YARES ART is pleased to present Larry Poons: First Thought, Best Thought —The Particle Paintings (1996–2002) on view in New York, November 9, 2019–February 15, 2020. In addition to his “Particle Paintings,” the exhibition will also feature a selection of Poons’s most recent works (2018–2019). This show highlights the rarely exhibited and spectacular panoramic compositions Larry Poons produced from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s—which echo author Allen Ginsberg’s “First Thought, Best Thought” motto through their apparent spontaneity.This will be the first exhibition in Yares Art’s newly expanded galleries to focus exclusively on this exceptional period of Poons’s oeuvre, offering the public a unique opportunity to discover paintings that count among the artist’s most imaginative, brilliant, yet underrecognized achievements. In the 1960s, Poons reached critical success at an early age for his iconic “Dots” and “Lozenges” paintings—hard-edge, abstract compositions that placed the artist at the forefront of American painting. Ever the restless innovator, Poons subsequently abandoned hard-edge abstraction to refine a technique in the 1970s and ’80s centered on pouring and throwing paint, resulting in his famed “Throw” paintings, where elements of chance and gravity play major roles in the creative process. By the early 1990s, a different aesthetic, exemplified in the “Particle” paintings, had emerged. -

Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian Last May, George Condo had a near-death experience. The American artist was visiting Berlin after finishing a suite of ink drawings. "I guess my immune system was down and I was in a weird state of mind." "Weirder than usual?" I ask, as we look at those drawings at the Skarstedt Gallery, one of two London venues showing his work this month. "Much weirder," he says. He points to the silhouette of a head dominating the foreground of a work called The Prisoner. Behind the silhouette are iron bars, and behind those is a prisoner facing us, whose head seems to have been flayed to reveal the throbbing orange cranium beneath. "That's where my mind was at." The ink drawings were to be the final portraits of a weird menagerie of archetypal figures – among them banker, butler, alcoholic, and an odd French guy called Jean Louis, who cropped up in various improbable guises including that of a French maid – that Condo had culled from his imagination and worked on for a quarter of a century. "It's the last hurrah of the pods," he says. -

Artist George Condo Maps His Return to Health in a New Show Of his new show at Skarstedt Gallery this month: “As an artist you’re able to take negatives and turn them into positives.” By Lane Florsheim | Nov. 26 2019 In late July, the artist George Condo went to the hospital with terrible chest pains. He was told he needed heart surgery immediately. “They said, ‘If you didn’t come in today, you would have been dead tonight,’” he says. After his surgery, Condo’s surgeon showed him black-and-white images of what his artery looked like before and after. “I said, ‘Oh wow, it was really bad,’” he remembers. “He said, ‘Yeah, you would have had a heart attack.’” Condo took the scans home. For his recovery in August, he went to the Hamptons, where he watched TV, played Scrabble with his two daughters and worked on a series of drawings. His larger-scale paintings, which require a ladder, were out of the question. “Then, eventually, I kind of felt perfectly fine,” he says. The drawings he completed during that period of rest are on view in a new exhibit of his work this month in Manhattan. Though the show is titled simply George Condo: Paintings & Works on Paper, it tells the story of a complex year for the artist. Condo, 61, made all of the 25 works in the new show while also working on a 13-foot tall sculpture covered in 24-karat gold leaf, currently on view at Lincoln Center Plaza. When he got back to New York City in September, Condo didn’t have enough new work to fill a show. -

HBO Documentary Films acquired U.S. TV rights to the film and will also open it in theaters in a minimum of 12 U.S. markets prior to its HBO premiere. Directed by Nathaniel Kahn (2003’s Oscar®-nominated “My Architect”), THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING will receive its world premiere as part of the Sundance U.S. Documentary Competition this Friday, Jan. 19. Exploring the labyrinth of the contemporary art world, THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING examines the role of art and artistic passion in today’s money-driven, consumer-based society. Featuring collectors, dealers, auctioneers and a rich range of artists, from current market darlings Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter and Njideka Akunyili Crosby to one-time art star Larry Poons, the film exposes deep contradictions as it holds a mirror up to contemporary values and times, coaxing out the dynamics at play in pricing the priceless. Director Nathaniel Kahn states, “I couldn’t think of a better home for the film than HBO. I had a great experience with them on both ‘My Architect’ and my short, ‘Two Hands,’ and am particularly happy they will be taking on the theatrical as well as the TV release for THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING.” Josh Braun of Submarine and Lisa Callif of Donaldson + Callif, LLP negotiated the deal with HBO Documentary Films. -

'The Price of Everything': Film Review | Sundance 2018 2:39 PM PST 1/25/2018 by John DeFore An entertaining if not comprehensive look at the bubble in blue-chip art. Fifteen years after his celebrated 'My Architect,' Nathaniel Kahn delivers a second doc about commerce and contemporary art. A look behind the sensational headlines charting the ever-rising prices for art sold at auction, Nathaniel Kahn's The Price of Everything offers interviews with those who make, sell, buy and study the art in question. More conversational than journalistic in spirit, it avoids hard statistics (and the reasons those stats can be hard to come by) in favor of well-informed impressions and anecdotes. Though not the first doc to note the insanity surrounding this subject, it is easily accessible to non-insiders and holds interest even for those who follow art closely. Structured fairly arbitrarily around a countdown to one of Sotheby's big contemporary art auctions, the film makes clear that this sort of thing is both what enables the absurdly inflated prices and what infuriates many artists. As far back as the 1973 sale in which taxi-cab magnate Robert Scull sold off 50 major paintings, Robert Rauschenberg was on hand to complain that he got no cut of the enormous profit collectors make when they resell what they got at a bargain. In the present tense, Kahn visits with hot painters such as Marilyn Minter and Nigerian-born Njideka Akunyili Crosby, both of whom describe market pressure as a threat to their work, if not their sanity. -

But before he dispersed his works to some of the world’s top museums, in particular the Museum of Modern Art (https://www.artnews.com/t/museum-of-modern-art/) in New York, he kept them in his Central Park West apartment. Thousands of visitors made the pilgrimage each year to his home to see masterpieces by the likes of Pollock, Rothko, Franz Kline, and Barnett Newman, with Rothko even referring to Heller’s apartment as “the Frick of the West Side.” When he began seriously collecting Abstract Expressionism during the ’50s, museums like MoMA largely ignored the movement. Heller rushed in headlong. “He wasn’t someone to say, ‘Let me take a gamble on this small picture so that I don’t really commit myself.’ He committed himself a thousand percent, which is what he believed the artists were doing,” Ann Temkin, chief curator of painting and sculpture at MoMA, said in an interview. Though Heller was never formally a board member at MoMA—“I was neither WASP-y enough nor wealthy enough,” he once recalled—he transformed the museum, all the while maintaining close relationships with artists and curators in its circle. -

With that in mind, in 2017 TIME History will revisit the entire year of 1967, week by week, as it was reported in the pages of TIME. Catch up on last week’s installment here. Week 41: Oct. 13, 1967 Tony Smith was the "most dynamic, versatile and talented new sculptor in the U.S. art world" proclaimed this week's cover story — but that wasn't the only reason why his work was so newsworthy. The other factor worth considering was what his work at the time looked like. Smoke, the work discussed at the top of the article, was metal, crafted in a fabrication shop from his designs, and it was huge. Smith was TIME's way of looking at a major new trend in contemporary art. As American cities grew and modernized, they needed art that could hold its own. Enter the new American artist: In the year 1967, the styles and statements of America's brash, brilliant and often infuriating contemporary artists have not only become available to the man in the street, but are virtually unavoidable. And with proliferation comes confusion.
