Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

  • OBHOF INDUCTEES Why We Honor Them 2104
OBHOF INDUCTEES 2104 Why We HonorThem: Dr. Harold Aldridge March 3, 2014 Aldridge sings the blues Dr. Harold Aldridge is a retired professor of psychology at NSU in Tahlequah. Tahlequah Daily Press By RENEE FITE Special Writer TAHLEQUAH — The gray is beginning to cover his once-black hair, and it shows when the tall, lanky musician adjusts his black felt cowboy hat. He’s admits to being a little nervous. To keep his hands busy and mind occupied before the show begins, he tunes his guitar, glancing around the room, waving or nodding to friends. “An Evening of Blues Music,” presented at Webb Tower by Dr. Harold Aldridge, professor emeritus of psychology at Northeastern State University, was in observance of Black History month. After a brief introduction and enthusiastic applause, Aldridge began with a joke. “As the milk cow said to the dairy man, ‘Thanks for the warm hand,’” he said. For the next hour, the audience was taken on a journey through black history via the blues, from deep in the Mississippi Delta, to Alabama, the East Coast, Kansas City, Oklahoma, Texas and California. “I’m going to tell you the history of blues, and hopefully, it will be entertaining,” Aldridge said. “I stick with the old stuff, from Memphis, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.” According to Aldridge, blues music is evolving. “It’s almost like rock in some places; I guess next we’ll have rap blues,” he said. As his story unfolded, the audience learned the blues has changed with varying locations and situations. “The blues originated in West Africa and came here as a feeling, the soul of it, the spirit of high John the Conqueror,” said the Aldridge.

  • JIMI HENDRIX BLUES, ROCK and SOUL by JACK HADLEY
BIMONTHLY NEWS OF THE COLORADO BLUES SCENE • VOL. 23, NO. 5 • OCT. - NOV. 2017 • [email protected] 2013 KBA WINNER BLUES SOCIETY OF THE YEAR JIMI HENDRIX BLUES, ROCK AND SOUL BY JACK HADLEY Jimi Hendrix created a shim- mering rain- bow of music that hangs over every electric guitarist who followed him. There are traces of Guitar Shorty, Buddy Guy and other great musicians in his play- ing. Some rock fans want to claim him as their own, as if the blues never touched him. They are dead wrong. Hendrix was steeped in the blues, soul and R&B music from the very beginning. A few years ago I interviewed Nick Nixon (of Andy T. & Nick Nixon fame), a Nashville- based bluesman. Hendrix and his Army buddy, Billy Cox, were stationed at nearby Ft. Camp- bell, Kentucky in 1962. Nixon told me they would come to Nashville on the weekends to sit in with Black musicians in town, playing blues and R&B. “Sometimes we didn’t know what to think of Jimi’s playing. We just didn’t know what to do with it!” Nixon stated. • Golden Gate Grooves
THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 4, December 2009 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year, Blues lovers! This year passed incredibly fast (as they all do, it seems to me). The Golden Gate Blues Society (GGBS), which was founded in April 2009, heads into 2010 with some challenges ahead. We're still looking for a new location for our weekly pro blues jam since the closure of The Little Fox, our beloved home base, in early December. Keep the faith; we hope to be up and running again soon, and continuation at the Little Fox is a possibility. We're proud of what we have accomplished, which includes a viable and growing Blues in the Libraries program. And I'm personally proud of the caliber of contributions to this fledgling newsletter. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has invested time and energy into making this publication happen! In this issue of Golden Gate Grooves , Dorothy Hill , to whom I owe a personal debt of gratitude for her contributions (for more than what you see in print), reviews a recent Sista Monica show at Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco. Sista Monica is a local (and national) treasure who has battled back from serious illness to once again energize and amaze her audiences with her voice. Joseph Jordan presents his interview with Cathy Lemons and Johnny Ace --a musical and life partnership that keeps growing in interesting directions. You may recall the article Johnny contributed to the last edition of the newsletter on bluesman Stu Blank.
