risk that the jury will impermissibly consider that circumstance in rendering its verdict. Unlike the need to impose physical restraints on unruly defendants, “compelling an accused to wear jail clothing furthers no essential state policy.” Estelle v. Williams, 425 U.S. 501, 505 (1976). The U.S. Supreme Court in Estelle also recognized that defendants who are compelled to stand trial in prison garb are usually “only those who cannot post bail prior to trial” and to “impose the condition on one category of defendant, over objection, would be repugnant to the concept of equal justice embodied in the Fourteenth Amendment.” Id. at 505–06. Whether a defendant was prejudiced by being compelled to stand trial while wearing prison attire is subject to harmless error analysis on appeal. The State has the burden of showing that the error was harmless beyond a reasonable doubt.

Lieutenant Diaz' disclaimer about beatings was in response to a remark I made at a particularly intense point in the questioning Hunched forward with his elbows on the desk, Diaz had made a fist to enforce his point: "I can assure you that we have a solution to your problem if only you tell the truth Tell the truth and everything will be better for you Lie and it can only get worse." Seeing his clutched fist, I assumed he meant force.

    WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ excerpts from 18 Centropa interviews WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ Excerpts from 18 Centropa Interviews As the most notorious death camp set up by the Nazis, the name Auschwitz is synonymous with fear, horror, and genocide. The camp was established in 1940 in the suburbs of Oswiecim, in German-occupied Poland, and later named Auschwitz by the Germans. Originally intended to be a concentration camp for Poles, by 1942 Auschwitz had a second function as the largest Nazi death camp and the main center for the mass extermination of Europe’s Jews. Auschwitz was made up of over 40 camps and sub-camps, with three main sec- tions. The first main camp, Auschwitz I, was built around pre-war military bar- racks, and held between 15,000 and 20,000 prisoners at any time. Birkenau – also referred to as Auschwitz II – was the largest camp, holding over 90,000 prisoners and containing most of the infrastructure required for the mass murder of the Jewish prisoners. 90 percent of Auschwitz’s victims died at Birkenau, including the majority of the camp’s 75,000 Polish victims. Of those that were killed in Birkenau, nine out of ten of them were Jews. The SS also set up sub-camps designed to exploit the prisoners of Auschwitz for slave labor. The largest of these was Buna-Monowitz, which was established in 1942 on the premises of a synthetic rubber factory. It was later designated the headquarters and administrative center for all of Auschwitz’s sub-camps, and re-named Auschwitz III. All the camps were isolated from the outside world and surrounded by elec- trified barbed wire.
